Description
May 9, 1939. N v. ANDERssoN 2,157,104
' Y BEAM Filed Dec. l, 1957 (1. .ATTORNEYS Patented May 9, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application December 1, 1937, Serial No. 177,474 In Sweden December 9, 1936 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a beam particularly adapted to support building constructions having projections and the like provided with water-draining p-lates or rain-p-lates attached to the building construction and, at least in part, covered by a coating mass, for example asphalt, provided thereon. Rain plates constructed in this manner have the drawback of rather soon getting loose from the coating mass and the construction respectively on account of the different coeflicients of expansion of the metallic plates and of the coating mass. Water penetrates into the cracks, which to begin with are very small and form in the coating mass on account of the stresses in the materials, which by the action of frost furthers the destruction. After a few years building constructions arranged in this way have been destroyed so that tho-rough repairing has to be done.
The present invention relates to a beam of the kind provided with one or more flanges on one side of the web and with one single flange on the other side and through the use of which the above mentioned drawback is eliminated. The beam according to the invention is characterized substantially thereby that the lastmentioned ange is provided at the upper portion of the web and forms an angle to the web, which is less than 90.
The beam is also characterized by a shoulder provided between the upper surface of the beam and the flange.
The accompanying drawing, by way of example, illustrates a vertical section thro-ugh a balcony, in which a beam according to the invention is used.
2 indicates a beam made according to the invention by rolling or in some other suitable way. In the present case it is a U-bearn that has been provided with a longitudinally extending flange 3, forming an angle to the web of less than 90. In the outer lower portion of the flange there is preferably provided a nose 4 for facilitating the drainage of water. 4a indicates a shoulder between the upper surface of the beam and the flange 3, which prevents rain water from penetrating into the construction. In the figure, 5 indicatesI a vault of concrete, 6 a beam provided therein and 1 an armouring iron. 8 is an u right for the balcony parapet. The concrete is asphalted in the usual manner the asphalt coating 9 being bevelled on to the flange 3. For the rest, the asphalt is, of course, applied in the usual manner with its edge raised against the wall of the house and at the parapet there is preferably provided a welt-like elevation from the raised edge some way outwards so that the water is prevented from owing down on to the flange 3 close to the wall, said flange serving as a rain-board.
Of course, the invention is not restricted to the U-section shown on the drawing but the flange may be provided on other sections suitable for the building construction concerned.
Neither is the scope of use, of course, restricted to balconies but the beams may replace all rain-plates and similar projections of stone material or wood occurring in house buildings.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a floor, a beam for supporting the outer edge of said door, said beam having at least one flange on one side of the Web extending under said floor and a single ange on the opposite side and upper portion of said web extending from under the edge of said floor, said single flange forming an angle to the web of less than 90 and serving as a rain-board.
2. In combination with a oor, a beam for supporting the outer edge of said oor, said beam having at least one flange on one side of the web extending under said oor and a single flange on the opposite side and upper portion of said web extending from under the edge of said floor, said single flange forming an angle to the web of less than 90 and serving asI a rain-board, a shoulder being provided between the upper surface of the beam and the said single ange.
3. In combination with a floor, a beam for supporting the outer edge of said floor, said beam having at least one ange on one side of the web eX- tending under said floor and a single flange on the opposite side and upper portion of said web extending from under the edge of said floor, said single iange forming an angle to the web of less than 90 and serving as a rain-board, a water draining nose being provided in the outer lower portion of the said single ange.
NILS VIKTOR ANDERSSON.
