Patented Oct. 3, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LINE CASTING MACHINE METAL-DELIVERY MOUTH WIPER 21 Claims.
The present application relates to a mouth piece wiper for type-casting machines or the like. The primary object of the invention is to provide means for efficiently wiping the metal-delivery mouth of a type-casting machine; and
more particularly to provide means of a character which may be attached to a standard machine without interference with other parts of the machine.
One embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in association with a Mergenthaler Linotype machine; but it will be obvious that, by making various minor changes in the details of the proportions of the parts, the attachment may be adapted for use with any other kind of typecasting machines.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the above and re- 550 Zated objects, my invention may be embodied in the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, t the drawings are illustrative only, and that nge may be made in the specific construction strated and described, so long as the scope of the appended claims is not violated.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will be seen that I have illustrated parts of a standard linotype machine including the metaldelivery mouth piece I!) and the cam shaft ll thereof.
In detail in Fig. 2, I have illustrated means, indicated generally by the reference numeral [2, and adapted to be applied radially to the hub l I of the first elevator cam 9 mounted on the cam shaft ll. Said cam means comprises an arcuate element l3 provided, intermediate its ends, with a substantially radially projecting cam member ll. Adjacent one end l4, said arcuate element is formed with a hole 10 through which projects a set screw l5 threadedly mounted in a standard tapped hole 12 in the hub H and adapted to 5 engage the shaft II at a point diametrically opposite the standard key l8. A jam nut 13 is threaded on the set screw 15 to hold the element l3 in place. It will be noted that the peripheral extent of the element I3 is greater than but less than whereby said element is given a solid seat on the hub II but may be radially applied thereto, without disturbing the cam 9, the cam shaft II, or any of the other elements associated therewith.
In Fig. 3, I have illustrated in detail a mounting bracket indicated generally by the reference numeral 19 and comprising a table portion 20 adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the left side frame element 2d of the linotype machine, a skirt 2 l, and a parallel skirt 22, said skirts being adapted to embrace opposite sides of said frame member 24. A set screw 23 is provided in the skirt 2! for clampingly securing the bracket l9 in place; but said bracket is 10- 25 cated by a screw 25 passing through a preformed perforation in the table portion 29 of the bracket I9. Said hole is provided, in the standard production of the linotype machine, to receive a screw which passes through said hole and threadedly engages in a standard tapped hole 14 formed in the flange 15 of the mold turning gear cover 16 shown fragmentally only in Fig. 3. This arrangement enforces proper positioning of the bracket l9 when the attachment is assembled with the machine.
Said bracket I9 is formed with an upstanding flange 26 perforated to receive a trunnion shank 21 provided with a head 28 and adapted to receive a nut 29 to secure the same in place. Be- 40 tween said flange 26 and said head 28, and journaled on the shank 21, is the hub 30 of a bell crank lever.
One arm 3! of said lever is formed with a camengaging surface 32 positioned in the path of the cam IT. The other arm 33 of said lever is formed, adjacent its free end, with a perforation 34 (see Fig. 5) for the reception of one end of a spring 35, the opposite end of which is suitably secured to a screw (not shown) set in a standard hole under the front bearing of the mold disc driving shaft. Obviously, the spring 35 resiliently holds the head 32 of the lever arm 3! in the path of the cam I1.
At its freeend, the lever arm 33 is formed 55 with a depressed table 36 upon which is pivotally mounted by means of a bolt 31 or the like, a finger 38 for a purpose later to be described. Said finger 38 is shiftable from the solid line position of Fig. 4 to the dotted line position of that figure; being limited in its counterclockwise movement, as viewed in said figure, by an upstanding top flange 39 formed on the table 36. The bracket I9 is provided with an extending finger 40 disposed, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in the path of the lever arm 33 to limit clockwise movement of the said lever arm as viewed from the left of Fig. 1.
According to standard practice, the frame element 24 is formed to provide at its end shown in Fig. 1, a tubular housing 4| in which is received the standard Linotype left-hand vise locking stud 42 which is formed with a reduced threaded extension 43. Upon said extension is threaded a nut 46 having an axially projecting sleeve 11 upon which is journaled the hub 44 of a second bell crank lever. The projecting end of the sleeve 11 engages and holds in place a washer 45 which is positioned between said hub 44 and the housing 4|; the sleeve 11 being so proportioned as to provide a working clearance for said hub 44 between said washer 45 and the head of nut 46. One arm 41 of said lever projects toward the arm 33 of the first-mentioned bell crank lever; and is preferably provided with a down-turned finger 48 engageable with the frame element 24 to limit counter-clockwise movement of said lever, as viewed in Fig. 1. When the finger 38 is in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and in solid lines in Fig. 4, it is operatively associated with the lever arm 41; but when said finger 38 is in the dotted line position of Fig. 4, movement of the lever arm 33 has no effect upon the lever arm 41.
The other arm 49 of the last-mentioned bell crank lever carries a wiper arm 59 positioned to sweep, upon clockwise oscillation of the arm 49, across the mouth piece l9. As is clearly shown in Fig. 4, said wiper arm 50 is secured to the lever arm 49 by means of two bolts and 52, said bolts passing through registering apertures in the wiper arm and the lever arm, and the lengths of said bolts being greater than the combined thickness of the wiper arm 5|] and lever arm 49. The bolt 5| is formed with a head 53 which, in the illustrated embodiment, engages the wiper arm 59; and a spring 54 is sleeved on said bolt 5| between a nut 55 and the lever arm 49. The bolt 52 is likewise formed with a head 56 which engages the wiper arm 50; and the spring 51 is sleeved on said bolt 52 between a nut 58 and the lever arm 49. Obviously, this mounting means comprises a resilient connection permitting resiliently-opposed movement of the wiper arm 50 in one direction substantially parallel to the pivotal axis of said lever arm 49.
A sleeve 59 of canvas or the like is snugly received upon the wiper arm 50, said sleeve being formed to present a surface of felt, or the like, toward the mouth piece It]. Preferably, said felt surface 6|] is permeated with a heat-resisting lubricant which may preferably be an oil or the like.
A wire 6| has one end clamped between the nut 58 and a companion nut 62 threaded on the bolt 52, and has its other end suitably secured to the felt side of the sleeve 59; as, for instance, by the rivets 63. Alternatively, one end of the wire 6| may be sharpened and forced into the body of the felt side of the sleeve 59, thereby providing a simpler connection. Thus, the sleeve 59 is prevented from moving relatively to the wiper arm 50.
Ordinarily, it will be desirable for the disclosed mechanism to operate at all times when the Linotype machine is operating. Obviously, as the cam shaft rotates, the cam I! will strike the head 32 to move the lever arms 3| and 33 in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed from the left of Fig. 1. Such movement of the lever arm 33, so long as the finger 38 is in the position of Fig. 1, will result in clockwise movement of the lever arms 41 and 49 and the wiper arm 5|], whereby the felt surface 60 will be swept across the mouth piece It]. When the head 32 drops off the cam H, the spring 35 tends to return the lever arms 3| and 33 to the position of Fig. 1. A spring 64, one end 18 of which is suitably secured to the lever arm 49 as by being entered in a hole 19 in said arm, has its other end anchored on the delivery slide stop screw 65, and simultaneously tends to return the wiper arm 50 and lever arms 41 and 49 to the positions of Fig. 1.
If it is desired, however, to operate the Linotype machine without operating the wiper mechanism, the finger 38 may be turned to the dotted line position of Fig. 4. Under such circumstances there is no cooperative association between the lever arm 33 and the lever arm 41, so that oscillation of the lever arm 33 will not affect the wiper arm 59. In that condition of the mechanism, the spring 64 will hold the wiper arm 50 continuously in the position of Fig. 1, the finger 4B preventing said spring from lifting said wiper arm 50 above the position illustrated in Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of a wiper for said mouth comprising a bell crank lever mounted on said machine upon an axis substantially perpendicular to the plane of said mouth, one arm of said lever being positioned to sweep across said mouth, and means actuated by said shaft and cooperating with the other arm of said lever to oscillate the same.
2. The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of a wiper for said mouth comprising a bell crank lever mounted on said machine upon an axis substantially perpenciular to the plane of said mouth, one arm of said lever being positioned to sweep across said mouth, a second bell crank lever pivotally mounted on said machine, and cam means on said shaft cooperable with one arm of said second lever to oscillate the same, the other arm of said second lever being operatively associated with the other arm of said first lever, whereby said first lever is oscillated upon oscillation of said lever.
3. The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of a wiper for said mouth comprising a bell crank lever mounted on said machine, one arm of said lever being positioned to sweep across said mouth, a second bell crank lever pivotally mounted on said machine, cam means on said shaft cooperable with one arm of said second lever to oscillate the same, and an element carried by the other arm of said second lever and shiftable selectively into and out of cooperative association with the other arm of said first lever.
4. The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of a wiper for said mouth comprising an arm pivotally mounted on the frame of said machine and positioned to sweep across said mouth, a
cam removably mounted onsaid shaft and comprising an arcuate element concentric with said shaft and carrying a radially projecting eccentric enlargement, a screw fixed to said shaft and engaging said arcuate element adjacent one end thereof, the other end of said element being more than 90 but less than 180 removed from said set screw, means securing said arcuate element to said screw and means operatively associated with said cam and said arm to actuate said arm upon rotation of said shaft.

The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of a wiper for said mouth comprising an arm pivotally mounted for oscillation about a standard part of the machine and positioned to sweep across said mouth, a cam removably secured to said shaft, a lever cooperative with said cam and with said arm to transmit motion from said shaft to said arm, a bracket providing a pivotal mounting for said lever, said bracket being supported on the frame of said machine, and an element cooperable with said bracket and with a hole formed in said frame in the standard production of said machine to position said bracket and said pivotal mounting to provide for proper cooperation between said lever and said cam and arm.

The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of a wiper mechanism for said mouth comprising a bracket adapted to be supported on the frame of said machine, means cooperating with said bracket and with a standard formation of said frame to enforce proper positioning of said bracket, said bracket providing a trunnion, a lever pivoted on said trunnion, a cam removably mounted on said shaft in cooperative relation to said lever, and a wiper arm pivotally mounted on a standard part of said machine and positioned to sweep across said mouth, said lever being operatively associated with said arm to swing the same about its pivotal mounting upon actuation by said cam.

The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of a wiper for said mouth comprising an arm pivotally mounted for oscillation about a standard part of the machine and positioned to sweep across said mouth, a cam removably secured to said shaft, said cam being mountable upon said shaft without disturbance of said shaft or elements associated therewith, a lever cooperative with said cam and with said arm to transmit motion from said shaft to said arm, a bracket providing a pivotal mounting for said lever, said bracket being supported on the frame of said machine, and an element cooperable with said bracket and with a hole formed in said frame in the standard production of said ma chine to position said bracket and said pivotal mounting to provide for proper cooperation between said lever and said cam and arm.
8. A mouth-wiping attachment for type-casting machines, comprising a wiper arm, a lever, a bracket providing a pivotal mounting for said lever, and a cam, said cam being attachable to a shaft of such machine, said arm being pivotally mountable on said machine to sweep across said mouth, said bracket being attachable to said machine, and said lever being thereby positioned to transmit motion from said cam to said arm, all of said parts being designed and proportioned to cooperate when attached to standard parts of said machine.
9. In a mouth-wiping attachment for typecasting machines, a wiper armadapted to sweep across the metal-delivery mouth of such machine, and a textile sleeve snugly fitting on said arm, said sleeve presenting a surface of felt or the like toward said mouth.
10. In a mouth-Wiping attachment for typecasting machines, a wiper arm adapted to sweep across the metal-delivery mouth of such machine, and a textile sleeve snugly fitting on said arm and presenting a surface of felt or the like toward said mouth, said felt surface being permeated with a heat-resisting material.
11. In a mouth-wiping attachment for typecasting machines, a lever, a wiper arm, means providing a resilient connection between said wiper arm and one arm of said lever and permitting resiliently-opposed movement of said wiper arm relative to said lever arm in one direction substantially parallel to the pivotal axis of said lever, and means carried by said wiper arm and presenting an absorbent surface toward said mouth.
12. In a mouth-wiping attachment for typecasting machines, a wiper arm adapted to sweep across the metal-delivery mouth of such machine, a textile sleeve carried by said arm and presenting a surface of felt or the like toward said mouth, and means secured to said sleeve and to said arm for holding said sleeve against movement with respect to said arm.
13. In a mouth-wiping attachment for typecasting machines, a lever, a wiper-arm, at least two headed elements passing through said arm and lever to connect the same, the length of said elements between their heads being greater than the combined thickness of said arm and lever, resilient means positioned on said elements between the connected members and said heads, a textile sleeve carried by said arm, and formed to provide a surface of felt or the like, and means connected to one of said elements and to said sleeve to hold the latter against movement relative to said arm.
14. In a mouth-wiping attachment for typecasting machines, a lever, a wiper arm, at least two headed bolts passing through said arm and lever to connect the same, springs sleeved on said bolts, nuts on said bolts engaging said springs to compress them against said connected members, a textile sleeve carried by said arm, and formed to provide a surface of felt or the like, an additional nut carried by at least one of said bolts beyond said first nut, and a wire clamped between said additional nut and its companion and fixed to said sleeve to hold the latter against movement relative to said arm.
15. The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of wiping mechanism for said mouth comprising a lever pivotally mounted on said machine, one arm of said lever being positioned to sweep across said mouth, a cam positioned on said shaft, a secondlever pivotally mounted on said machine, one arm of said second lever being operatively associated with said cam and the other arm of said second lever being operatively associated with said first lever, said cam being operable upon rotation of said shaft, to shift both of said levers in one direction, and spring means connected to shift said levers in the opposite direction.
16. The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of wiping mechanism for said mouth compristil ing a lever pivotally mounted on said machine, one arm of said lever being positioned to sweep across said mouth, a cam positioned on said shaft, a second lever pivotally mounted on said machine, one arm of said second lever being operatively associated with said cam and the other arm of said second lever being operatively associated with said first lever, said cam being operable, upon rotation of said shaft, to shift said second lever to move said wiper arm from inoperative position across said mouth, and spring :means connected to return said wiper arm to -inoperative position.
17. The combination with a type-casting machine having a shaft and a metal-delivery mouth, of wiping mechanism for said mouth comprising a lever pivotaly mounted on said machine, one arm of said lever being positioned to sweep across said mouth, a cam positioned on said shaft, a second lever pivotally mounted on said machine, one arm of said second lever being operatively associated with said cam and the other arm of said second lever being operatively associated with said first lever, said cam being operable, upon rotation of said shaft, to shift both of said levers in one direction, spring means connected to said first lever to move the same in the opposite direction, and spring means connected to the second lever to move the same in the opposite direction.
18. A wiper attachment for the mouth of a standard Linotype machine comprising a cam radially engageable with the hub of the first elevator cam of said machine, and attachable thereto through the medium of a nut mounted on the set screw for said elevator cam, a bracket adapted to be supported on the left side frame element of said machine and locatable thereon by means of a screw passing through a preformed hole in said bracket and engaging in the hole provided in said machine for the mold turning gear cover securing screw, said bracket being formed to provide a trunnion, a bell crank lever journaled on said trunnion with one arm operatively associated with said first-named cam, a second bell crank lever journaled on the extended axial sleeve of a nut threadedly mounted on the left-hand vise-locking stud of said machine and held in place between the head of said nut and a washer located between said lever and the housing for said stud, and a wiper arm carried by one arm of said second lever and positioned to sweep across said mouth, the other arm of said first lever being operatively associated with the other arm of said second lever.
19. A wiper attachment for the mouth of a standard Linotype machine comprising a cam radially engageable with the hub of the first elevator cam of said machine and attachable thereto through the medium of a nut mounted on the set screw for said elevator cam, a bracket adapted to be supported on the left side frame element of said machine and locatable thereon by means of a screw passing through a preformed hole in said bracket and engaging in the hole provided in said machine for the mold turning gear cover securing screw, said bracket being formed to provide a trunnion, a bell crank lever journaled on said trunnion with one arm operatively associated with said first-named cam, a spring engaged between the other arm of said lever and a point on said machine adjacent the front bearing of the mold disc driving shaft and resiliently holding said one arm of said lever in the path of said first-named cam, a second bell crank lever journaled on the extended axial sleeve of a nut threadedly mounted on the lefthand vise-locking stud of said machine and held in place between the head of said nut and a washer located between said lever and the housing for said stud, a wiper arm carried by one arm of said second lever and positioned to sweep across said mouth, the other arm of said first lever being operatively associated with the other arm of said second lever, and a spring engaged between said wiper arm and the delivery slide stop screw and resiliently holding said wiper arm above said mouth.
20. A wiper attachment for the mouth of a standard Linotype machine comprising a cam radially engageable with the hub of the first elevator cam of said machine and attachable thereto through the medium of a nut mounted on the set screw for said elevator cam, a bracket adapted to be supported on the left side frame element of said machine and locatable thereon by means of a screw passing through a preformed hole in said bracket and engaging in the hole provided in said machine for the mold turning gear cover securing screw, said bracket being formed to provide a trunnion, a bell crank lever journaled on said trunnion with one arm operatively associated with said first-named cam, a spring engaged between the other arm of said lever and a point on said machine adjacent the front bearing of the mold disc driving shaft and resiliently holding said one arm of said lever in the path of said first-named cam, a second bell crank lever journaled on the extended axial sleeve of a nut threadedly mounted on the lefthand vise-locking stud of said machine and held in place between the head of said nut and a washer located between said lever and the housing for said stud, a wiper arm carried by one arm of said second lever and positioned to sweep across said mouth, a spring engaged between said wiper arm and the delivery slide stop screw and resiliently holding said wiper arm above said mouth, and a finger adjustably carried by the other arm of said first lever and selectively movable into and out of cooperative association with the other arm of said second lever.
21. In a mouth-wiping attachment for typecasting machines, a lever, a wiper arm, means providing a resilient connection between the said wiper arm and one arm of said lever and permitting resiliently-opposed rectilinear movement of said wiper arm relative to said lever arm in one direction, and means carried by said wiper arm and presenting an absorbent surface toward said mouth.
