Description

C. N. CROSS PICTURE HOLDER Dec. 5, 1939.
Filed Nov. 18, 1937 Patented Dec. 5, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT orrica 8 Claims.
This invention relates to picture holders and mounts which include a picture receiving and holding body and means in the back thereof to permit the insertion of a picture.
Heretofore such holders have been provide withan open edge through which the picture was customarily inserted, or in the alternative, a flap, hinged about score lines on the back of the holder has been provided for this purpose. Both of these forms of prior construction have been objectionable in actual use. The open edge of a mount permits dirt and dust to reach the enclosure, while the formation of flaps heretofore used involves extra steps in the manufacture, and in use imposes excessive strain on the back of the holder or mount.
It is therefore, an object of this invention to provide a pictureholder or mount which is closed around its marginal edges and into which a picture or the like may be inserted through a passage in the back which is normally closed by a flap adapted to swing freely about its pivot without imposing any strain on the body of the holder.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds in view of the drawing forming a part hereof, in which like reference numerals indicate like parts, and in which;
Fig. 1 is a face view of the picture holder involving the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view taken from the back of the holder to show the means provided for inserting a picture and having a corner broken away show underlying structure;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional fragment corresponding to the lower end of Fig. 4.
The holder, generally indicated at it], comprises a backboard I2, a marginal spacing board it and a face-board It. The outer marginal edges of the backboard, the spacing member and 4 the face-board may be substantially coextensive.
The backboard l2, the marginal spacing member l3 which is out throughout the body thereof for the purpose of providing a picture and glass receiving well, and the face-board ll are superimposed upon each other and are bound together along the entire margin by means of a flexible covering member l5. This flexible covering may extend over the entire back of the holder, around the edges, and over the front of the face-board or, as shown in Fig. 5, it may extend over the face-board I4, around the marginal edges of the holder, and terminate on the backboard where the exposed edges may be neatly concealed by means of a second decorative covering member l6.
It will be notedthat the cut-out in the faceboard ll which constitutes the picture display window is smaller than the cut-out forming the well in the spacing member l3. Thus there is provided means for securely and positively holding a picture or a picture and a covering transparent medium l8 such as glass.
The picture may be inserted between the glass l8 and the backboard [2 but in the preferred practice of the invention the picture is first mounted on a relatively stiff mounting insert 20 which is provided to facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the picture as well as for the purpose of displaying the picture to best advantage.
A picture inserting opening is formed in the backboard I! by providing a flap portion 22 formed by cutting through the backboard on a line parallel to one of the edges as along the line 23 and along the parallel lines 24. The line 23 extends from a point intermediate the width of the spacing member [3 on one side of the holder to a point intermediate the width of the spacing member iii on the other side of the holder. The parallel lines 2i extend from the line 23 through the outer edge of the backboard i2. As a consequence of this construction, the flap 22 may be swung freely around the lower marginal edge of the holder it while using thev flexible binding material it? as a pivot. The inner movement of the flap 22 is limited by its contact with the spacing ember it at each end thereof. Turn buttons 2b which are attached to or extend through the backboard it are provided to hold the flap 22 inits normally closed position.
In this construction is provided a convenient means for inserting a picture into a holder of the class described and one which does'not weaken the relatively thin and inexpensive material from which these holders are usually constructed. At
the same time an opening is provided which gives ture, a picture inserting passage in the back of said holder extending inwardly from one edge thereof, a closure flap for said passage, 2. flexible binding strip constituting the sole means 'for 5 joining said closure'flap to saidholder adjacent the margin thereof to permit angular movement of said flap, and means carried by the back of said holder for maintaining said flap in normally closed position.
2. A picture holder constructed of lightweight flexible stock comprising an enclosure for a picture, a picture inserting passage in the back of said holder extending inwardly from the bottom edge thereof and across substantially its width, a closure flap for said passage, a flexible binding strip constituting the sole means for joining said closure flap to said holder adjacent the margin thereof to permit angular movement of said flap, and means carried by the back of said holder for maintaining said flap in normally closed position.
3. A picture holder constructed of lightweight flexible stock comprising a backboard, a marginal spacing member having a picture receiving well therein, a face-board having a display window, a flexible member extending about the marginal edges of said backboard, spacing member and face-board whereby the same are joined and sealed about their margins, a picture inserting passage in said backboard extending inwardly passage joined to said holder solely by said flexpermit angular movement of said flap, and means flap in normally closed position.
4. A picture holder constructed of lightweight flexible stock comprising a backboard, a mar-. ginal spacing member having a picture receiving well therein, a face-board having a display win:- dow, a flexible member extending about the marginal edges of said backboard, spacing member and face-board whereby the same are joined and sealed about their margins, a picture inserting passage in said backboard extending inwardly from one edge thereof and terminating interto said holder solely by said flexible member along the outer margin thereof to permit angular movement of said flap, and means carried by said backboard for maintaining said flap in normally closed position;
I amen from one edge thereof, a closure flap for said,
ible member along the outer margin thereof to' carried by said backboard for maintaining said mediate the width of said spacing member at each end, a closure flap for said passage joined 5. A picture holder constructed of lightweight flexible stock comprising a backboard, a marginal spacing, member having a picture receiving well therein, a face-board having a display window, a flexible member extending about the marginal edges of said backboard, spacing member and face-board whereby the same are joined and sealed about their margins, a picture inserting passage in said backboard extending inwardly from the bottom edge thereof and terminating intermediate the width of said spacing member at each end, a closure flap for said passage joined to said holder solely by said flexible member along the outer margin thereof to permit angular movement'of said flap, and means carried by said backboard for maintaining said flap in normally closed position.
6. A picture mount constructed of lightweight flexible stock comprising a face-board; and a backboard, a flap member severed from saidbackboard,.a flexible binding member extending over at least a portion of said backboard'and constituting a sole hinge for said flap at one outer edge thereof thereby permitting angular movement of said flap to a'position beyond the margins of saidmount.
'7. A picture mount constructed of lightweight flexible stock comprising a face-board and a backboard, a flap member severed from said backboard, a flexible binding member extending about at least one edgeof said boards and over 'said backboard and constituting a sole hinge for said flap at one outer edge thereof thereby permitting angular movement of said flap about a marginal edge of said'mount to a position therebeyond.
8. A picture mount constructed of lightweight flexible stock comprisinga backboard and a faceboard adapted to position a picture or the like against said backboard, a picture display window in said face-board, a flap member severed from said backboard and having its outer edge coincident with the outer. margins of said boards, a
flexible binding memberextending around the edges of said board at the region of,said flap and constituting a sole hingefor said flap at the outer edge thereof thereby permitting movement of said flap about said edge'to a position beyond the margins of said mount.
