Feb. 14, 1939. o R 2,147,086
DISPLAY PACKAGE AND STAND Filed June 5, 1936 Patented Feb. 14, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 15 Claims.
This invention relates to display packages and stands adapted to hold assembled and to display for sale, merchandise put up in packages or containers of the same dimensions.
The main object of the invention is to provide 5 a display rack formed from a single sheet of metal, a packagingdevice to receive and hold detachably a predetermined number of equally dimensioned articles, which may be containers or receptacles for various forms of merchandise.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rack of the character described which can be shipped and packed in flat form, and which can be shaped manually to stand self supported on 15 any substantially horizontal support.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent asthe detailed description thereof proceeds.
In the drawing:
20 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of the completely assembled display package;
Figure 2 is an elevation of the display package shown in Figure 1, with part of the merchandise removed therefrom, and themain body of the display stand extended in condition for shipping;
Figure 31s a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;' r
Figure 4 is a broken vertical section on the line 30 4-4 of Figure 2;
' Figure 5 is an elevation of a modified form of the invention; and V Figure 6 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken on the line 66 of Figure 5.
As shown in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, the invention comprises a sheet of metal designated gen erally by the reference numeral 1. The sheet 1 is stamped to form a pair ofparallel flanges 8 and 9' substantially at right angles to sheet 1, and 40 spaced apart at a distance equal to the lengths of the packages or containers P. The flanges 8 and 9 are bent toward each other to form retaining members l and H substantially parallel to the face of sheet I and at a distance therefrom sub- 45 stantially equal to or slightly greater than the thickness or depth of the packages P.
A stop l2 for the packages P is formed by indenting the sheet 1 near one end of and between the flanges 8 and 9 and members l0 and l l and 50 a second stop is formed as a shelf l3 stamped fromsheet 1 betweensaid flanges and at a distance from the other ends of the members 1.0 and H slightly less than thewidth of the packages P.
The flanges 8 and 9 preferably project slightly 55 belowthe ends of the members [0 and H, but are spaced from the shelf l3 suiiiciently to permit a person to grip the opposite ends of a package for the purpose of removing it from the flanges and retaining members.
Below the stops l3 the sheet I is provided with a series of slots l4 extending along a line l substantially at right angles to the flanges 8 and 9. These slots I4 weaken the sheet 1 along the line l5, and enable anyone to bend the lower portion iii of the sheet 1 relative to the portion IT thereof to form a seat for holding the portion I! in any desired display, as shown in Figure 1.
Obviously, the seat l6 may be used to hold the display portion I! with the packages in horizontal positions by resting the edges of the portions l6 and I! on a horizontal surface.
In this form of the'invention, each pair of the flanges 8 and 9, and members l0 and H are stamped from the sheet I, so as to form a pair of slots I B'and l9 on opposite sides of a bridge 2 which serves to support the packages P in sliding contact with the retaining members I9 and H. Obviously, the display stand may include any desired number of pairs of flanges and retaining members. In the form shown in Figures 5 and 6, the display stand is formed from a blank 2|, originally shaped as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 5. The flange 22 and retaining member 23 are bent from a part 24 of the blank projecting originally from one edge of sheet 2|. The cooperating flange 25 and retaining member 26 are stamped out from the blank to form one half of the slot 21; the other half of the slot being formed by stamping out and bending the blank to form the flange 28 and retaining member 29. Similarly, the flange 30 and member 3| are stamped from said blank to form the slot 32. The method of stamping out the cooperating pairs of flanges and retaining members in this form of the invention is clearly shown in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing.
In the second form of the invention, stops l2 are formed by indenting the sheet 2| and are located with respect to the cooperating pairs of flanges in the same position as are the stops I2 5 of the. form shown in Figures 1 and 2. Stops I 3 are also located below the lower ends of the cooperating flanges and retaining members in positions corresponding to the positions of the stops l3 in Figures 1 and 2. A series .of slots I4 is formed in a line extending transversely of the sheet 2| to form a seat l6 for the display rack, in the same manner as illustrated for the preferred form of the invention in Figure 4.
It is intended that the display stand shall have 557 the guideways formed by the flanges and retain ing members, filled with packages of the merchandise, prior to shipping the stands thus packed, to their destination. In this form, the seat parts of the sheets of metal shall be alined with the main body part, to be bent by the user at any desired angle to the main body part in order to position the filled display stand in any desired position.
It is to be understood thatthe invention is not to be considered as limited to the specific construction and arrangement described herein, since it is evident that many changes may be madewithout departing from the scope of the inven-- tion as defined by the claims appended'hereto.
