Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. H. GRAY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,560, dated September 21, 1858.
To all 11i/0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, S. H. GRAY, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a vertical central section of the upper part of a pump, showing my improvement fa, fr, Fig. 3, indicates the plane of section. Fig. Q, is an external view of dit-to. Fig. 3, .is a horizontal section of ditto taken in the line y, y, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding Jarts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improven'lent in the ordinary hand reciprocating pumps, and consists in a novel means employed for adjusting the. handle relatively with the spout as hereinafter shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the upper part of a pump cylinder, which has a 'iT-shaped flange a., on its upper end, as shown clearly in Fig. l.
B, is an upright or stand in the upper part of which the fulcrum pin of the handle is plac-ed, as shown at Z), Fig. l. The lower end of this upright at its inner side is of hook form and lits over the inner side of the flange c., as shown at ax, and a screw bolt c, passes through the lower part of the upright, said bolt having a curved or hooliformed head (Z, which fits over the outer part of the flange a. The .inner end of the bolt has a nut e, on it which when screwed tightly up secures the upright or stand to the top of the cylinder A. This will be fully understood by referring to Fig. l.
C, is the lid or cover of the cylinder which is slotted at its center to allow the piston rod to pass through. This lid is provided with a flange f, which laps over or lits on the top of the flange a, and two lugs or ears g, g, which project from the cover C, fit under lips 7L, It, one at each side of the upright or stand B. By this arrangement therefore it will be seen that the upright or stand B, when secured to the cylinder secures the lid or cover C, to the cylinder. It will also be seen that the upright or stand B, may be moved around on the top of the cylinder and be secured at any desired spot. The bolt o, being loosened when the upright or stand is to be adjusted, and the nut e, on the bolt screwed up when the upright or stand is to be secured in the desired position. This plan for admitting of the adjustment of the handle relatively with the spout is far simpler than any that I have seen.` The usual way is to have the upper part of the cylinder rotate. This plan is attended with considerable difficulty, .it adds materially to the cost of construction. In some cases the handle is secured to a stationary stand and the spout is allowed to rotate. This plan however is equally as complex as the other.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. Having the upright or stand B, of the pump handle provided with a claw or hook a* at one side of its lower end, and having a bolt C, pass through the lower part of the upright or stand; the bolt being provided with a curved or hook-formed head (l, the above parts being used in connection with liange a, on the upper end of the pump cylinder, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. I further claim .in connection with the upright or stand B, the cover C, arranged as shown, so that it may be secured to the cylinder A, by the upright or stand as shown and described.
SYLVESTER H. GRAY.
