IMPROVEM ENT IN VENTI LATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,215, dated July 8, 1879 application filed February 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAYES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ventilator, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device'readily placed in position wherever desired, by any person, skilled or not, and which, when so placed, will effectually exclude rain or snow, 850., while permitting outward or inward currents of air to pass freely, and containing within itself a means whereby said aircurrents may be diminished or entirely excluded at pleasure, provision being made against leakage or drip.
My invention consists of a ventilating device formed to sit into or fit into an aperture through wall or partition of a building or other suitable structure, the face-plate of the same extending beyond the sides, and its edge, all around, provided with an inward or inturned flange having sharp edge adapted to cut into the wall as the plate is pressed up closely, so as to make a tight joint and provide against leakage at that point, and the said face-plate provided with a half-cylinder projection reaching outward from its face, the lower half of which is perforated or screened, forming an air inlet or outlet, and its upper half plain, forming a hood to protect the screened opening below. Perforations are provided at the corners of said plate, outside its inner walls, through which screws, rivets, &c., pass in securing the device to its position. At the back of said face-plate, extending backward to any desired distance, are walls, forming sides, also bottom, and, as desired, a top. At a proper distance an upturned flange is formed to bottom plate as a set-back or gutter, to turn back any water that may have found its way to the interior of device, and at a suitable point is provided a valve or damper, of any suitable size, shape, or style, to diminish or entirely exclude air-currents, where desired, the whole, when combined, forming a device capable of being transported safely to any distance, readily applied, and effectual in action. While allowing free passage for air-currents, it effectually excludes rain, snow, &c., provides against leakage or drip, and allows the air-currents to be limited or diminished, and, when desired, entirely excluded or shut off.

What I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A ventilating device consisting of a box or casin g formed to set into or fit into an ap erture through wall or partition of a building or other suitable structure, the face-plate of said device extending all around beyond the walls of casin g or case to cover the joining, and said extension provided with an inturned flange having sharp edge adapted to cut into the wall as the plate is pressed up closely to make a tight joint, and the said face-plate pro vided with a half-eylinder projection reaching outward from its face, the lower half of which is perforated or screened, forming air inlet or outlet, and the upper half plain, forming a rents may be limited or entirely excluded, the hood to protect the screened opening below, whole being arranged and combined substanand the interior of said casing provided with tially as described and set forth.
