UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. EMERY, OF OWEGO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING ROAD-WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,372, dated August 12, 1879; application filed January 30, 1879.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. EMERY, of Owego, county of Tioga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Road-Wagons, which improvement consists of a new device for placing the springs of wagons, which is fully set forth in the following specification and the accompanying drawing.
The figure of said drawing is a perspective view of a portion of the running-gear of a wagon, showing my improvement in the running-gear of spring road-wagons.
My invention relates to improvements in the running-gear of spring-vehicles, in which the springs supporting the body of the vehicle are usually attached directly to the axles; and it consists in attaching the springs which support the body of the vehicle directly to the reach, bent at its ends, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, 0 G are the axles of the running-gear, connected together by the reach B, bent at its ends, as shown at AA, so that the bodyof the vehicle may be hung low. S S are the springs, attached directly to the reach B, and supporting the body of the vehicle. (Not shown in the drawing.)
By this construction, the body of the vehicle being hung much lower than in the ordinary method of hanging the body on springs attached to the axles, the vehicle is caused to run easier and rendered less liable to upset.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the axles G C and reach B, attached thereto, and bent downward at its ends at A A, of the springs S S, attached directly to the reach, and supporting the body of the vehicle, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID H. EMERY.
