I 'lhis invention relates to-fastening inserting machines and is illustrated herein by way of 1 example as "embodied in a machine arranged to insert fiber fastenings in shoes.
' An object of the invention is to provide in a machine of the type referred to improved means for adapting the. machine for 'use in inserting fastenings across the forward portion of a heel on a shoe adjacent to the breast of the heel.
To the attainment of this object the invention provides, in accordance with one feature, improved means forsupporting ,a .shoe while it is moved transversely of theffastening inserting instrumentalities of the machine to permit said instrumentalities to insert fastenings' across the forward portion of a heel on-the shoe adjacent to the breast of the heel, said means, as herein illustrated, comprising a plate "of" substantial width mounted 'onawork support 'or spindle which is normally'arranged to swing relatively to the fastening inserting instrumentalities'about axes located forwardly of said instrumentalities to permit the'shoe to be turned whilefastenin'gs are inserted around the sides and back of the heel. The work support or jack, including the spindle 36, is arranged to be moved'upwardly by a treadle 38 to bring the work, such as a shoe A. into engagement with the abutment 26 to measure the thickness of the work, the work support being then locked in this upper position by mechanism contained in the casing 28 and fully disclosed in the MacKenzie Patent No. 1,587,848. Continued depression of the treadle38 causes it to become disconnected from the measuring and locking mechanism and to operate further'mechanism, contained within the column If! and indicated generally in Fig. 1 by the reference numeral 46, to raise the post 22 and press the shoe against the abutment 20 under the force of a spring 42, thereby clamping'the work during the operation of. the fastening inserting instrumentalities. The mechanism 46 then operates automatically to release the shoe from the abutment 20 to permit the awl to feed the same after which the -mechanism clamps the work again before another fastening is driven. The present machine is adapted to insert fase tenings formed from fibrous material around the sides and back of a heel on a shoe and alsoto insert fastenings across the forward portion of the heel adjacent to its breast to complete the attachrnent of the heel to the shoe, this i'operation being sometimes referred to as slugging the heel on the shoe. It will be obvious that when the machine is inserting fa'stenlngs around the sides and back of a heel B, which may be composed of either leather or rubber, the work support 36 must be freeto' swing relatively to the fastening insertinginstrumentalities to permit the shoe to be turned into positions in which the 'fastenings can be inserted around the periphery of the heel, as shown in Fig. 4. Free swinging movement of the work-support 36 transversely of the machine is permitted by the member 32 and swinging movement inwardly and outwardly of the machineis permitted by the pivot 34. Accordingly, when slugging around the sides and back of the heel, theoperator is able to swing the work support both lengthwise and transversely of the fastening inserting instrumentalities and thus control the positions of the fastenings inserted around'such portions.

The means proper position relatively to the fastening insertfor supporting the shoe and permitting movement thereof; transversely of the fastening inserting instrumentalities comprises a relatively wide plate 8.6 (Figs. l-to 3, inclusive) [which may be removably secured to the holding member 52 of the work support 36. in the same manner as the last pin 44 was secured thereto by a pin 88'entering a hole in the'member 52 and being retained in the hole by the spring as engaging a projection 90 extending laterally from the pin 88. .It. will be seen from Figs. 2 and 3 that the gage 92 projeotsforwardly of the fastening inserting instrumentalities in order to engage the breast of the heel. Accordingly, the pressure of the fasteninginserting operation. against the plate 36 and work support 36 will tend to swing the work support inwardly about the pivot 34 and thus move the heel away from the breast gage 92' if the work supp'ortwere free to swing about that pivot during the fastening inserting operation. In order to prevent swinging movement of the work support and to insure that the shoe can always be held firmly by the operator against the gage 92 when slugging across the breast of the heel, the machine is provided with means for locking the work support against swinging movement during the insertion of fastenings across the heel breast. At its lower portion thework support is provided with a projection I08 through which is bored a relatively largehole IIO which is substantially parallel to the adjacent upstanding portion of the work support; Bolted to the slide 30 by a pair-of bolts H2 is a bracket II4 having a hole II6 formed therein the same size as thehole H0" in the work support and located at such an angle that the hole III] will be'in alinement with the hole H6 when the work'support is in a pro-per angular position for supporting the shoe while slugging across the breast of the heel. In other words, when the plate 86 is -in'a position to support the last C directly under the fastening inserting instrumentalities so thatthe shoe may be supported under the line of drive,- the holes Ilii and IE6 are in alinement with each other. The casting H4 is further secured to the slide 60b}! 'a clampin p te 8 arranged to engage the inner-side of the slide and provided with forwardly extendingbolts I20, I22 which pass through the hole II6 andhave nuts I24, I26 threaded on' their outerends.
Securedby a chain I28 or other suitable means to a lower portion. of the machine frameis a locking pin-l30 which is arranged tofit slidingly into the holes I I0 and I I6 when they are in aline- .ment and thereby lock the work support 36 rigidly against swinging movement'while fasteningsare being inserted across the breast of the heel. In operating the machine it is preferable toinsert the fastenings 58 around the'sides and back of the heel with the shoeheld on the support by the last pin 44 and with the work support free to swing in two directions to permit the heel to be maintained against :the'. edge gage 60 to locate the fastenings properly with respect to the edge face of the heel. After this operation'has been performed on one shoe or, if desired, on a number of shoes, the edge gage '60 may be moved from its operative position into the idle position 6 the machine while the fastening'in'serting instrumentalities insert as many'fastenings I34 as are desired across the, forward portion of the heel adjacent to its breast. The rigid condition of. the work. support 36 enables'the operator to maintain the breast of the heel against the gage 92- without difficulty while inserting the fastenings I34, the last and shoe being moved across the plate 86 by the feeding movement of the aw]. I 6.
Having thus described my invention, what'I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a fastening inserting machine, the combination with fastening inserting instrumentalities and means for operating the same, of a work support arranged normally to swing relatively to said instrumentalities, means removably secured to the upper end of said work support for supporting a shoe while axpluralityof fastenings are inserted successively across a heel on the shoe adjacent to the breast of the heel, and means for preventing swinging movement of the work support throughoutthe period during which said fastenings arebeing inserted.
2. In a fastening inserting machine, the combination with fastening inserting instrumentali support normally arranged to swing lengthwise and transversely of the machine relatively to said instrumentalities, means mounted on said work.

In a fastening inserting machine, the come bination with .fastening inserting instrumentalities and means'fonoperating the same, of a work support arranged to swing. relatively to said instrumentalities, a gage arranged to engage the edge face of a'heel on a shoe and guide the shoe while fastenings are inserted around the sides and back of the heel, means carried by said work support for supporting the shoe while fastenings are inserted across the heel adjacent to its breast, and means for preventing swinging movement of the work support while said last-named fastenings are being inserted.
