Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. MORRIS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,691, dated October 5, 1858.
p thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in arranging two or more trip or tilt hammers on a suitable foundation to strike either at the same time or alternately, on iron held upon one anvil, which should be movable, and as it would necessarily be very' heavy I ,arrange a series of rollers beneath it, on
which the anvil can be moved with facility. This arrangement of hammers in connection with a movable anvil, is most useful for hammering large plates or sheets of iron, that could not easily be moved over an anvil under a single hammer.
Figure l is a front elevation of a gang (four in number) of B. Hughes atmospheric trip hammers, operating in connection with a movable anvil. Fig. 2 is a. plan View of the same; the same letters refer to like parts on both drawings. A is the hammers, B is the movable anvil and O the rollers.
For the purpose of hammering boiler plates or sheets of iron, I put down four of B. I-Iughes patent atmospheric trip hammers, of l2 in. lift and 12 in. cylinder, on a suitable foundation having them stand as close together as possible, two upon each side of the anvil, and arranged so that the united length or breadth of the hammer faces will cover the entire width 0f the plate of iron to be hammered. Then I use an anvil of cast iron, chilled face, about 3 ft. X 9 ft. and 2O in. thick, which I place upon two rows of iron rollers about 12 in. long and 6 in. diameter, under the rollers I have a large plate or plates of iron resting on a well c0nstructed foundation of heavy timbers; these timbers and plates should extend about ten feet on each side of the hammers, so that the anvil can be run out clear of the hammers on either side.
IVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of a gang of trip or tilt hammers substantially as described in connection with the movable anvil constructed in the manner and for the purpose specified.
D. A. MORRIS.
