4 Claims.
This invention relates to fasteners and more particularly to means for attaching an instrument case to a post.
An object of this invention is to provide a fastener which is particularly adapted forv fastening the case of a parking meter to the top of a post. A further object is to provide such a fastener which is economical to construct, easy to use and by means of which, cases containing parking meters may be interchangeably and firmly mounted upon the top of a post by a single and quick operation.
A still further object is to provide a fastener which is durable, tamper-proof and inaccessible except to authorized persons.
Further objects as well as advantages of my invention will be clearly understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a side View, partly in section, showing a parking meter case attached to a post by means of my improved fastener.
Figure 2 is a front View of the same also partly in section.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the post with my improved fastener attached thereto and showing a portion of the case in section.
As illustrated in the drawing, the numeral 5 denotes a case of a particular construction used for parking meters. Said case comprises a main compartment 6, in which the meter mechanism is housed, and a lower compartment 1 in which is contained a coin receptacle 8 adapted to receive coins delivered thereto through a coin chute 9.
Said case 5 is provided at its lower portion with a 7 depending wall I 0 forming a socket II which is adapted to receive the end of a post, or standard, l2 upon which the casing 5 is mounted.
My improved fastener comprises a bar l3 which extends through oppositely disposed apertures I4--l4 near the top of said post. The ends of said bar project beyond the outer surface of the said post and fit into recesses l5-l5 which are located in the side walls of the socket I! and are open at the bottom edge of said wall l0.
Said bar l3 also extends through apertures in the opposite sides of a U-shaped connecting member l6 which is invertedly mounted on said shaft and which has a square opening I! in the top thereof through which a carriage bolt ill, of common form, extends. The head of said bolt is positioned between a portion of said U-shaped member and said bar l3, which is parallel therewith, and is retained in vertical position by means of the ueshaped member l6 and the bar l3 substantially on the axis of the post l2 by means of the depending portions of the member l6 whichjfit Within the post H with their edges close to the wall thereof, as may be clearly seen from Figure 3 of the drawing.
When said bolt I8 is in said position, the threaded portion thereof extends above thetop of the post l2, through an aperture l 9 in the bottom wall 2!} of the case 5, and into the compartment 1.
From the above description it will be clearly understood, that the casing 5 may be readily 'attached to the post l2 by simply placing the same over the top of said post and fastening it thereon by means of a nut 2! which is threaded to the bolt I 8 over a washer 22. The engagement of the ends of the bar I3 with the recesses |5l5 will prevent. turning of the case 5 on the post if an attempt is made to loosen the nut 2|. when, the case is thus attached to the post it is practically impossible for an unauthorized person to remove the same therefrom without having access to thecompartment 1 by means of a key fitting the lock 23 in the door 24 of said compartment. An authorized person, who is provided with such a key, may easily detach the case from the post by simply opening the door 24 and unscrewing the nut 2 l It will be noted that the coin box 8 is mounted upon ledges 25-25 in the side walls of a compartment l and held thereby above and spaced from the top of the bolt l8. Thus said bolt will not interfere with the proper positioning of the coin box in the compartment 1 and the coin box may be easily removed from said compartment when it is desired to unscrew the nut 2| from the bolt for the purpose of unfastening the case to remove it from the post.
It will be clearly understood from the above description and from the accompanying drawing that, I have provided a new fastening device which is especially adapted for and offers novel advantages in fastening a casing to the endof a supporting post.
Furthermore, it will be clearly seen that, by the novel construction of my invention, all of the parts comprising the fastener are concealed from the weather, and the depending wall In retains thebar IS in position so that it cannot be removed from the post until the case 5 has first been dismounted therefrom. Iclaim:
1. In combination with a casing and a support ing member therefor, fastening means for securing said casing to said supporting member comprising a socket in said casing adapted to receive the end of said supporting member, a connector, an anchoring bar extending through said support and connector and having the ends thereof extending beyond the outer surface of said support and adapted to be received in said socket in a manner whereby rotation between said casing and support is prevented and means upon said connector for securing the same to said casing.
2. In means for attaching a member to a support, a socket in said member adapted to receive the end of said support, a recess in the wall of said socket, a connector, a bar for securing said connector to said support and adapted to cooperate with said recess to prevent rotational movement between the said member and support, and means extending between said connector and member for fastening said member to said support.
3. Fastening means for fastening a member upon a support; said means comprising a connector adjacent the top of said support, an anchoring bar extending through said support and connector with its ends projecting beyond the said support; the said member having a socket adapted to receive the end portion of said support and said anchoring bar and including recesses in the walls of said socket adapted to receive the projecting ends of said anchoring bar and thereby prevent rotational movement between said support and member, and threaded means extending between said connector and member for fastening said member to said support.
4. In means for fastening a member to a tubular support, an inverted U-shaped connecting member fitting within said support adjacent the top end thereof, an anchoring bar extending through said support, a U-shaped member with its ends projecting beyond the outside of said support, a wall depending from said member and forming a socket therein adapted to receive the said end portion of the support and having recesses to receive the projecting ends of said anchoring bar for preventing rotational movement between said member and support, a bolt secured to said U-shaped member and retained thereon by said anchoring bar; the said bolt extending through an opening in said member and having means connectable thereto for fastening said member to said support.
