. This invention relates generally to containers and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful, improvement incontainers of bag type for thecarrying of merchandise and the like.

Myinvention has'for its primary objects the provision of a container of the type mentioned which is simple in structure, which may be readily and economically. manufactured, which may be conveniently securely closed without the employment of tying strings or other such foreign means, which, when closed, is substantially secure against accidental opening, and which is highly eflicient in the performance of its stated functions. 7

And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described-and pointed out in the claims. v

Referring now in more detail and by reference characters to the drawings, which illustrate practical embodiments of my invention, A designates a container or bag constructed preferably of paper, fabric, orv any other suitable mae. terial in any desired shape and according to any conventional process.

As illustrated, the bag or container A comprises similarly shaped registering front and back walls or panels I, 2, marginally joinedor connected throughout except at their upper transverse margin, where the panels I, .2, are flexibly separate in the provision of a container opening or mouth 3, the walls I, 2, being furtherprovided adjacent the mouth 3 with registering suitably elongated preferably oval apertures 4, all as best seen. in Figures 1, 2, and 3, and for purposes presently more fully appearing.

The back wall or panel 2 is further provided at its upper margin with a preferably integral flap-extension 5 foldable on a hinge or score-line 6 and being cut away centrally of its free margin in the provision ofa recess I complementaryin shape to the apertures 4 in such manner that, when the flap 5 is folded in bag-closing position about the hinge or score-line 6 forwardly and downwardly over the front wall or panel I, the recess I will unobstructively register marginally with the apertures 4, as best seen in Figure 2.

Adhesively or otherwise permanently secured fiatwise to and upon the outer face and suitably adjacent the upper margin of the front wall or panel I, is a preferablyoblong rectangular tabsectlon 8 preferably integrally extended to include abag-closure flap 9 foldable on a score or hinge-line I0 andforr'ned within itsarea with a cut-out or aperture II for registration with the wall-aperture 4 when the flap 9 is in bag-closing position, as best seen in Figures 3 and 4.

The flap 9 is further provided on its inner or under face with a coating I2 of suitable adhesive, such as, for instance, latex. The back-wall flap 5 is also preferably provided co-operably on a portion of its outer face, as shown in Figure 2, with a coating I3 of latex or other adhesive for underlying registration with the flap-coating I2 when the closure-flap 9 is folded upwardly and downwardly into bag-closing position.

Accordingly, in use, on the container or bag A being'suitably filled, the flap 5 is first folded over anddownwardly upon the wall- I into bagclosing position. The closure flap 9 is then folded upwardly and pressed downwardly upon the latex or adhesive coating I3 of the flap 5. The coatings I2 and I3 are then adhesively forced together or merged, thereby separably securing the flaps 5 and 9 in tight closure-forming engagement over the mouth 3 of the bag A, as best seen in Figures 3 and 4. Whenever it is desired to open .the bag A, the flap 9 may be pulled upwardly from adhesive engagement with the underlying fiap'5, the securing latex-adhesive film being readily ruptured or broken, and the flap 5 then reversely folded for completely opening the bag-mouth 3. Such opening operation may thus be very quickly and conveniently accomplished without tearing or damaging the bag A or lessening its useful life, the bag A being subsequently closed and rescaled in substantially the same manner for further repeated'use,'if desired. And it will-be observed that, when the flaps 5 and 9 are co-operably'in bag-closing engagement, as described, the apertures 4 and I I are in full registration and provide a convenient hand-grip for ready portability of the bag A and its contents.

The modified container or bag A of Figures 5 and 6 is similar in all respects to the described container or bag A and hence its parts are similarly designated, except that an adhesive coating is omitted from the flap 5, the closure-flap 9 being adhesively engageable in bag-closing position with the fiap 5 and thebag A being otherwise closed and opened in substantially the same manner as the described container or bag A. The modified container or bag A of Figures '7,

8, and 9 is also similar in all respects to the described bags A and A, except that the back panel or wall 2 is provided fiatwise with a reinforcing-strip I4 of substantially the same width as the closure-forming tab 8 and flap 9. Such reinforcing-strip I4 is provided within its area with an aperture I 5 of the same registering shape and contour as the handle-forming apertures 4, I I, and has a length to extend over the outer face of the closure flap 5 for foldable bag-closing movement therewith, the strip It being provided on its outer face with a latex or other adhesive coating I3 for adhesive securing engagement, when the. flap 5 is in bag-closing position, as best seen in Figure, 8, with the coating I2 of the front fiap 9.

A designates another modified form of bag embodying my present invention, which is substantially identical with the bag A, except that the latex coated closure fiap 5 is initially folded backwardly upon itself, as shown in Figure 12, for the greater protection of the latex coating I3 When the bag A is filled and ready for closure, the flap 5 is first folded outwardly away from the outer face of the back wall 2 and then folded downwardly in closure formation across the upper margin of the front wall I and adhesively secured in full bag-closure position with the adhesive coating I2 of the locking flap 9".

the bag A comprising a rear or back wall 2 provided with a latex-coated closure flap 5 and a front wall I having a closure flap 9, the front and back walls I 2, and the closure flap 9 being similarly provided with registering handle-forming apertures 4, II, respectively. The closure flap 5 is provided at its free margin with a pair of parallel'outwardly' extending tabs I6 each provided on its under face with a latex coating I3 and normally, as when the bag is open, folded backwardly into fiat facewise engagement with the outer face of the flap 5 for the greater protection of their latex coating I3, as .best seen inFigure 13. When the bag A is suitably filled and ready for closing, the tabs I5 are first folded upwardly or backwardly away from the outer face, and to extend in the plane, of the fiap 5. The closure flap 5 and the associated extension tabs I6 are thereupon folded forwardly and downwardly into bag-closure position over the front panel I and the flap 9 then foldedupwardly and pressed, in full bag-closure position, into adhesive engagement therewith, all as best seen in Figures 14 and 16.

A designates a further modified form'of container or bag embodying my present invention, which also is substantially similar to the bags A? and A except that'the reinforcing strip I l has a pair of extension-tabs II shaped for cooperation, and to extend in overlying registration, with the flap-extensions I6. The rearwardly presented face of each of the extension tabs IT is provided with a latex coating I3 and, together with the extension tabs Hi are normally folded backwardly and downwardly over the rearwardly presented face of the closure flap 5 for the greater protection of the latex coating I3. When the container A is suitably filled and ready for closing, the extension tabs I1 and the associated tabs I6 are first folded upwardly to extend in substantially the plane of the closure flap 5 which is then folded downwardly in closure-formation across the mouth 3 and over the outer face of the front panel I The flap 9 is then folded upwardly and downwardly into adhesive bag-closure engagement with the coated reinforced extensions or tabs I1, as indicated in Figure 1'7.

The bag or container in all its several forms may be inexpensively constructed and isexceedingly eflicient and convenient in the performance of its intended functions. e

It should be understood that other changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the bag may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and p'rinciplelof my invention.

2. A bag having connected co-operable mouthproviding front and rear walls, a first closure-flap on the free margin of said rear wall foldable closure-wise over and across said mouth, a reinforcing strip mounted on the outer face of the rear wall adjacent the upper margin thereof and extending integrally across the upper margin thereof and across the first closure flap, and a second closure-flap on, and adjacent the free margin of, said front wall adapted for overlying registration with the outer portion of said reinforcing strip when in bag-closure position, said flaps having co-operably engaging adhesive coatinss.

3. A bag having connected co-operable mouthproviding front and rear walls, a first closurefiap on the free margin of said rear wall foldable closure-wise over and across said mouth, a reinforcing strip mounted on the outer face of the rear wall adjacent the upper margin thereof and extending integrally across the upper margin thereof and across the first closure flap, and a second closure-flap on, and adjacent the free margin of, said front wall adapted for overlying registration, and having an adhesive coating for securing engagement, with the outer portion of said reinforcing strip when in bag-closure position.

4. An envelope including connected co-operable mouth-providing front and rear walls, a first closure-flap on the free margin of said rear wall foldable closure-wise over and across said mouth and the free margin of the front wall into flat abutment along its under face with the outer face of the front wall, said flap having a plurality of outwardly extending tabs, and a second closure-flap hingedly mounted on the outer face of the front wall for bag-closing engagement along its under face with the outer face of the first flap and said tabs.

5. An envelope including connected co-operable mouth-providing front and rear walls, a first closure-flap on the free margin of said rear wall foldable closure-wise over and across said mouth and the free margin of the front wall into fiat abutment along its under face with the outer face of the front wall, said fiap having a plurality of outwardly extending tabs adhesively coated on their outer face, and a second c1osure-flap hingedly mounted on the outer face of the front wall for bag-closing engagement along its under face with the outer face of the first flap and said tabs.

6. An envelope including connected co-operable mouth-providing front and rear walls, a first closure-flap on the free margin of said rear wall foldable closure-wise over and across said mouth and the free margin of the front wall into flat abutment along its under face with the outer face of the front wall, said flap having a plurality of outwardly extending tabs adhesively coated on their outer face, and a second closure-flap hingedly mounted on the outer face of the front wall and provided on its under face with an adhesive coating for bag-closing engagement with the adhesively coated face of said tabs.

7. An envelope including connected co-operable mouth-providing front and rear walls, a first closure-flap on the free margin of said rear wall foldable closure-wise over and across said mouth and the free margin of the front wall into fiat abutment along its under face with the outer face of the front wall, said flap having a plurality of outwardly extending tabs adhesively coated on their outer face and initially folded back upon the first flap for normally protecting said coating, and a second closure-flap hingedly mounted on the outer face of the front wall and provided on its under face with an adhesive coating for bag-closin?s engagement with the adhesive coating of said ta JULIAN MAAS.
