Description

C. W. HOBBS. Y
Tent.
Patented May 20, 1879.
UNITED STATIIs :PATENTl IT'FICE.
CHARLES W. HOBBS, OF UNITED STATES ARMY.
IM PROVEM ENT IN TENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 215,610, dated May 20, 1879; application filed February 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HoBBs, of the United States Army, temporarily residing at Plattsburg Barracks, in the county of Clin ton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tents, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention relates to a means for using a stove in a tent for heating or cooking purposes. l
Heretofore, when it has been necessary to use a stove in a tent, a hole has been ripped in the canvas, and rude devices for supporting the stove-pipe resorted to. The poles have served merely to support the tent.
The object of my invention is to combine in the tent-poles, with their present use of supporting the tent, the further requisite of a stove-pipe and chimney.
The invention consists of a hollow tent-pole projecting for a few inches through an inverted V-shaped ridge-piece, and also through openings in the canvas ofthe tent and fly. A cowl or hood, with collar to cover the opening in the canvas from the weather, andan aperture and movable stove attachment at the lower Y part of the hollow upright.
In the accompanying' drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is also a perspective of the same packed and strapped for transportation.
A is an upright hollow pole of metal, passing for a few inches through an opening7 F,
in the inverted V-shaped ridge-piece B, and held in position by the supports G, which also keep the ridge from spreading. D is a cowl or hood and collar, which slides over the projecting end of A after the tent and tly have been put in position. E is a device for connecting a stove with A, and detachably attached to A.
The upright C is of wood. lt is rounded at the top to t the curvature of the ridge; but otherwise does not differ essentially from those heretofore in use. It has an iron pin fixed iu the upper end, which passesv through a hole in the ridge and in the canvas of the tent and ily.
The device is used as follows: Holes having been cut in the tent and fly in such position and of such size as to escape contact by about onefourth of an inch with the projecting end of A, and worked with thread around a ring of wire, the poles are connected and properly placed in the tent,.the cowl or hood put on, and the tent raised and pitched in theA usual manner. The stove attachment is thus slid into its place, when any suitable stove may be connected.
What I claim is- In a tent, the hollow metal pole provided with the cowl or hood D and the removable part E, in combination with an inverted V-shaped ridge-piece, B, substantially as specified.
CHARLES W. HOBBS.
