Description

H O. WARNER. 'O001er for Butter-Workers.
No. 216,635. Patefited June 17,1879.
itmssns:
ATTORNEY.
N. F'EI'ERSv PHOTO-UTHOBRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANNAH G. WARNER, OF WOODBURY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT I N COOLERS FOR BUTTER-WORKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No: 216,635, dated J une 17, 1879 application filed April 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANNAH G. WARNER, of Woodbury,in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coolers for Butter- Workers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the cooler and refrigerator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the tops or caps thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of an ice-box having a concave pan, on which the butter-bowl is sustained while the butter is being worked, so as to keep the same cold, and a surrounding gutter, in which the buttermilk or water is poured during the operation of working the butter, and from which it may be directed away.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an ice-box, and B represents a tray, which sustains the box A, and is mounted on legs 0.
From the upper end of the boxA is suspended a concave or dishing pan, D, whose edges are flanged so as to overhang the top edges of the box, and thus firmly hold the pan in position, said" pan being preferably formed of struck-up metal.
The sides of the tray rise above the bottom of the box A, and form around the same a gutter, B, with which the box communicates by means of a pipe or opening, a, and which is provided with an outlet-pipe or opening, I).
The concavity of the pan D corresponds to that of the butter-bowl E, whereby the former will receive the latter and keep it in place, and 1permit the proper manipulations of the bow The operation is as follows: The box A is properly supplied with ice, and thus the pan D is cooled. The bowl E receives the bu ter, and, being in contact with the pan D, is likewise cooled, whereby the butter will be kept cool while being worked-an ad vantage appreciated by those skilled'in the art to which my invention appertains. The bowl is occasionally tilted, so as to pour the expressed buttermilk and water into the gutter B of the tray B, the sides whereof prevent splashing. The melted ice flows into said gutter through the pipe or opening a, and the fluids in the gutter are directed through the pipe or opening b to a place of collection or discharge.
When the work is accomplished, the butter may remain in the bowl or be placed in the cold pan D, and a reticulated top or cap, F, employed to surmount the same, in order to protect the butter and permit access of air thereto, or, if thebutter is removed, other articles may be deposited on the pan in order to be refrigerated, in which case said top or cap F, or a close top or cap, F, may be supported on theice-box for covering said articles.
If desired, the butter may be worked directly in the pan; but the bowl is more conveniently employed for said purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The ice-box A, provided with the surrounding gutter B and outlet at, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The ice-box A, having the pan D, and provided with a surrounding gutter, B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HANNAH O. WARNER.
