4 Claims. (01. 3347) This invention relates to gun sights, and pardiameter of the hood l0, and an upper half I! ticularly to the type of front sight in which any having an exterior diameter substantially equal one of a number of readily interchangeable retito the exterior diameter of the hood l0. At the cules may be inserted and properly held in a junction of the parts I6 and I1 manipulative ears tubular supportlng and shielding member. l8 may be placed, the lower surface IQ of said More specifically, the invention contemplates ears resting upon the end walls of the slot [4 a novel construction of reticule and means assoand temporarily locating the reticule in substanciated with the hood cooperating with the novel tially correct position when it is first dropped into reticule for accurately locating and securely holdthe slot l4. Projecting upwardly from the bot- 10 ing the reticule, while permitting its ready retom of the reticule ring is a sighting element moval and replacement when desired. In apof any desired configuration. It will be underpliances of this character correct sighting restood that the sight surface which has been q re h th rch e l i ule be shown in the drawing is illustrative only, and that t t t y positioned in the h and he p r p ry the use of a set of interchangeable reticules l5 0 e hood be closed against the a on of comprising a number of differing sight surfaces light y devices o this p usually of is contemplated. The reticule securing means is rathgr complllex construbctionf, have; beer} proas follows; pose as We as a num er 0 slmp e app lances Within the ring |8|1 of the reticule is formed in which no means is provided for insuring that a, groove 2 which in section is r ferably v 20 the reticule is P Qperly seated therfafore shaped although other sections may be used when Fable eStab1 1shmg the correct slght The special circumstances render them desirable. present lnventlon contemplates the accurate seat- The threading f the shank of the reticule h01d mg of the retlcule and the closlng of the reticule mg member termmates at Such a point as 22, slot against adrsljsslon of hght by means of viding an unthreaded end section 23. Said tubuextraordmarxsmfphclty and effectlveness' lar end section 23 terminates in a configuration 25 I? w i f ht 1 corresponding to the configuration of the groove a a 1s f a g, aslg me mg one 2|. As illustrated this configuration is that of a m 0 th ht V. There is thus provided a pointed ring 24 of 3 an e i Ion o t i fi s the same configuration and diameter as the Se i' gg i i ii 2 :i groove 2| in the reticule. Preferably the slot I4 is somewhat the reticule to p wider than the reticule, to facilitate ready inser- It will be understood that the embodiment of tion and removal of the reticule. As illustrated the invention illustrated and described is typical in Figs. 3 and 4, the reticule consists essentially and representative only, the 1nvention being susof a ring comprising a lower half iii of an exceptible to many modifications, all falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A reticule for a firearms sight comprising a ring having two portions of differing exterior diameters, and manipulative means associated with said ring, there being a continuous circular groove in said ring adapted for engagement by a reticule retaining member.
2. In a firearms sight, in combination, a cylindrical hood having therein a semi-cylindrical transverse slot adapted to receive and support a reticule, a reticule adapted for insertion in said slot, said reticule comprising a ring having an annular groove in one face thereof, and reticule retaining means adjustably supported in said hood comprising an annular projection adapted to enter the groove in said reticule when said reticule is in operative position within said slot, thereby positioning and retaining said reticule in said hood.
3. In a firearms sight, in combination, a cylindrical hood having therein a semi-cylindrical transverse slot adapted to receive and support a reticule, a reticule adapted for insertion in said slot, means for retaining said reticule in operating position within said slot comprising a continuous circular groove in one face of said reticule, and a tubular member threaded into said hood and CRAWFORD C.
