IMPROVEM ENT IN CUTTING-GAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,236, dated July 8, 1879; application filed April 7, 1879.v

To all whom it may concern:

Be 'it known that I, J All/LES W. NEWKIRK, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illin0is, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Gages, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom view, Fig. 2 a front view, and Fig. 3 a side view, of a cutting-gage embodying my invention.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

A is the body of the cutter, which consists of a piece made preferably of metal and adapted to be grasped with facility, as well as to constitute a stock for the cutter. B is an arm orprojection extending laterally from one edge of the body A, and I make a V-shaped groove, a, in the working-face of this extension, the notch extending from end to end thereof, as shown.

By this means a shoulder, C, is formed to receive one edge of the material to be cut, and the point or end of the cutter, by entering the groove a, as will hereinafter appear, is provided with bearings, such as to prevent it from being twisted or drawn out of its proper position by the pressure of the leather against the blade (hiring use, and the cutting-edge is thus always held in a right position for work.

D is a laterally-adjustable knife or cutter. This knife consists of a rectangular piece, one part or arm of which is adapted to lie firmly on one face of the body A, as shown at b, and the other part or arm, which is the blade, extends to the part B, the point of the blade enterin g the groove a.

In the part b of the cutter is a slot, 1), and through this slot a thumb-screw passes into the body A.

It will be perceived from the foregoing description, and from reference to the drawings, that the cutteror blade may be adjusted laterally to and from the shoulder (l, and that the width of the thong to be cut may be thus gaged.

It will also be perceived that the shoulder O is fixed, but that, though fixed, it serves as a guide to control the position of the leather with respect to the cutter, while the cutter, being adjustable laterally with relation to the shoulder, admits of the width of the thongs extends laterally from the shoulder O in .the direction in which the cutter is adjustable, and is arranged in the line traveled by the point of the cutter, and the said extension thus performs the function of holding the leather to the cutter, in whatever position the cutter may be set.

To use the cutter, it should be held in the right hand, and one edge of the material from which the thong is to be out should be held to the shoulder O, and the material drawn through the cutter in a direction to be cut by the blade.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
