Broadly speaking, my invention relates to bodies which are used in connection with motor trucks or other vehicles for the purpose of conveying gravel, sand, coal, or other bulk materials, with a means being provided for emptying the contents of the body at either or both sides thereof, and the principle object of the invention is the provision of a body constructed in such a manner that tilting to empty the contents thereof is unnecessary.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a body having a side delivery, and thereby providing the driver of the vehicle on which the body is mounted a more accurate means of ad justing the position of the vehicle with relation to the position where the material is to be deposited or used.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a body having a plurality of independ ently arranged compartments which permits the carrying and unloading of various kinds of materials at the same time without the same becoming mixed with each other.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a. body having discharge apertures located in the sides thereof, with means being provided for adjustably unloading materials therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a body which is sturdy and simple of construction, which is economical to manufacture, and which does not require expensive or complicated mechanical parts for the successful operation thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will suggest themselves in the course of the following description, and that which is new will be pointed out in the appended claims.
The features of the invention will be hereinafter referred to in detail in. the course of the following description, reference thereto being had in the accompanying two sheets of drawings, in which: I
Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of a truck having the body secured thereon, and with the features of the invention incorporated therein.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the body per se, and like Figure 1, showing one of the chutes as being in open or unloading position.
Figure 3 is a detail vertical section through one of the chutes, taken on line 33 of Figure l, and showing the trough member as being in closed position.
Figure 4 is a detail vertical section taken on line 44 of Figure l and showing the trough as being in open or unloading position, and with the vertical sliding closure member being in raised or open position.
Figures 5, 6, and 7 are detail sections taken on lines --5, t-B, and 'll respectively of Figure 2 and showing the arrangements of the dividing panels forming the several compartments within the body.
Figure 8 is a detail section taken on line 8-3 of Figure 4 and showing the manner in which the vertical sliding closure member is positioned in the guide members.

In order that the construction, the operation, and the advantages of the invention may be more fully understood and appreciated, I will now take up a detailed description thereof, in which I will set forth the same as fully and as comprehensively as I may.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 5 designates the cab of a truck, 2 and 3 designate frame members of the truck extending from the forward to the rear ends thereof. 4 designates the rear wheels of the truck, with the tires there-- of being designated by the numeral 5. t designates supporting members which are secured on the upper surfaces of the frame members 2, and are adapted to support the body member '5, all as shown in Figure l.
Compartments are formed within the side members 1 by means of the members 8, 9, and it, as shown in Figure 2. The members 8 form in=- clined surfaces, with the same sloping downwardly from the longitudinal center of the body to the side members i. The members s form a vertex across the body and form sides to the members. 8. The members it slope downwardly from near the upper portions of the front and rear end members I and join, at the lower edges, with the members 8, all as shown in Figures 1 and 2. A downwardly directed chute member I l is secured to the side members I by means of the welds II at each of the apertures I, with the same extending outwardly therefrom. A trough member l2, comprising a bottom portion with side portions turned at right angles thereto, is hingedly secured to the chute member H by means of a hinge rod I3. An extended portion [4 is formed on each of the sides of the trough member with each of the extended portions l4 being con nected together by means of the strap member I5. It will be noted, in Figure 4, that the strap member l5 forms a means limiting the downward swing of the trough member l2 by bearing against the under side of the chute l I.
Vertically positioned guide members I6 are secured to the inner sides of the chute ll near the side members I of the body by means of welds l1 and form a channel M3 for the reception of the vertically sliding closure member l9 which is adapted to close the respective aperture 7. Guide members 20, comprised of fiat straps, together with the respective spacer members 2|, are secured to the outer sides of the side members I above the chute H and form an upward extension of the guide channel l8 above the chute H for the reception of the closure member I9.
Near the top of each of the vertically slidable closure members l9, and centrally located with relation to the vertical edges thereof is the strap member 22 which is rigidly secured to the member i9. A latch strap 23 is hingedly secured to the strap 22 by means of the hinge pin 25. The outer end portion 24 of the latch strap 23 is turned downwardly and forms a hook thereby which is used to secure the trough member in upright or closed position, as shown in Figure 3. The strap member also provides a means for rais ing and lowering the vertically slidable closure member I 9 when it is desired to open or close the apertures I of the respective compartments.
It will be noted that, in the above description, the several members of the device are shown and described as being formed of heavy steel plates, but the same may be made of other suitable materials.
The operation of the device consists chiefly of opening and closing the vertically slidable closure members IS in their respective guides, and raising and lowering the trough members. In hauling materials, the slidable closure members I!) are normally closed, as shown in Figure 3, with the trough members fitting against the outer ends of their respective chutes l l, and with the straps 23 providing means for securely holding the troughs in the upright position, all as shown in Figure 3. When it is desired to unload the material from any one of the compartments, the respective strap member 23 is hinged upwardly and thereby releasing the trough member from the upright or closed position to the normally open position as shown in Figure L, with the strap l5 extending across the under side of the chute II and maintaining the trough member in the position as shown in Figure 4. After the trough member is in unloading position, the vertically sliding closure member I!) is raised to allow the material to pass through the aperture I, through the chute II, and outwardly through the trough member 12.
It will be noted that four compartments have been shown in the drawings, but I desire that it be understood that the number of compartments may vary according to necessity and the size and capacity of the body and the vehicle on which the body is mounted.
I also desire that it be understood that minor changes may be made in the several details and in the arrangement of the parts herein shown and described, insofar as the changes may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In combination with a body of the class described, said body having apertures formed through the side members thereof, a fixed chute member rigidly secured to the body at each of the apertures, a vertical sliding closure member mounted in guides adjacent each of the apertures, a strap hingedly secured to the upper end of the vertical sliding closure member and having a hook formed on the free end thereof, an extension chute member hingedly secured to the fixed chute member and adapted to close the projecting end of the fixed chute, and with the hooked portion of the hinged strap holding the extension chute member in closed position with relation to the projecting end of the fixed chute member.
2. In combination with a body having discharge openings formed through the sides thereof, a fixed chute member, having side members and a bottom member, and being positioned adjacent each of the discharge openings, a vertical sliding closure member covering each of the discharge openings with a strap member being hingedly secured thereto and with a hook being formed by the free end of the strap member, an extension chute member hingedly secured to the outwardly projecting end of the fixed chute with the side members of the extension chute lapping the side members of the fixed chute, a strap member rigidly secured between the sides of the extension chute with the strap member fixing the normally open position of the extension chute by bearing against the bottom surface of the fixed chute member, and with the hooked portion of the hinged strap member forming a latch holding the extension chute in normally closed position with relation to the projecting end of the fixed chute member.
3. In a side discharge body having openings formed through the sides thereof and with a fixed chute member being secured to the body at each of the openings and extending outwardly there-- from, an extension chute hingedly secured to the outer end of the fixed chute with the upward movement of the extension chute closing the outer end of the fixed chute, a strap secured between the sides of the extension chute with the strap bearing against the under side of the fixed chute and limiting the downward movement of the extension chute, a vertical sliding member located at each of the discharge openings and adapted to close the same, with a strap member being hinged to the upper end portion thereof, a hook formed at the free end of the strap member with the hooked portion forming a means normally maintaining the extension chute in a closed position over the outer end of the fixed chute.
