The apparatus by which the instant method of manufacturing ties-is carried out includes atable Ill with which thereis associated a pair of flexible clamping strips l l and I2. These strips are adapted to clamp the lining and the covering material of a necktie. A means is provided which is mounted on the table and is adapted for removably .holding the lower of said clamping strips in a certain position upon the table so that the parts of the necktie may be properly positioned relative to each other as hereinafter'further described. In conjunction with the holding means there is a means for clamping the flexible strips H and I 2 together. ,This means is shown to comprise headed fastening pegs l3 on the lower clamping strip ll adapted to coact with openings ll'andll' in member on the top clamping strip II. The opening it is circularand a tight fit on the central peg l3, while the openings M are elongated 'so that the end pegs l3 may move.

A cable 55 is wound upon the bottom portion of the drum 52' by which the drum may be manualiy turned when desired to move the T-shaped members 16 together.
The racks 5i and 52 are slidably supported on tracks 55 mounted upon the bottom of the table top It. The cable 55 is carried over several pulleys 58 and extends downwards and connects with the front end of a foot pedal 59 which is pivotally mounted by a hinge id at its rear. The means for bending the tie covering material over the lining and over the holding strips 89 and it comprises a plate it which has a pair of parallel strips 33 attached upon the bottom side thereof. These parallel strips 33 engage in a, pair of parallel grooves 3 in the table top. A handle 35 upon the plate 25 is used to manually move the plate. This plate it is held in a raised position from the table top it by a stationary plate 36 which restspuponthe table top. The plate 2% rests upon the plate 3%. The'arrangement is such that the plate 2@ may be moved forwards to bend the tie material as hereinafter more fully explained.
The lining guide gauge is is urged into an operative position of an inoperative position by springs i5. These springs extend through openings I5 in the table top. At the top ends the springs I5 connect slightly above the pivot points of the arms I5. At the bottom ends these springs 55 connect with brackets l5) mounted upon the bottom of the table top id. The-device sofar described may be better understood by considering its operation. Figure 1 shows the parts in operative positions in which a lining of a necktie may be placed upon the bottom clamping strip ii. With the plate 20 in this position so as to hold the bent tie material, the holding strips Iii and l9 are drawn out by releas'ng the pedal 59.
The flexible clamping st p I 2 is then placed in position upon the clamping -strip and secured thereby by the proper inter-engagement of the fastening pegs l3 and the openings l4 and I4.
The connected clamping strips and the tie materials clamped thereby are removed from the arms 2 l and 2 l and the tie is ready to be sewn. Preferably, one operator should produce these holding devices and store them on a suitable rack so that another operator may perform the sewing operation. I

What I claim is:
1. In a device for folding and holding tie material, the combination of a lower clamping strip" of flexible material, an upper clamping strip of flexible material, cooperative fastening means in the region of the end portions of said strips, said fastening means fitting loosely together to permit relative end movement of the clamping strips in a direction longitudinal of the strips, whereby the pair of clamping strips may be flexed to arcuate shape. a

The combination according to claim "1 foruse in a sewing machinehaving a sewing surface and a predetermined direction of material feed, wherein the said sewing machine is provided with a cross bar pivotally mounted to turn' I on an axis located in a plane parallel to the said sewing surface and normal to the said direction of feed and provided at each end with securing (means and whereinone of the said pair of clamping strips is provided with means engageable with the said securing means of the cross bar to mount the said pair of clamping strips in the cross bar and hold them in arcuate shape,'whereby the said pair of clamping strips may be turned to feed the tie material past the said sewing surface.

In 'a device for folding-and holding tie material, the combination of a lower clamping strip provided with fastening means, an upper clamping strip provided with fastening means cooperative with the said fastening'means of the lower clamping strip, thesaid clamping strips being formed of flexible material and the said fastening means comprising a plurality of cooperative fasteners spaced along the length of the respec-' the end fasteners fitting loosely together to permitv relative end movement of the clamping strips, strips may be flexed to arcuate shape. 7

In a device for folding and holding tie material, the combination according to claim 3 where-' in the fastening means on one ,of said clamping strips comprises a plurality of'spaced pegs, and the fastening means on the other clamping strip comprises a correspondingly spaced plurality of apertures adapted to operatively receive said pegs, all the said apertures not in the region of the center of the strip being sufliciently elongated to permit a movement of the pegs therein upon .an operative fiexing of the clamping strips.

In' a device for folding and holding tie material, the combination of a lower clamping strip of flexible material, an upper clampingstrip of 4 flexible material, cooperative-fastening means in the region of the end portions of said strips, said fastening means fitting loosely together to permit relative end movement of the clamping strips in a direction longitudinal of the strips whereby the pair of clamping strips may be flexed to arc'uate shape; the ends .of one of. said clamping strips being provided with. securing means, and supporting means 'forsaid clamping strips engageable with said securing means for holding said strips in flexed and arcuate condition for use in asewingmachine.
