DOUBLE POINT IGNITION SET Filed Oct. 21, 1937 l I J4 Q/ESS Z regggg ATTORNEYS Patented Feb. 14, 1939 2,147,198
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOUBLE POINT IGNITION SET Jesse T. Greene, Mllledgeville, Ga", assignor of one-half to Carl B. Massey, Milledgeville, Ga.
Application October 21, 1937, Serial No. 170,291 3 Claims. (Cl. 200-30) This invention relates to breaker point assempivot pin l5 which also extends through a conbly for internal combustion engine distributors tact mounting IS on which are secured relaand has for the primary object the provision of tively spaced contacts I! which cooperate with dual or double points and mountings therefor the contacts 8 in making and breaking the 5 which will provide better engine performance electric circuit of the distributor. A compound g with less consumption of fuel and will possess curved spring i8 bears against the mounting i6 longer life. and the contact arm I l. The spring will permit With these and other objects in view, this inthe mounting it to have a limited pivotal movevention consists in certain novel features of conment on the pivot pin l5 so that the contacts I1 struction, combination and arrangement of parts adjust themselves to the contacts 8. 10 to be hereinafter more fully described and In lieu of the mounting 3 the contacts 8 may claimed. be secured on a substantially U-shaped mounting For a complete understanding of myinvention, IS, the latter having slots 20 and an opening 2| reference is to be had to the following descripfor receiving stud bolts of a distributor housing tion and accompanying drawing, in which whereby the mounting l9 may be easily adjusted. 15
Figure l is a plan view, partly in section, and One end of the mounting l9 has an upstanding showing the dual or double points and mountings flange on which the contacts 8 are mounted. therefor, constructed in accordance with my in- The mounting l9 being adjustable on the housvention. ing of the distributor permits the contacts 8 to Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line be adjusted relative to the contacts 11. 0 2-2 of Figure l. The use of dual or double points has a distinct Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showadvantage over a. single point in a distributor in ing the dual contacts and the mountings therefor. that when the single point becomes burned a very Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating the weak current will be caused to pass through the contact arm. points and consequently to the plugs, thereby 25 Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating the causing ineflicient operation of the engine, exmounting for the pair of relatively fixed contacts. cessive gas consumption and, in some instances, Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating the will cause the engine to become inoperative. mounting for the pair of movable contacts. With the use of the double point the current is ure 7 S a Pe spective view illustrating a divided between the two pairs of points thereby 30 modified form of mounting for the relatively fixed decreasing the current through each pair of contacts. points which in turn reduces the possibility of Referring in detail to the drawing, the nuburning of the points. In some instances small meral I indicates a fragmentary portion of an foreign substances may come between the points internal combustion engine distributor wherein causing them to hold open and should this occur 35 the breaker arm cam is indicated by the charwith the double point as heretofore described in acter 2. Suitably secured in the distributor i this application the spring and pivot action will is a mounting 3 n l in n ularly r la ed porallow the double points to operate without intertions 4 and 5, the portion 5 being secured on ruption.
the distributor I by stud bolts 8. The portion 4 w t is m n d i 40 has screw threaded openings to receive screw An interrupter for an ignition circuit, threaded E carrying bolts the 60mm prising a spaced parallel pair of like terminal thereof being indicated by the character The contact members, an intermittently operable inconmcts 8 may be adiu-sted on the mounting 3 terrupter arm in cooperative relation to said nd are held in y their adjusted 190511510118 terminal contact members, a rockable contact 45 y s t bolts 9 t r aded in Open n s l9 0! th mounting on said arm, resilient means for yieldm untlns 3 and tu n d against the ontact arryably holding said mounting in a neutral position,
8 bolts and a spaced pair of like contact members located A contact armll is pivotally mounted on the on said mounting respectively at opposite sides distributor and carries a button l2 which rides of the pivotal axis thereof whereby to have a 50 the cam 2 under the influence of a spring ii, the compensating engagement with said first menlatter also acting as an electrical conductor betioned terminal contact members. tween the distributor housing and the contacts 2. An interrupter for an ignition circuit, comcarried by the contact arm H. Spaced ears H prising a spaced parallel pair of like terminal are formed on the contact arm II and receive a contact members, means for individually adjust- 55 ing said contact members longitudinally, an intermittently operable interrupter arm in cooperative relation to said contact members, a rockable mounting pivotally attached intermediate its ends to said interrupter arm, a compound curved spring element interposed between said mounting and said interrupter arm for holding the mounting in a normally neutral position, and a spaced pair of contact members located on said mounting respectively on opposite sides of the pivotal axis thereof whereby to have a compensating engagement with said first mentioned terminal contact members.
3. In an interrupter device oi the character described, a supporting body,'a dual point circuit terminal comprising a spaced pair of contact members of like character and capacity, an intermittently operable interrupter arm pivotally mounted and normally yieldably urged towards said terminal contact members, anda dual point opposed circuit terminal carried by said interrupter arm and comprising a rockable mounting having an off-set pivotal attachment intermediate its ends to said interrupter arm with interposed compound curved spring element yieldably holding the mounting in a. normally neutral position, and a pair of contact members of like character and capacity as first mentioned terminal contact members and located on said rockable mounting respectively on opposite sides of the pivotal axis thereof whereby to engage said first mentioned terminal contact members with equalizing effect.
