WRIST WATCH PROTECTOR Filed Sept. 14, 1938 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Fdrier By W! W fi Aitorneys Patented Dec. 12, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WRIST WATCH PROTECTOR Robert Vernon Vedder, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Application September 14, 1938, Serial No. 229,971
'3 Claim.
This invention relates to wrist watch protectors and an object of the invention is to provide a protector of this character which will embody material improvements over protectors heretofore known and used for this purpose.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating the application of one form of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the protector applied to a wrist watch, the wrist watch and strap therefor being shown in elevation.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional viewthrough the protector.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing the manner in which the transparent member of the sight window is efiiciently secured in position.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 and illustrating a second form of the invention.
Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the invention as shown in Figure 5, and
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view through the second form of the invention.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that in each form of the invention the wrist watch protector comprises a body portion 9 that is preferably formed of rubber of suitable flexibility, adapted to withstand the effects of moisture and to readily expand and contract.
The body portion 9 is suitably hollowed out to accommodate the wrist watch Ill and is provided at opposite ends thereof with integral tubular extensions II adapted to accommodate those ends of the strap sections l2 and I3 which are connected with the watch It as shown in Figure 2.
In order that the face of the watch may be readily viewed, the body portion l of the protector is provided at the top side thereof with a sight window that embodies a suitable trans parent member ll mounted within a frame I! of rubber and united with the body 9 in any suitable manner, preferably by being integral therewith.
In connection with the above it will be noted that at the top thereof, and at opposite ends of the frame ii, the body 9 is reinforced with tapered rubber plies ii that are relatively stiff and serve to reinforce the body at these points.
A salient feature of the present invention is in having the transparent member ll which may be of isinglass or other suitable material provided with a base flange l'l that is received within the groove or channel [8 of the frame l5 and is perforated as at I! so that portions of the rubber above and below the groove It will cooperate with perforations in the manner shown in Figure 4 5 to thereby positively secure the transparent member against displacement.
The structure as described and shown in Fig-- ures 1 to 4 is 'best adapted for use on wrist watches, the wrist band of which is composed of 10 a pair of complemental straps such as straps l2 and I3, it being apparent that, in view of the flexibility of the protector as a whole, the same may he slipped over the strap i3 and over the watch III to the position shown in Figure 2, the 1 inherent flexibility, or elasticity of the protector permitting the same to be so placed in this manner.
The protector shown in Figures 5 and 7 is substantially identical in structure to that form of protection shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive except that in the second form of the invention the protector has the top and bottom portions thereof mutually separable at one longitudinal side of the protector, and said top and bottom portions of the protector, indicated in Figures 5 to '1, inclusive, by the reference numerals 20 and 2| respectively, detachably connected together through the medium of a conventional slide fastener 22 which extends from the extremity of one of the tubular extensions Ila to the extremity of the other of said tubular extensions Ila.
This form of protector will be particularly adaptable for wrist watches of the type having a wrist band, the portions of which are not susceptible of being' completely disengaged, one from the other and which accordingly render it substantially impossible to sleeve a protector thereon and on the watch as such manner of 40 placement is resorted to with reference to the first form of the invention and wherein the wrist band is composed of mutually separable sections such as the strap sections i2 and I3.
Thus it will be seen that the protector, having as shown in Figures 5 to '7, a longitudinal opening at one side thereof, the wrist watch and its hand may be laterally positioned within the protector after which the slide fastener 22 is manipulated for closing said side of the protector.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of a wrist watch protector employing the features of the present invention will be had without a more detailed description thereof.
Having thus described claimed as new is:
1. A wrist watch protector composed of resilient water-proof material and embodying a body portion adapted to envelope the casing of a watch, and flexible tubular extensions at opposite ends oi the body portion and adapted to accommodate the wrist straps at the ends thereof connected with the watch casing, said body portion at one side thereof having a sight opening defined by a resilient frame mounted on the body portion, a transparent member mounted in the frame, said transparent member having a perforated flange and said frame having an internal continuous slit accommodating said flange.
2. A wrist watch protector composed of resilient water-proof material and embodying a body portion adapted to envelope the casing of a watch, and flexible tubular extensions at opposite ends of the body portion and adapted to accommodate the wrist straps at the ends thereof connected with the watch casing, said body portion at one side thereof having a sight opening defined by a resilient frame mounted on the body portion, and a transparent member mounted in the frame, said transparent member having a perforated the invention what is flange and said frame having an internal continuous slit accommodating said flange, said body portion and extensions at one side of the protector being longitudinally separable presenting top and bottom portions for the protector adapted to be spread apart for the insertion of a watch casing into said body portion and the portions of a wrist band at the ends connected with the watch casing into said tubular extensions and a slide fastener associated with the top and body portions of the protector at the mentioned sides for drawing said portions together for closing the body portion and tubular extensions and securing said top and bottom portions closed subsequent to the positioning of the watch and wrist band within the mentioned portions of the protector.
3. In a protector for a wrist watch a body portion adapted to envelope the casing of said watch, said body portion being provided at one side thereof with a sight opening, a frame of resilient material disposed marginally of said opening and provided with an internal slit, and a transparent member closing said opening and having a flat continuous perforated flange fitting within the slit of said frame.
