The invention aims primarily to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive, yet a very desirable childs swing having novel side guards pivotally mounted in a unique manner to fold inwardly into the angle between the seat and the back of the swing when the latter is not in use.

A further object is to provide a novel foot rest which also may be swung into the angle between the seat and the back when not in use.

A still further aim is to provide a foot rest which may be readily adjusted forwardly or rearwardly.

Yet another aim is to provide a foot rest which may not only be adjusted forwardly and rearwardly but may be folded upwardly and rearwardly when not in use.

A still further object is to provide a unique front guard rod with novel provision for holding it in any vertically adjusted position.

With the foregoing in View, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawing.

A preferred construction has been shown and will be specifically described, with the understanding, however, that variations may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed.

A suitable seat 5 and back 6 connected therewith, are provided, said seat and back being of wood, metal or composition. Near each of its front corners, the seat 5 is provided with an opening 1, and the back 6 is formed with openings 8 spaced above said seat and located near its vertical edges. Two vertical side guards 9 are provided, each guard being preferably formed from a single length of heavy wire bent to provide a front vertical rod I0, an elevated rod H projecting rearwardly from the upper end of said front rod Ill and a suspending eye or loop l2 for the attachment of a suspending rope or the like I3. The two rods l0 pass downwardly through the openings 1 and the rods I I pass rearwardly through the openings 8, all of said rods having hooked terminals M which prevent accidental withdrawal from the openings. The rods are loosely received in these openings and the hooks 14 are free of any attachment to the back and the seat. Thus the two side guards 9 may be folded inwardly into overlapped relation within the angle between the back and seat, as shown in Fig. 3, such movement being readily permitted by the loose pivotal connections between said side uards and said back and seat.

A U-shaped foot rest I5 is provided, said foot rest having rearwardly projecting carrying arms or rods 11 which rest upon the front-to-rear edge portions of the seat 5. The rear portion of each rod or arm ll is bent laterally outward as at [8, is then extended rearwardly and downwardly as shown at 19 and is finally bent laterally inward at 20 under the seat, thereby forming yokes which slidably and pivotally embrace the front-to-rear edge portions of said seat. Thus, the foot rest I 5 may be adjusted forwardly and rearwardly ac cording to the size of the seat occupant, and when the swing is not in use, said foot rest may be swung into the angle between the back and seat, as seen in Fig. 3.

A front guard rod 2| is provided, said rod 2| having an eye 22 at one end embracing one of the rods l0, and a hook 23 at its other end detaohably engaged with the other rod It). When the hook 23 is engaged with its respective rod, it holds the front guard rod 2| in such position that the eye 22 is canted upon the rod with which it is engaged, the eye thus frictionally gripping the rod to hold the front guard in any desired position. When the hook 23 is disengaged from the rod normally engaged thereby, the rod 2| may be swung to such a position that the grip of the eye 22 upon the rod therein, is relieved, thus permitting free sliding of said eye to position rod 2| at any desired elevation. When the swing is not in use, the rod 2! may have its hook 23 engaged with one of the eyes or loops l2 as seen in Fig. 3.

From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made for carrying out the objects of the invention. Moreover, it will be clear that while the foot rest l5 and the front guard 2| are intended primarily for association with a swing, they could be used to equal advantage in connection with any other seating device having the necessary construction to coact therewith.

I claim:

1. A swing comprising a seat, a back connected therewith, and two vertical substantially rigid side guards pivotally connected with both said seat and said back and foldable inwardly into the angle between said seat and back, said side guards having portions for connection to suspending ropes or the like.

2. A swing comprising a seat, a back connected therewith, and two vertical side guards each having connected vertical and horizontal rod portions pivotally connected with said seat and said back respectively and foldable inwardly into the angle between said seat and back, said side guards having portions for connection to suspending ropes or the like.

3. A swing comprising a seat, a back connected therewith, and two vertical substantially rigid side guards pivotally connected with both said seat and said back and foldable inwardly to positions in which they incline from said seat to said back, said side guards having portions for connection to suspending ropes or the like, the substantially rigid nature of said guards permitting them to normally brace said back with respect to said seat.

4. A swing comprising a seat, a back connected therewith, said seat having an opening in each of its front corner portions, said back having an opening near each of its vertical edges and spaced above said seat, and two vertical side guards having pivot hooks loosely engaged with said openings and permitting said guards to fold inwardly into the angle between said seat and back, said guards having portions for connection to suspending ropes or the like.

5. A swing comprising a seat, a back connected therewith, said seat having an opening in each of its front corner portions, said back having an opening near each of its vertical edges and spaced above said seat, and two vertical side guards having substantially horizontal rod portions passing loosely through said openings of said back, and substantially vertical rod portions passing loosely through said openings of said seat, all of said rod portions being provided with hooked terminals preventing accidental removal from said openings and allowing said guards to fold inwardly into the angle between said back and seat, said guards having portions for connection to suspending ropes or the like.

6. A swing comprising a seat, a back connected with said seat, a foot rest pivotally connected with said seat to fold upwardly and rearwardly into the angle between said seat and back, and side guards for said seat also pivotally mounted to fold into said angle, said side guards having portions for connection with suspending ropes or the like.

7. In combination with a seat, a foot rest having carrying arms lying upon said seat near the front-to-rear edges of the same, said arms having yoke portions at their rear ends slidably embracing said edges of said seat, permitting forward and rearward adjustment of the foot rest.

8. In combination with a seat, a foot rest having carrying arms lying upon said seat near the front-to-rear edges of the same, said arms having yoke portions at their rear ends slidably and pivotally embracing said edges of said seat, permitting forward and rearward adjustment of the foot rest and upward and rearward folding thereof to a position over said seat.

9. In combination with a seat, two substantially parallel rods slidable forwardly and rearwardly upon said seat near the front-to-rear edges thereof, the front portions of said rods being provided with a foot rest, the rear portions of said rods being bent laterally outward, then extended rearwardly and downwardly, and then bent laterally inward under the seat.

10. In combination with a seat and side guards therefor having vertical rods at their front portions, a front guard rod extending between said vertical rods, said front guard rod having an eye on one end surrounding one of said vertical rods, the other end of said front guard being provided with a hook to engage the other of said vertical rods to hold said front guard rod in a normal position in which said eye is canted and frictionally grips said one vertical rod, said eye being freely slidable on said one vertical rod when said front guard rod is so moved as to release the grip of said eye on said one vertical rod.
