This invention relates to liquid attemperating devices and more particularly to apparatus for attemperating liquid dairy products.
An object of this invention is an apparatus of this type in which very uniform circulation and rapid attemperating of the dairy product is effected. A further object of the invention is an apparatus of this type in which the construction is such as to permit easy and complete access to the interior surface wall of the apparatus for cleaning and in which the top of the apparatus is completely free of driving mechanism.
In one embodiment of the invention, a vat contains a vertical helical coil which is rotatably supported by means extending upwardly from the bottom of the vat and driving mechanism for the coil is located below the bottom of the vat. A vertical baiile plate is supported within the coil. The liquid dairy product to be attemperated is charged into the vat and the coil is rotated while attemperating iiuid is caused to circulate therothrough. rllhe baille plate prevents swirling of the liquid within the coil, thereby preventing the formation of a vortex in the liquid and uniform circulation is produced in the body of the liquid inside the coil with accompanying circulation of the liquid between the turns of the coil. The circulation thus produced causes rapid and quick contact of the liquid product with the attemperating surface, thereby resulting in very rapid attemperating of the product. The attemperating coil may preferably be made of general elliptical formation, thus providing clearance between the coil and the vat wall to give accessl to the wall for cleaning purposes without reducing the total contact surface of the coil. Also, the elliptical configuration of the coil assists in effecting circulation of the product in the vat.
In another embodiment of the invention, the vat is equipped with a jacket through which attemperating medium is circulated and a helical agitator is supported from its upper end by the means' extending upwardly from the bottom of the vat. The agitator is rotated in such direction as to remove air, gases and volatile odors from the dairy product and at the same time prevent air being worked into the product. The agitator effects such circulation of the dairy product as to cause rapid and quick contact thereof with the attemperating surface, thereby resulting in rapid attemperating of the product. The agitator is preferably removable from its supporting means to provide for access to the wall of the vat for cleaning purposes.
Other objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawing, wherein:

A frame or support i contains a vat it hav-- ing its bottom sloping toward a discharge outlet E2 and being provided with a removable cover E3. A hollow post or standpipe lil has its base l5 resting on the'bottom of the frame lll and extends through the bottom of the vat Il above the normal liquid level in the vat. A hollow shaft l'i has an enlarged head ll which is journalled in a stuning box bearing i3 at the top of the standpipe lil. The lower end of the shaft l is likewise provided with a head i9 which is journalled in a stumng box bearing Eil provided in a housing 2i suspended from the bottom of the frame it. Within the shaft i6 is provided a tube 22, the Lipper end of which communicates with a duct 23 provided in the head l? while the lower end communicates with a duct '2liprovided in the housing 2l.
A coil 25 surrounds the post lli and has its' inlet 25 communicating with the duct 23 and its outlet 2l communicating with the annular space between the tube 22 and shaft l5, which space in turn communicates with the duct 28 in the housing 2l. The coil is in effect composed of two lengths of tubing arranged side by side in the form of helices and connected at their bottom. A worm wheel 29 is fixed to the shaft lli below the bottom of the frame lll and meshes with a worm gear 3@ driven by the motor 3l. Baie plates 32 are carried by the post li and terminate above the bottom of the vat and below the top of the coil. Preferably, the coil is of substantially elliptical configuration.
In using this embodiment, the dairy product to be attemperated is' charged into the vat Il and the coil 25 is rotated by the motor 3l. Attemperating iiuid is supplied to the duct Ztl and passes upwardly through the tube 22 by way of the duct 23 into the inlet 26 of the coil 25, downwardly through one section of the coil and upwardly through the other section, out through the duct 2l into the space between the tube 22 and shaft Hi, downwardly through said space to the duct 28 from which it is discharged. The arrangement of the driving mechanism below the bottom of the frame permits easy access to the interior of the vat nand facilitates charging the vat with liquid product as Well as' obviates the inconvenience of having the driving mechanism above the vat. With the arrangement above described, access to the wall of the vat for cleaning purposes is provided by the elliptical contour oi the coil which can be rotated as desired to give access progressively to the entire surface. The same amount oi contact surface may be provided as has been provided in circular coils supported from above the vat inasmuch as less clearance is required at the ends of the ellipse.
It is of course understood that various modifications may be made in the device above described, without in any Way departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
i. An attemperating apparatus oi the character described comprising a vat, rotatable means supported by said vat, a vertical helical coil of elliptical cross-section open at its lower end attached at its upper end. only to said means and being centered on the rotational axis thereof, a stationary baiile plate supported within said coil, and means to circulate luid through said coil.
2. An attemperating apparatus comprising a vat, a stationary vertical post in said vat extending upwardly from the bottom thereof above the normal liquid level therein, a vertical coil of elliptical cross-section open at its bottom rotatably supported at its upper end only by said post and extending downwardly below the normal liquid level, said coil being centered on the rotational axis and consisting of two helices interconnected in series at their lower ends, means communicating through said post with the upper ends of said helices for circulating attemperating 'fluid therethrough, and driving means for said coil extending through said post.

An attemperating apparatus of the character described comprising a vat, a vertical helical coil of elliptical cross-section rotatably supported at its upper end only in said 'vat and'being open at its lower end, a stationary baffle plate supported within said coil, said coil being centered on the rotational axis and consisting of two helices interconnected in series at their lower ends, and means communicating with the upper ends of said helices for circulating attemperating fluid through said coil.

An attemperating apparatus comprising a vat, a stationary vertical post in said vat ex-Y tending upwardly irom the bottom thereof above the normal liquid level therein, a helical coil of elliptical cross-section open at its lower end rotatably supported at its upper end only by said post, driving means for said coil, said coil being centered on the rotational axis and consisting or two helices interconnected in series at their lower ends, and means communicating through said post with the upper ends of said helices for circulating attempcrating fluid through said coil.
5. An attemperating apparatus comprising a vat, a stationary vertical post in said vat extending upwardly irom the bottom thereof above the normal liquid level therein, a helical coil of elliptical cross-section open at its lower end rotatably supported at its upper end only by said post` a stationary baliie supported within said coil, driving means for said coil, said coil being centered on the rotational axis and consisting oi two helices interconnected in series at their lower ends, and means communicating through said post with the upper ends of said helices for circulating attemperating fluid through said coil.
6. An attemperating apparatus comprising a vat, rotatable means supported by said vat, a helical coil oi elliptical cross section carried by said means and centered on the rotational axis thereof, a stationary baie plate supported within said coil and means for circulating attemperating duid through said coil.
7. An attemperating apparatus of the character described comprising a vat, a helical coil or" elliptical cross-section rotatably supported at its upper end only in said vat and being open at its lower end, a stationary barile plate supported within said coil and means for circulating attemperating fluid through said coil.
