2 Claims.
This invention relates to corner shelves, and more particularly to a shelf which is adapted to be placed in the corner of the room or in any portion thereof where there is an angular construction.
In the past difficulty has been met in placing shelves in the corners or other angular portions of rooms and it has been necessary to construct individual shelves to meet particular requirements. The uses of such shelves has a tendency to mar plaster and woodwork unduly, and in many instances the screws or nails by which they are held in place have caused the plaster or composition wall to crumble or chip.
An object of this invention is to provide as an article of manufacture a corner shelf which is suitable for use in any corner or angle of the room, which may be easily erected, and which makes provision for the use of any type of molding which may be desired. A further ob ject is to provide a shelf adapted to support ornaments or other articles such as clocks, and which is so constructed that the clocks, vases or other similar articles may be placed on the shelf and detach-ably fastened in place.
A further object of this invention is to provide a shelf of the character described which is economical to manufacture and which may be sold to the ultimate consumer at the lowest cost.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a plan View of our improved shelf in place;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line 22 of Fig. l and showing an object detachably fastened to the shelf;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1 showing the manner in which the molding is held in place;
Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional View showing the manner of constructing fastening means; and
Fig. 5 shows a modified form of fastening means.
We provide a shelf body ll! made out of metal or other suitable material. While the shelf shown in the drawing is right angular and adapted to a right angle corner, it will be appreciated that it could be constructed to fit any corner not right angular. The shelf It is provided on either side with one or more prongs H which are adapted to be driven in and inserted into a wall l2 when the shelf is put in place. The inner part of the shelf is bent downwardly edge of the shelf N). This molding may be of any suitable nature to match the woodwork or walls of the room and is cut with an angular end Hi to fit the wall. Molding I! is provided with a groove I9 adapted to engage the edge of the shelf Ill. The edge 20 of the shelf H1 is provided with obstruct tongues 2i triangular in shape and having their inner point toward the back of the shelf.
The shelf is also provided with a key slot 22 to hold a clock, vase or similar article 23 in 20 place on the shelf. As shown in Fig. 2, the object to be placed on the shelf is provided with a screw or rivet 24 having an extending head 25 which may be inserted through the larger portion 26 of the key slot and then moved forwardly to hold it in place. While this would not be necessary in the normal shelf yet where the shelf is used in boats or similar constructions it is highly desirable.
In constructing the shelf the triangular shelf Hi itself is cut out. A cut 21 is then made on the sides thereof and a wedge driven into this cut to cause the prong H to extend outwardly. In the modified form in Fig. 5, the prong 28 is cut out when the shelf is cut out of the piece and extends outwardly. The prong ll may have a sharpened edge 29 and a point 30 toform a firmer and more easily applied fastening means. The tongues 2| are then struck up along the edge 20, the ear l3 folded downwardly, and the key slot 22 inserted.
It will be appreciated of course that in actual manufacture the entire construction will be performed in one operation with a proper cutting die. The shelf is then ready for insertion into the corner and is inserted merely by placing it in the desired position and tapping the edge 20 of the shelf, driving the prongs ll into the wall. If desired the nail l5 may be. inserted although this is not essential. The molding is then tapped on with the hand to the edge 29. The position of the tongues 2! is such that the molding will be firmly held by them. While we have shown two prongs on either side of the shelf, it will be appreciated that one or more prongs could be used depending upon the size of the shelf and place, said means comprising a key slot, 21. slot molding on the outward edge of said shelf, and means on said shelf to engage the slot in said molding to hold it in place.
2. A corner shelf comp-rising a triangular piece of metal, prongs on two sides of said shelf, said prongs being formed integral with the shelf and extending parallel to the central axis of the shelf whereby said prongs will move into a supporting wall in a direct line with the force necessary to 10 install said shelf.
