This invention relates to a method of working the heel portions separately ontoa stocking.
It is known to produce stockings in one operations without the heel portions and to work the 5 latter onto the high heel portions in a subsequent operation, usually on a separate machine. According to this method, the high .heel portions are separated from the sole portions and transferred to the machine working on the heel portions. The inner longitudinal edge of the heel portions is then united with the sole portions by a seam later on.
To avoid the formation of seams in such stockings it has further been proposed to transfer also the sole portions to the machine working on the heel portions and to arrange them inside near the latter. During the working of the heel portions the sole portions are then hung over outwardly to the extent of one needle after the production of a heel course, so that the sole portions, corresponding to the production of the heel portions, are worked together with the inner longitudinal edges thereof.
Compared with the known art, the invention is characterized by the feature that the heel portions in their entirety are continually hung over inwardly during their production by means of narrowers in such manner that the meshes of their inner edges gradually pass to the needles 30 holding the sole portions and are knocked over with them.
This method affords the advantage that the narrowers pierce the meshes to be hung over only once, as always only a newly formed course of the heel portions is hung over in contradistinction to the old method which requires for instance piercing of the inner meshes of the sole portions to the extent of the number of courses contained in the heel portions, whereby the transfer points of the sole portions are subjected to excessive strain.
When stockings with their heel portions are worked in a single operation, it is known to unite the inner longitudinal edges of the heel portions head in the machine for carrying out the new method of two parts corresponding to the width of the high heel portions, which are displaced inwardly according to the extent of the putting back of the heel portions, so that the needles holding the initial edges of the sole portions are gradually pressed.
By way of example, the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 showsthe transfer of the unfinished stocking to I the machine working on the heel portions Fig. 2 shows the working on the heel portions; Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic front view of the knitting tools of a section of a heel working machine; and Fig. 4, a detail view of the section.
Referring to the drawing, the stocking consisting of the leg and instep without the heel portions is cut at the point of contact of the high heel and sole portions on both sides to separate the high heel from the sole portions. The high heel portions l are then transferred in known manner to the needles 2 of the machine working on the heel portions and also, according to the invention, the initial edges of the sole portions 3. These initial edges are transferred to the needles positioned inside near the needles which carry the end courses of the high heel portions I. The sole portions 3 are, for this purpose turned over inwardly, as indicated in Fig. 1. Then the heel portions 4 are worked onto the high heel portions l in such manner that the heel portions 4 during their production are in their entirety continually hung over inwardly by means of narrowers. After a course of the heel portions 4 has been worked the latter are put back to the extent of one needle, so that always the innermost mesh of the heel courses is placed on the adjacent needle holding the sole portions, on both sides of the goods, whereupon these needles are knocked over also. In this manner the heel portions are united with the sole portions during their production, .as shown in Fig. 2. It is of course possible to put back the heel portions only in every other course to the extent of two needles.
To permit successive knocking over of the v needles holding the initial edges of the sole portions 3 the machine producing the heel portions must be specially equipped by forming for instance the, presser bar of each section of two parts corresponding to the width of the high heel portions I. These two portions of the presser bar are provided on the machine independently of the sinker head and are displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the machine. During production of the heelportions 4 the twomeinbers of the presser bar are simply displaced inwardly corresponding to the inward motion of the heel portions, whereby always those needles of the sole portions are pressed also which have received a mesh from the heel portions. The same end can be attained by forming the sinker head of each section of two parts having the width mentioned and inwardly displacing these two parts during working of the heel portions according to their inward displacement. This affords the advantage that the presser bar need not be separated from the sinker head which might be of the usual type. Fig. 3 shows a heel working machine of this kind, in which 5 is the needle bar, 6 desginates the knocking over bits and the sinker head comprises the two parts I which can be moved back together with their presser bar 8.
In the meshes of the initial edges of the sole portions 3 the needles concerned of the bar 5 move idly up and down during production of the heel portions 4, unless these meshes are knocked over by the receding motion of the parts I of the sinker head. If these meshes of the sole portions 3 are held in the usual manner on the knocking over bits 6, they will be widened. To avoid this widening, it is proposed to provide above the bits 6 and in front of the needles of the bar 5 which hold the initial courses of the sole portions 3 the strippers 8, III which on the outside hold the meshes in position on the bits 6. Toward the inside, the strippers 9, III are upwardly directed in oblique manner, so that the meshes of the initial edges of the sole portions 3 located here can cooperate in the ascending and descending motion of the needles. During working of the heel portions 4 the strippers -9, 10 are moved in together with the members I of, the sinker head with the result that always only those meshes of the sole portions 3 are held on the bits 6 which have to be knocked over. Seen from above, the two strippers 9, I0 are arranged one after another so as to be able to overlap when the members I are put back.
I claim:
Method of working the heel portions separately onto the high heel portions of a stocking produced in one operation on a flat knitting frame without the heel portions, consisting in separating the high heel and sole portions, transferring the sole portions to the machine working on the heel portions inside near the high heel portions to connect the sole portions with the inner edges of the heel portions and hanging the heel portions during their production in their entirety continually inwardly by means of narrowers to place the meshes of their inner edges gradually on the needles holding the sole portions, which are then knocked over also.
