IMPROVEMENT IN TRUMPET-GUIDES FOR CARDING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,170, dated July 1, 1879; application filed April 28, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD B. TIBBETTs, of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Trumpet-Guide for Oarding- Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The obj eet of this invention is to prevent the dirt, seeds, and other litter from the sliver from falling back into the Work.

It consists of a pan provided with a shield and oval tubes or casings placed in front of and under the doffer, so that the shield partially covers the lower calender-roll, and the tubes or casings entirely cover the shaft thereof, the pan catches the litter, and the incasing of the roll and shaft prevents the sliver, when broken, from catching and winding on the same.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of the guide and pan, showingits position with relation to the doifer and calender-rolls; and Fig. 2 is a top plan of the pan and guide.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, A is the doffer ofa carding-machine. B is the upper calender-roll. B is the lower calender-roll, and O is the shaft on which the roll B revolves. D is the pan, made of tin or other suitable sheet metal, which is placed under the forward part of the doffer and between it and the lower calender-roll, and at a height just below the level of the shaft C. The pan is designed to be of the same length as the doft'er, and at its rear edge is provided with aledge, a. At the front edge, on either side of the calender-roll B", is

an oval tube or case, D, for inclosing the shaft 0. .To the ends of the tube next to the calender-roll are semicircular flanges b b, which support a shield, E, extending from the bottom of the pan a little more than half-way over the flanges, thus covering one-half of the surface of the calender-roll nearest the dotfer, as shown in Fig. 1. Fis the trumpet-guide, supported over the shield E by an arm, 0, attached at its lower end to the bottom of the pan. The pan is supported on the stand that supports the shaft of the calender roll. The sliver, as it is combed off the dofier, passes through the trumpet-guide, and thence between the calender-rolls.

The seed, dirt, flyings, and bunches of waste falling from the sliver drop on the pan D, where they are retained and prevented from falling back into the sliver, and in case the sliver breaks, the shield E and easing D prevent the broken sliver from being caught by the calender-roll or shaft and being wound up.-

The litter accumulated 0n the pan can be readily brushed off ,without liability of injuring the wire on the doffer.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in trumpet-guides for carding-machines, the pan D, with back ledge, a, shield E, semicircular flanges b, and cases D- D, in combination with the trumpet-guide F, lower calender-roll, B, and shaft 0, as and for the purpose substantially as described.
