Furthermore, in the .use of-band saws,.espe-' cially of the smaller type, it is not uncommon for the band to break and require repairing by 20 welding or brazing. Usually separate welding machines are required for Joining the ends of" the bands and more often than otherwise the band'must be sent elsewhere, or, at least, carried to another part of the plant'to be welded .25

The apparatus is provided above the pulley IS with a rest or table 26. for supporting the work, while it is being operated upon, and guiding mechanism 30 for the band above the table, as is usual in such constructions.
Since the details of the structure thus far described may be the conventional band saw construction', it is not thought necessary to further illustrate or describe the same.
When the apparatus is to be used as an abrading or honing device, the band'saw 23 is removed and a flexible steel band 25 (see Figs. 7 to 12), having the abrading elements 26 rigidly attached thereto, is substituted therefor.
The abrading elements may be in the form of flles, hones or the like, depending upon the work to be done, and each is rigidly attached to the band 25 at their intermediate portions, as by means of rivets or the like 21. These rivets are arranged in a plane transversely to the band whereby they will not interfere with the bending of the band, as it passes around the pulleys I8 and I9.
Each ofthe abrading elements 28 has a V-shaped recess 28 in one end and 9. corresponding V-shaped projection 29 on the other, as
clearly shown in Figs. 8, 11 and 12. The abrading elements are so arranged on the band. that the V-shaped projection 29 on one end will engage in the V-shaped recess in the adjacent end of an adjacent element during the straight run of the belt, whereby, during the operation of the device, the abrading elements will be held in alignment parallel with the band.
- By dovetailingthe ends of the abrading elements, these elements will not only be held in alignment, but, the meeting lines or'edges of the joints being arranged at an angle to the direction of travel of the belt, there will be a gradual transition from one element to another as they engage the work during the travel of. the belt. This is considered an important feature of the invention because it not only adds to smoothnessof performance, but lends itself 'to accuracy in the operation'of the device.
In order to facilitate the attachment and removal of the band 25 from the pulleys l8 and ill, the band is split and the ends are provided with a pin and slot connection, as shown in Fig. 11. One end of the band is provided with a headed stud 3| which is rigidly connected to theband and the other is provided with a keyhole slot 32 for engaging the stud.
The two abrading elements on the ends of the band may have their abutting ends provided with a recess 30 for receiving the head iii of the unit. In other words, the recesses provide a clearance for the head 3! of the band during the operation of the device.'

The apparatus may be provided with a band saw, a band having filing elements thereon and a band having honing elements thereon whereby all'thre'e operations may be performed successively on the work, if desired, with but little expenditure of time in changing the bands. For instance, the time required for welding and applying the saw band is approximately one to two minutes and the other bands may be changed in about the samtime.
Suitable means are provided for preventing bending of the abrading device while it is passing the restor table 26 when pressure is applied to it during its operation.- In the form of the device selected to illustrate one embodiment of the invention, a backing or guiding device 33 is employed for this purpose.
This device comprises a channel member 34 to which is rigidly connected an upwardly extending arm 35 (see Fig. 7) which is vertically adjustable through a sleeve 35 of the support II. The channel member 34 is arranged inwardly of the band 25 and has its flanges extending outwardly. The flanges are provided with rabbets 38 and 39 which form the ledges 4i and 22 on the inner side of the flanges of the channel, as clearly shown in Figs. 9 and 11 of the drawings.
In order that the abrading elements may engage these ledges without wear on the band, the
band is narrower than the abrading elements.
The band is slightly narrower than the width of the slot at the base of the flanges whereas the abrading elements engage the ledges.
In other words, during the operation of the device, the ledges will constitute backing mem bers for reinforcing the abrading elements 26. The depth of the groove beneath theledges is such as to provide sufficient clearance for the heads of the rivets 21 and for the inner end of the stud 3|.
The channel member 34 extends both above and below the rest or table 24 (see Fig. 8) and the portion of the flanges outwardly of the ledges M and 42 are removed for a short distance above the table or rest'24 to provide access to the abrading elements. The width of the channel member 34 at the point where the outer portions of the flanges are removed is reduced to substantially the width of the abrading members As shown, a U-shaped guide member 46 in is employed for this purpose. The guide member has an extended arm 48 .(see Figs. 9 and 13).

wardly and outwardly to and from the abrading elements 26. The length of the rollers are substantially the same as the width of the channel member ll whereby the abrading elements will be held in the channel at a point justabove where the flanges'are removed, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings.

which is also desirable, but not necessary, in bands used in abrading mechanism-the broken ends of the band are tapered or scarfed so that the ends may be overlapped for brazing the same. Since the bands for the abrading ele-. ments must have constant lengths, due to the vinterfitting or these elements, when one of these bands breaks or is severed, an additional piece or length is necessary. The broken ends are 1 spliced to this additional piece. In tapering the broken end of the hand, one end portion of the band is secured in the band holding device ll. This device comprises a -base or support 54 on the upper portion of which is mounted the iorm member 55 which has the upper surface oi each end beveled or tapered downwardly, as shown at 56 and 51. A clamping member 58' is provided for clamping the end of the band on the form member 55. Then with the aid of a file 59, the upper surface of one end of the bandmay be filed to a proper taper. If the band is a saw the endsare reversed and the opposite endtapered on the opposite side. Aiter' the ends have been tapered, they are brazed in the welding device with brazing material inserted between the overlapping ends.
The brazingor welding apparatus has its two poles GI and 62 extending above the lower plate iii of the base ll 01 the device and is provided with clamping members 63 and 64, respectively, which is adapted toclamp the ends of the band at opposite sides or the lapped portions for holding them in position to be brazed or welded. The
brazing or welding apparatus may be or any suit able construction, that shown comprises the primary winding 65, a laminated core 68 and a U-. shaped conductor 81 which may be considered as constituting the secondary winding. Since the details of the winding and constructionot this portion of the welding device constitutes no part of the invention, further illustration and description are considered; unnecessary.
Suitable means are provided for clampingth overlapped portions of the band during the brazing operation. In the form shown, the clamping member comprises a lever II, pivoted as at 8!, and'provided with a clamping jaw H pivoted to the lever. An adjustable stud I2 is provided for engaging the lower portion of the clamping jaw 1|. It will thus be seen that the apparatus is a self-contained unitcapable of being changed from sawing to filing or to a honing device, as occasion may require. The apparatus may be considered as being a convertible device inasmuch as it may be readily changed from one typeof operating device to another within a. minimum of time and labor. Furthermore, mounting the brazing mechanism on 'a step lower than that on which the band operating mechanism is mounted places the brazing device in a position where it will not interfere with the operation of the sawing or abrading mechanisms or be interi'ered with by them.
While the disclosure is by way of. example only, it--is understood that various changes may be'made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the following claims.
