In this way one weldf ber 'l and unites the head 4 thereto with a seam extending circumferentially of the several parts.
It has been noted that the central opening in the head 4 is formed with a beveled edge and the beveled edge disk 20 of metal removed from this opening, in the manner indicated in Fig. 4, is utilizedfor closing the opposite end of the barrel 2 ofthe spool to conservethe cost of the metal. The edge or rim of the disk 2U being beveled similarh1 to the edge of the opening in the head 4 adapts its rim to be welded to the'V interior of the barrel 2 as shown in FigZJ.' Tlledisk 2i! is inserted into the barrel 2 and a weld made as indicated at 2l with the metal fused to flow into the groove between the beveled rim lof the disk and the inner periphery of the barrel 2.
The disk or closure 2D serves as an internal support for the end of the barrel 2 and also pro'- vides means formounting a threaded tubular member or neck 25 'on which the removable head 5 may be supported. OneV end of the tubular neck 25 is inserted through a central opening '26 in the disk 20,"this opening being preferably beveled at one end and the rim of the neck also being beveled to provide a groove or channel for the flux of the weld indicated at 2l. The outer portion cf the neck 25 is screw-threaded on its exterior to receive a hand-nut 28. As herein il lustrated the hand-nut 28 is formed with an interiorly threaded'hub 29 with handles 30 projecting radially therefrom.
The several parts of the improved spool or beam y`are assembled in the manner as next explained.
The barrel 2 is first constructed from a flat sheet,
punched to form the perforations or openings 6, and rolled into cylindrical form with its edges Ajoined 'by butt-welding, preferably electrically. The xed flange or head 4 is next mounted on the end-closure l and the latter placed against the end ofthe barrel 2 with its annular flange 8 underlying the rim of the barrel. An electrical Aweld isthen made by causing the metal to flow into the V-shaped opening IE between the inner beveled rim I5 of the head 4 and the beveled seat I4 on the member 1. The metal flowing onto the barrel 2 also bonds the 4latter to its seat on the shouldered flange 8.
The threaded neck 25 is inserted through the axial opening Zin'the disk 20 and welded in place in the manner as previously explained. The disk 20 is then inserted into the end of the barrel 2 and welded into place by owing the metal intothe. channel formed between the beveled rim of the disk and the innerperiphery of the` barrel. With the parts assembled in this manner the head 5. which has a central opening corresponding in diameter` to the `outer periphery of theneck 25, may be placed on the neck and clamped against the end of the barrel 2 by means oftthe hand-nut 28. f
In practice, the method of utilizing the present improved spool or beam for dyeing' and other fluid processing of textile materials and the like is as next explained. For example, in wool top dyeing the head 5 is removed from the end of the spool and the material placed around its barrel in the form of a cylindrical mass. Usually, the spool is stood upright while the mass is placed thereon and pressed down against the fixed head 4, and thereafter the removable head 5 is slid onto the neck 25 and the hand-nut 28 applied in place. By screwing the hand-nut 28.0nto the neck 25,
the material may be compressed between the end heads 4 and 5 to bring it into a mass of substantially uniform density.
The spool with its surrounding mass of material may then be placed in a dyeing chamber or kier with the end-closure 'l' attached to a suitable supply orifice through which the dye liquor is forced. Usually, the opening in the neck 25 is closed byl means on the cover of the .,kier, or otherwise, which also serves to holdV the hub SiV of the end-member 'l seated around the supply orifice. The duid issuing through the opening in they end-member 'l under pressure is caused to flow through the perforations 8 to penetrate the mass of material surrounding the barrel 2. In other cases the direction of flow of the fduid may be reversed toy cause it to penetrate the mass from the outside and'exhaust through the perfor-ations 6 to be discharged down through the opening lll in the member 1 at the end of the barrel.
It will be observed from the foregoing that the present invention provides an extremely stanch parts and their cooperative relationship provide for welding the joints with a minimum of operations, and the ingenious method of forming the several elements of the spool from sheet-metal conserves the material to further reduce the cost.
While the invention is herein shown and described as embodied'in a preferred. form of construction it is to be understood that various modicat-ions may be made in the structure and arrangement of the parts of the spool without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Therefore, without limiting myself in this respect. I claim:
l. A metal spool, beam or the like comprising a tubular barrel, a closure-member having an annular flange projecting within the rim of the barrel at the end thereof, said flange formed with a shoulder abutting the edge of the barrel and single weld with the metal flowed around the' joint between the head and the annular seat of.: the closure-'member and overlying the rim of the barrel to secure the latter to its shouldered seat.
2. A metal spool, beam or the like comprising a tubular barrel, a closure-member having an annular flange projecting within the rim of the barrel at the end thereof, said flange formed with a shoulder abutting the edge of the barrel and having a radial dimension substantially equal to the thickness of the latter, said flange lhaving an annular seat adjacent said shoulder with a second shoulder extending radially1 therefrom. and a head comprising a metal disk having an opening with its rim enclosing the annular seat on the closure-member and forming a lf-shaped channel between therim and seat, said head, closure and barrel secured together in an integral structure byA a single weld with the metal flowed into the channel between the rim of the head and the seat on the closure-member and overlying the rim of the barrel.

head comprising a metal disk with an opening at its center fitted to the annular seat on the closuremember in abutting relation to the radial shoulder thereof, said head, closure-member and barrel being'secured in an integral structure by a single Weld with the metal flowed around the joints of tubular barrel, a closure-member having an annular ange li'ltted yto the inner periphery of the barrel aty the end thereof, 'said iiange formed with a shoulder abutting the edge of the barrel and having a radial dimension substantially equal vto ythe thickness of the latter, said flange having an annularv beveled seat vadjacent said shoulder with a second shoulder extending radially there-l from, and a head comprising a metal disk having an opening With a beveled rim fitted to the beveled seat on the closure-member to form a V-shaped v channel therebetween, said head, closure and barrel secured together inan integral structure by a single Weld with the metal owed into the channel between the beveled rim of the head and the `beveled seat on the closure-member and overlying the rim of the barrel. i v
