This invention relates to draft strips for doors and has for an object to provide a draft strip which can be operated on a door swinging to the right or left, and which may be constructed of 511 any suitable material.
Another object is to provide a draft strip which can be installed by any person other than a skilled mechanic, and also the installation of this device does not mar the door.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of a few strong simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of the other end of the roller without the straps showing the squared end stub shaft with a coil spring sleeved over it, and a crank arm on the outer end of the roller.
Figure '7 is a perspective View of one of the guides showing a rectangular slot open at the top to receive the squared end of the stub shaft. 4 Figure 8 is a perspective view of the other guide with a circular opening in the bearing member to receive the cylindrical gudgeon of the roller.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, the invention comprises guides in which are fixed to a door ll near the vertical edges of the bottom of the door. Each guide is formed of sheet metal shaped to provide an attaching base l2 having a flange I3 provided with spaced guide lips M which overlie the attaching base, the flange having a bearing member l5 between the lips. The bearing member of one guide is provided with a circular opening [6 and the bearing member of the other guide is provided with a rectangular slot 11 open at the tip.
A draft strip I8 is mounted in the guides for vertical movement with relation to the door. The strip is formed of metal and a backing [9 of felt is secured to the rear face of the strip for contact with the door to prevent marring the door.
A roller 20, similar to a shade roller, is provided at one end with a cylindrical gudgeon 2| adapted to fit in the circular opening l6 of one of the guides. At the opposite end the roller is equipped with a stub shaft 22 upon which the roller is rotatably mounted. The end of the shaft is squared to be received in the slot I! of the other guide so that the shaft is held in fixed position. A helical spring 23 is sleeved upon the shaft and is housed in a recess 24 formed in the end of the roller. The spring has one end connected to the shaft 22 and the other end connected to the roller. When the roller is rotated axially in one direction the spring is tensioned to rotate the roller in a retrograde direction.
For moving the draft plate vertically an upper strap 25 and a lower strap 26 have their inner ends stapled as shown at 21 to the roller at one end thereof, and have their outer ends respectively secured to the top and bottom longitudinal edge portions of the draft plate. Likewise an upper strap 28 and lower strap 29 are stapled at the inner ends as shown at 30 to the other end of the roller and have their outer ends respectively secured to the top and bottom longitudinal edge portions of the draft plate.
When the roller is rotated axially in one direction the upper straps 25 and 28 will be wound upon the roller to lower the draft plate l8 to engage the floor. When the roller is rotated axially in the opposite direction the lower straps 26 and 29 will be wound upon the roller to raise the draft plate from engagement with the floor.
By referring to Figures 3 and 4 it will be seen that a cam bracket 3|, formed of sheet metal, is secured to the door frame 32 at the lower end of the frame. The upper edge of the bracket is inclined upwardly toward the frame and forms a cam surface 33. A crank arm 34 is secured to the end of the roller and rides upon the cam surface 33 during the first phase of the opening movement of the door and during the final phase of closing movement of the door.
When the door is being closed the crank arm 34 is moved by the cam surface 33 from the position shown in Figure 4 to the position shown in Figure 3 with resultant rotation of the roller 20 to Wind up the upper straps 25 and 28 thereon, and lower the draft strip l8 to engage the floor 35. At the same time the coil spring 23 is placed under tension. When the door is being opened the spring is released as the crank arm moves down the inclined cam surface 33, and rotates the roller to wind up the lower straps 26 and 29 and raise the draft strip from the floor.
From the above description it is thought that the invention will be fully understood Without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
1. A draft strip for doors comprising, guides adapted to be fixed to one side of a door, a draft plate in the guides, a roller carried by the guides, a stationary cam plate, alcrank arm on the roller adapted to ride on the cam plate in one direction, a spring carried by the roller for rotating the roller in the opposite direction, and straps connected at their inner ends to the roller and at the outer ends to the draft plate and adapted to be wound upon the roller for raising and lowering the draft plate.
2. The combination with a hinged demand a door frame, of guides fixed to one side of the door near the bottom vertical edges of the door, a draft plate mounted in the guides for vertical movement with relation to the door, brackets carried by the guides, a stub shaft carried by one of the guides and held against rotation thereby, a roller rotatably mounted 'upon the shaft, a helical spring sleeved on the shaft and connected to the shaft and to the roller, straps secured to the roller and to the upper and lower edges of the draft plate, a cam plate fixed to that side of the door frame with which the swinging edge of the door contacts when closed, said cam plate having an upwardly inclined top edge, a crank arm fixed to the roller and movable over the inclined edge of the cam plate during the initial phase of opening movement of the door and during the final phase of the closing movement of the door, the roller being rotated by the spring and by the crank arm, straps adapted to be seselectively Wound upon the roller to cause the draft plate to move upwardly as the door is opened and downwardly as the door is closed, and a backing on that side of the draft plate next to the door adapted to contact with the floor when the draft plate is in lowered position.
3. A draft strip for doors comprising guides adapted to be fixed to one side of a door, a draft plate in the guides, a roller carried by the guides, a stationary cam plate, a crank arm on the roller adapted to traverse the cam plate, straps having their opposite terminals connected respectively to the draft plate and to the roller and reeled on and off the roller in movement of the draft plate, and spring means for actuating the draft plate and roller in a direction opposite to that in which they are actuated by movement of the crank 30 arm.
