Thus it will be seen that the handle as formed may be raised or lowered to the positions shown. That it is definitely stopped in either of the two positions and that when in either position, particularly the down position, the shape of brackets I2 is such as will present a pleasing appearance. In this connection, it will be noted 'in Figure 4 that the upper edges of caps 24 are very little above the top of members l2. Thus the hand piece is protected and the device presents a pleasing appearance because its end brackets taper outwardly and downwardly.

Clearly my device is strong and since the handle is metal clad at its ends, the covering and its fastening strip will be firmly held into position and protected against injury, as compared to the conventional hand luggage handle wherein the entire hand piece is U-shaped and completely covered by leather or fabric, which at best, is not satisfactory, largely because it is difiicult to smoothly and tightly fold the covering over such an irregular shape and glue it in a smooth permanent manner, and further, the small ends are left weak and easily injured or the holding rivet is pulled through the small end of the handle rendering the handle and frequently the case worthless.

Having thus shown and described my invention I claim:

1. A carrying device of the class described, comprising two spaced brackets being secured to the member to be carried, a rigid hand grip adapted to loosely fill the space between said brackets and having links pivotally secured at one end to opposite ends of said hand grip, the other ends of said links having slots and being pivotally and slidably secured to said brackets by means of pins which are loosely embraced by said slots, whereby said hand grip may be raised and lowered to operating and inoperating positions, projections on the upper and lower edges of said links adapted to act as stops for the operative and inoperative positions of said hand grip.

2. A carrying device of the class described, comprising two spaced brackets being secured to the member to be carried, a rigid hand grip adapted to loosely fill the space between said brackets and having links pivotally secured at one end to opposite ends of said hand grip, the other ends of said links having slots and being pivotally and slidably secured to said brackets by means of pins which are loosely embraced by said slots, whereby said hand grip may be raised and lowered to operating and inoperating positions, said hand grip comprising a bar having secured over each end thereof a metal shroud having spaced depending ears adapted to loosely embrace the inner ends of said links, said brackets adapted to form vertical slots which loosely embrace the sides of said links, said links having projections on opposite sides thereof and being positioned to thereby act as limit stops within said vertical slots.

3. A carrying device of the class described, comprising two spaced brackets being secured to the member to be carried, a rigid hand grip adapted to loosely fill the space between said brackets and having links pivotally secured at one end to opposite ends of said hand grip, the other ends of said links having slots and being pivotally and slidably secured to said brackets by means of pins which are loosely embraced by said slots whereby said hand grip may be raised and lowered to operating and inoperating positions, said brackets adapted to form vertical slots which loosely embrace the sides of said links and having means cooperating with said links and pins to lock said handle against movement when held in an operating position.
