Description

Oct. 10, 1939.
W. W. LA BEAUME PIPE CLEANER Filed March 14, 1938 INVENTOR. W W. LA BEAuME Patented Oct. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 5 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe cleaners.
The general object of the invention is to provide a pipe cleaner including novel means for removing ashes and deposits from a pipe bowl.
Another object of my invention is to provide an anvil upon which a pipe may be struck Without damage.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel reamer for cutting the deposit or crust from a pipe bowl.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel combination knock-out, and reamer for pip Other objects and the advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description'taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein: V
Fig. 1 is a central sectional view partly in elevation of a device embodying the features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the pipe cleaner; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section of a pipe in the reaming position.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have indicated my novel pipe cleaner generally at It, Fig. 1. As shown the pipe cleaner includes an ash tray H on which I secure a post l2 as by means of a screw I3.
The post I2 is provided with reamer blades I4 at the upper end thereof, and with a shoulder l5.
Mounted on the post I2 I provide an anvil 16 which preferably includes a metal base I! and a cylindrical tube l8 which are secured together as by welding as at I8 or in some other suitable manner. The anvil l6 which acts as a guard is arranged about the tube l8 and on the metal base I1 and is preferably made of cork.
The metal base I! includes an aperture 20 which receives and slides on the post l2. The cylindrical tube l8 slides freely on the enlarged reamer of the post l2 thereby providing a double guide for the anvil to operate upon.
The tube l8, as can readily be seen in Fig. 1, is slightly larger than the aperture 20 in the metal plate l'l thereby providing a shoulder 2| with contacts the shoulder I5 on the shaft l2 to limit the upward motion of the anvil. A spring 22 surrounds the post to normally urge the anvil upwardly.
If is it desired to empty the ashes from a pipe the user strikes his pipe against the anvil 18 without fear of injuring the pipe. The ashes fall into the tray II. When the user wants to clean the crust from within his pipe be places the bowl of his pipe over the aperture of the tube l8 and presses the anvil down causing the anvil to be forced downwardly against the compression of the spring 22 until the reamer blades contact the pipe bowl. The pipe is'then turned around until all the undesirable particles are removed.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel pipe cleaner which can be economically manufactured and which is highly efiicient for the intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
-1. In a pipe cleaning apparatus, an ash tray, a post secured on said tray, said post having an enlarged upper portion, and said upper portion having reamer blades thereon and an anvil slidable on said post.
2. In a pipe cleaning apparatus, an ash tray, a post secured on said tray, said post having an enlarged upper portion, said upper portion having reamer blades thereon, an anvil slidable on said post, means to urge said anvil upwardly on said post and means to limit the upward movement of the anvil.
3. In a pipe cleaning apparatus, an ash tray,
a post on said tray, said post having an enlarged upper portion, said post having an intermediate shoulder, a tubular member slidable on said post, a base plate secured to the lower end of said tubular member, said base plate having an aperture, said post extending through said base plate aperture, said aperture being smaller than said tubular member and a flexible anvil secured on said tubular member and said base plate.
4. In a pipe cleaning apparatus, an ash tray, a post on said tray, said post having an enlarged upper portion, said post having an intermediate shoulder, a tubular member slidable on said post, a base plate secured to the lower end of said tubular member, said base plate having an aperture, said post extending through said base plate aperture, said aperture being smaller than said tubular member, a flexible anvil secured on said tubular member and said base plate, and a spring on said post having one end engaging said base plate and having the opposite end engaging said ash tray.
5. In a pipe cleaning apparatus, an ash tray, an upwardly standing post on said tray, said post having a reamer member on the upper end thereof, a tubular member slidable on said post, a base portion on said tubular member, said base portion having an aperture, said post extending through said base member aperture, a flexible anvil on said tubular member, means to urge said anvil upwardly on said post and means to limit the upward movement of the anvil.
