This invention relates to feeding mechanism for sewing machines and has for an object to provide a sewing machine feeding mechanism which is particularly adapted for use at high operative speeds and which occupies a minimum of space below the sewing machine cloth-plate, so that plenty of space is available below and in rear of the sewing point for other operative mechanisms which it may be desirable to incorporate in the machine.
With the above and other objects in view, as Will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. i
Fig. 1 is a plan View of the present feeding mechanism disposed in the bed of a flat bed sewing machine. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the feeding mechanism. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4, Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the feed-bar and feed-dog of the present feeding mechanism.
The sewing machine has a flat hollow troughlike bed l in which is journaled the rotary shaft 2 carrying the conventional adjustable feed-ad- Vance eccentric 3 and having the feed-lift eccentric extension 4 at its free end.
The feed-bar 5 is preferably of T-shaped cross-section and has fixed to its forward end the fulcrum-pin 6 which is journaled in the spaced arms 1, l of the forked upper end of the feedrocker arm 8 the split hub 9 at the lower end of which is clamped upon one end of the hollow feed rock-shaft lil which is journaled in the bearing bushing ll in the bed-lug l2 projecting forwardly from the front wall i3 of the trough-like bed I.
Clamped to the other end of thel feed rockshaft l is the split hub I4 at the lower end of the crank-arm l having at its forked upper end the spaced arms I6, I6, in which are journaled the pivot-pin I1 which is fixed to the forward end of the pitman I8 embracing the feed-advance eccentric 3. The pitman i8 extends through the clearance hole I9, Fig. 2, in the wall i3 of the machine bed I, While the feed-bar 5 extends through the clearance hole 20.
The feed-bar 5 is formed between its ends with the apertured bearing boss 2| which receives the lateral pin 22 at the upper end of the pitman 23 1938, Serial No. 196,642
which, at its lower end, embraces the feed-lift eccentric 4.
I'he feed-bar 5 has at its overhanging end a grooved seat 24 in which is secured the feeddog 25.
The present machine has a presser mechanism which cooperates with the feed-dog 25 to feed the work. This presser mechanism includes the presser-foot 26 and associated parts constructed substantially in accordance with the disclosure in my co-pending application Serial No. 196,643, filed herewith and entitled Presser mechanism for sewing machines.
The present machine also has looper mechanism including the thread-carrying looper 21 and thread-cutting mechanism including the threadcutting blade 28 and its operating shaft 29 all constructed substantially in accordance with the disclosure in my co-pending application, Serial No. 196,641, filed herewith and entitled Sewing machine.
The machine also has a reciprocatory needle 30 which is constructed and actuated by mechanism substantially in accordance with the disclosure in my co-pending application, Serial No. 196,644, filed herewith and entitled Sewing machine needle-aotuating mechanism.
It will be observed in Figs. 1 and 3, that the thread-cutter blade 28 which is turnable about the pivotal axis 28 extends through an opening 3| in one side-wall 32 of the feed-dog 25 and cooperates with a stationary ledger-blade 33 disposed between the side rows of teeth of the feeddog. It will also be observed in Fig. 1 that all parts of the present feeding mechanism, except the feed-dog, are in advance of the needle 30; the space behind the needle being entirely clear of feed-actuating and feed-adjusting parts so that such space may be fully utilized for the working parts of other operative mechanism, such as automatic thread-cutter mechanism, which it may be desirable to incorporate in the machine. The present feed-actuating and feedadjusting mechanism is disposed entirely in advance of a vertical plane including the needle and normal to the direction of feed.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is:
1. A sewing machine having a reciprocatory needle, a feed-bar which is T-shaped in crosssection and has at oner end thereof in the head of the T a grooved seat, a feed-dog mounted in said seat, said feed-bar being formed between its ends With an apertured bearing boss, a rotary shaft disposed forwardly of the needle and normal to the direction of feed, an adjustable feedadvance eccentric and a feed-lift eccentric on said shaft, a. pitman connection between said feed-lift eccentric and the apertured boss in said feed-bar, a feed-rocker connected to be actuated by said feed-advance eccentric, and a pivotal connection between said feed-bar and feed-rocker. 2. A sewing machine having a frame including a hollow trough-like bed formed with an apertured front wall, a reciprocatory needle, a rotary shaft journaled in said trough-like bed in advance of a plane containing said needle and normal to the direction of feed, a feed rock-shaft journaled externally of the trough in said bed, a feed-lift eccentric and an adjustable feed-advance eccentric on said rotary shaft, rocker-arms iixed to said feed rock-shaft, a pitrnan connection extending through an aperture in said front wall between said feed-advance eccentric and one of said rocker-arms, a feed-bar extending through another aperture in said front Wall and pivotally connected to another of said rocker-arms, and
a link connection between said feed-bar and 10 said feed-lift eccentric.
