UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELECTRIC ATTACHMENT PLUG Max Polis, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Sylvia e. Polis, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application September 24, 1938, Serial No. 231,490
3 Claims. (Cl. 173-330) My invention relates to electric attachment Referring now to the various features of my plugs, which are adapted to engage with the invention, which are most easily seen in Figs. standard types of receptacles on the market and 2-3 6--7 and 8, the base of my plug is similar more particularly to such receptacles when into the well known types consisting usually of a stalled in more or less inaccessible locations, as moulded member 3, having a recess on the under for example, when installed in the lower part of side in which the electric contacts l3 are mountthe room or in the sub-base moulding of the ed. These contacts l3 are supplied with large same, headed screws It, by means of which the electric One object of my invention is to provide an atconductors to be connected to the receptacle are tachment plug which can be easily and cheaply secured to the contacts. Mounted perpendicu- 10 manufactured, so that it will not cost more than larly on each contact I3 is a rectangular contact. the usual well known plugs of its type. member 5 usually bent up from the material of The principal object of my invention is to prowhich the contact i3 is constructed. In the orvide an attachment plug which can be inserted dinary form of plug there are two such contact in the receptacle with the greatest facility and members 5, of rectangular cross section, spaced 15 especially where it may not be possible to see the from each other the same distance as the orifices receptacle while the plug is being inserted. it of the receptacle 2, and with their wide sides Referring to the drawing: parallel with each other. Manifestly however,

The outer end I of the extension 8 may my attachment plug terminal. be flat as in Figs. 3 and 6 or rounded as in Fig. 8.
In Figs. 5, 6, 'l and 8, a sectional view of th In Fig. 7 I show a modified form of my invenreceptacle orifice is shown as in Fig. 2 only ention wherein I make the extension 8 by means larged. of champering the sides thereof as at H, so that 40 Similar numerals refer to similar parts the free end of the contact member 5 is small 40 throughout the several views. enough to partly enter the orifice l6 perpendicu- One form of receptacle, with which my attachlarly to its major dimension. In Fig. 5'is shown ment plug engages, included a casing 2, within the present form of contact member 5 which obwhich the receptacle contacts are mounted in any viously cannot enter the orifice l6 of the recepusual well known manner. Each receptacle is tacle unless it is in its operative position, that is, 45
provided on its outer surface with a depression in parallel juxtaposition therewith. constituted by four-inclined planes 4 and termi- It is seen that the free end 8 in all forms of nating in an orifice l6. These orifices l6 are my invention can enter the orifices l6 no matter rectangular in form, the long side being several in what relation they are brought together; so
so times longer than the width. In the type of that once engaged, it is only necessary to turn receptacle shown a face plate of attractive apthe plug around the engaged contact member 5, pearance is generally used to provide a covering as a fulcrum, as in the case of a plug for the space between the face of the receptacle having two contact members 5, both conand the wall or sub-base upon which it is tact members 5 are in the proper posimounted. tion toenter their respective orifices l6 of the 55 receptacle. This feature is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 wherein one of the extensions 8 of the contact members 5 is engaged with one of the receptacle receptacle with the greatest facility. It should be noted that the plug may be rotated into operative relation with the receptacle in either direction to accomplish th desired result.
It is obvious that many forms of extensions 8 may be devised without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention and having shown and described the same so that anyone, skilled in the art to which it pertains, can make the same, what I claim as my invention and desire to cover by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination, with a receptacle having rectangular orifices of long and short dimensions, of a plug having rectangular electric contacts secured thereto having greater width than thickness, effective, when the width thereof is parallel with the long dimension oi the orifices, to enter the same, and rectangular projections extending from the ends of said contacts of less width than the contact and also the short dimension of said from the ends of the contacts of less width than 10 the contacts and also the short dimension of said orifices and efi'ective when entered therein in inoperative juxtaposition with said receptacle to form a pivotal connection to guide the plug into operative relation with the receptacle.
3. The combination, with a receptacle having rectangular orifices with long and short dimensions of a plug including rectangular electric con tacts, efiective to enter said orifices, when the plug is in operative juxtaposition therewith, projecting members extending from the ends of said contacts, of less width than the short dimension of the orifices, and shoulders formed by the members and said contacts, effective to bear against the face of the receptacle, when a member has entered an orifice and the plug is thereby not in operative position therewith, to form a pivotal connection to guide the plug into said position.
