J. F. ALLEN. Cooking Stoves.
No. 216,591. Patented June 17, .1879

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. ALLEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,591, dated June 17, 1879; application filed November 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. ALLEN, of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in (looking-Stoves, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is longitudinal section of a stove with my improvement attached, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple plan of producing the necessary heat in a cooking-stove by the application of an oil, spirit, or petroleum lamp or gas burner, whenever it is not desired to make a coal fire in the stove--as, for example, when only little heat is required to cook withand when it is desirable to extinguish the fire quickly, as in warm weather.
In the drawings, A represents a cooking stove, which may be of any known construction and internal arrangement as regards the lines. B is the fire-door, H the fire-place, and G the ash-pi t and draft-door.
At or near the upper end of the fire-place H, where the flues begin, I arrange a dia phragm, D, which may be made of sheet-iron loosely fittifi g into this part of the fire-place, so as to shut the same ofi' from the other parts of the stove. This diaphragm D is provided with holes J, one under each hole in the top plate of the stove, and which may be closed by a suitable cover, if only one should be required. Into these holes J caps E are fitted,
having suitable projections n to rest upon the diaphragm D to support the same. The lower part of this cap is arranged to receive a suitable lamp, F, and is provided with a number of openings, S, to allow the air to pass into the same above the lamp F to feed the flame. At the top of the cap the usual longitudinal opening for the flame is made.
This arrangement of a petroleum lamp or burner can readily be fitted to any stove or range, whenever only little fire is required for a short time, as in the summer, and is quite as easily removed whenever a larger or coal fire is required. I
When the lamp is lighted the draft of air through the stove, which is admitted and can easily be regulated by the doors B and G, must pass nearly all through the openings S to the flame, increasing the density of the same, and at the same time carrying all smell and smoke usually produced by the burning of petroleum into the smoke-pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a cooking stove or range, the diaphragm D and lamp or burner, F, fitted to a cap, E, provided with projections n and openings B, said diaphragm D fitting into or upon the fire-place of the stove or range, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
JOHN F. ALLEN. Witnesses:
