2 Claims.
The present invention relates to cardboard boxes oi a type within which articles of merchandise are intended to be sold, the invention having for its prin'iary object to provide a box of this character which includes a bottom portion and a lid or cover portion, preferably adapted for teiescoping engagement and providing both the bottom and top portions o1" the boxwith an inner permanently attached ornamental cover and placing an outer or service cov er over the ornamental cover and providing means for conveniently removing the outer or service cover when desired, in order that the ornamental cover may be exposed to view.
A further object is to provide a merchandising box of this character in which the outer removable cover may be made of material commoniy used in stock boxes and adapted to contain printed matter advertising the contents of the box or the like, and providing means for removably securing said outer or service cover to the box without causing a mutilation of the inner or ornamental cover upon the removal of said service cover.
An additional object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and. attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise Well adapted for the purposes for Which the same was intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the lid of a box showing the outer cover in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a similar View of the bottom of a box.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is .a group perspective View of the top o-f the box and the blanks forming the inner and outer covers therefor.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a. preferred embodiment of the invention, the numerals 5 and t designate the top and bottom sections respectively of a telescoping box, each being of substantially rectangular formation and the top including side walls l, end Walls il and a top Wall 9 whereas the bottom t includes side walls i0, end walls li and a bottom wall l2.
The top and bottom portions of the box are preferably constructed of cardboard and secured to the outer surfaces oi' the top and bottom sections is an inner cover I3, which may be formed of paper or other suitable material and preferably adapted to contain any desired ornamentation printed or otherwise placed thereon to add to the attractiveness thereof. The inner cover' i3 is preferably secured to the outer surfaces of the box by gluing or the like.
The inner cover i3 includes a central portion iii, side flaps i5 and end ilaps iii adapted toa be folded respectively against the side and end Walls of the box. The flaps l5 and i5 also include pointed tabs il' adapted to `be foldedY against an adjacent wall of the box as shown by the dotted lines in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings.
E'laced over the inner cover i3 is an outer cover 2&3 which likewise includes a central portion i9, side flaps 2@ and end flaps 2l, said flaps also being provided with tabs 22 and arranged for positioning over the box in the same manner as the inner cover i3.
Arranged along the outer edges of the flaps 2li and 2i are longitudinal extensions 23 and 24 respectively connected to their respective flaps by lines of perforations 25. The extensions 23 and 2li of the respective flaps are adapted to be folded inwardly against the inner surfaces of the side and end walls of the box and are secured in position thereto by glue or the like.
The outer cover i8 is adapted to contain printed matter advertising the contents of the box or other suitable advertising matter, and when desired, as for instance, when a customer has purchased the contents of the box, the outer cover it may be removed by tearing the same along the perforated edges 25 thereby exposing the inner or ornamental cover, thereby removing the advertising matter and exposing the attractive ornamental cover, thereby making the box suitable as a gift box.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of use of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim isl. A box of the class described formed of a plurality of walls, said box having an open portion, an inner :dexible covering secured to the outer surfaces of the box, an outer flexible cover for the exposed surfaces of the inner cover and free therefrom and means for securing the marginal edges of said outer cover to the inner surfaces of the box, .said secured edges of the outer cover being separable from the remaining portion of the cover.
2. A box of the class described formed of a. plurality of walls, said box having an open portion, an inner ornamental cover secured to the outer surfaces of said Walls, an outer service cover positioned over the outer surface of said inner cover and extensions on the edges of said outer cover adapted to be folded inwardly and secured to the inner surfaces of said walls adjacent the open portion and lines of separation connecting said extensions to said outer cover, said outer cover being adapted for removal along said lines of separation.
