Description

Filed Jan. 15, 1937 Inventor:
. I WW Patented Aug. 1, 1939 v UNITED STATES PATENT oFFiCs CLOSING DEVICE FOR- BELT FASTENERS Curt Matthaei, Ofienbachon-the-Main, Germany Application January 15, 193'1, Serial No.'120,-773- In Germany February 28, 1936 3 Claims. (Cl. 1-494) The invention relates to a clamping or clospermitted to assume positions independent of the ing device for belt fasteners, made of V-shaped general direction of the springs. The jaw posiwire clips with hooked limbs, which has osciltion is preferably determined by the staple suplating pressure jaws arranged on each side of port or holder, and the staples themselves. Furthe comb holder. The invention has for its obther, the springs exert in closed jaw position 5 ject an improvement of these known clamping (Fig. 3) a downwardly directed force component devices, by providing pressure jaws which, upon which is transmitted to the staples, and proinsertion of the wire staples, clamps or hooks moting the penetration of downwardly curved adapt themselves to the angle of inclination of staple points. The roof-shaped staple holder 6 the staple shanks and come together parallel to (Figure 4) has slots 1 transversely to its lon- 10 each other in ultimate position. The invention gitudinal direction, to take the staple bend (Fighas for another object to provide a more useful ures 2 and 3. The turned over lips 8 of the staple clamping device of this nature by employing a holder engage the upper Y limbs 5, 5 of the staple support made in such a manner that an staple support 3 whereby the staple holder 6 is 5 angularly roof-shaped staple holder can be easily held in the correct position between the pressing 5 and interchangeably fitted thereon. jaws for the insertion of the fastening staples or The object of the invention is attained by the clips. In the clamping device according to the pressure jaws being fixed to the staple support invention staple holders 6 of any width may be by means of freely expanding and flexible spiral used so that, for example, if belts are used which springs. Furthermore the staple support has, are wider than the pressing jaws I, the number 20 according to the invention, a double Y-shaped of staples necessary for the whole width of the cross-section and the spiral springs of the pressbelt may be inserted into holder 6 which can be ing jaws are fixed on the lower Y flange whilst moved along supports 3 for application of the the upper Y flange carries the staple holder in a jaws to consecutive groups of staples. The hooks movable and interchangeable manner. are held in the usual way by a pin which is adapt- An embodiment of the clamping device accorded to the flattened part of the roof-shaped comb. ing to the invention is shown by way of example For very thin belts hooks are made of very thin in the accompanying drawing, in which wire for the insertion of which a tool especially Figure 1 is an isometric viewof the clamping designed for the purpose has hitherto been neces- 3 device, sary. This is no longer required with the clamp- 0 Figure 2 is a cross-section with inserted staples ing device according to the invention, since it is before the jaws are closed, merely necessary to use a staple holder with suit- Figure 3 is a cross-section similar to Figure ably narrower subdivisions for the thin hooks, 2 but after the closing and fitted to staple support 3. 35 Figures 4 and 5 are plan and side views, respec- The clamping device according to the inven- 35 tively, of the staple holder. tion is preferably operated by means of a vise,
As shown in Figure l the pressure jaws I, I the jaws of which engage the outside of the are fastened to a staple support 3 by means of pressure jaws I of the clamping device. Naturalfreely expanding and flexible spiral springs 2, 2, ly the pressing together of the pressing jaws is two springs being preferably arranged on each possible in many other ways. The operation of side. The comb holder 3 is of double Y-shaped the clamping device according to the invention cross-section and the spiral springs 2, 2 of the can be easily seen from Figures 2 and 3. Bepressure jaws are fastened to the lower Y limbs fore the commencement of the staple insertion, 4, 4 at the side opposite to the staple holding the pressing jaws I rest on the staple support or portion. As shown in Fig. 2, spring 2 is fastened staple holder. Upon pressure being exerted, the 45 to jaw I by means of plugs II and I2 having outspiral springs 2 expand as well as bend between side threads and a hole or inside thread, respecthe pressing jaws I and the flange portions tively, through which screws I3 and I4 are in- 4 of. the staple support 3. As the holder 6 serted. The oppositely located Y limbs 5, 5 of serves in this movement of the spiral springs the support 3 carry the roof-shaped staple holder and of the pressing jaws at the same time as 50 B for the fastening staples or hooks. In this support for the pressure jaws, the position of manner, the jaws I are held by springs 2 in pothe inner surfaces of the pressing jaws adapts sition on either side of, and substantially paralitself during the whole pressing-in process to lel to staple support 3, as shown in Fig. 2; since the angle of inclination of the staple shanks. the springs expand as well as bend, the jaws are Consequently the insertion of the hooks always takes place with the pressure surfaces of the jaws fully applied to the hook shanks up to the time when a complete parallel position is reached after the pressing in is completed (Figure 3). The belt into which the hooks are pressed in is omitted from the drawing for the sake of clearness.
What I claim is:
1. Device for inserting wire staples of the hooked limb type used as belt fasteners, comprising a support for said staples, a pressure jaw,
said support.
2. Device for inserting wire staples of the type used as belt fasteners, comprising a support, means for removably mounting a staple holder on said support, two pressure jaws, and spiral springs fastened to said support below said holder, and to said jaws and extending at an angle to each other freely to hold jaws one on each side, respectively, of said holder.
3. Device for inserting wire staples of the type used as belt fasteners, comprising a support hav ing an upper and a lower flange, means for slidably mounting a staple holder on said upper flange, spiral springs mounted on said lower flange extending upwardly on either side of said holder, and pressure jaws fastened to said springs, one on either side, respectively, of said holder.
