Description
E. S. BYBEE Feb. 14, 1939.
AUTOMOBILE HEADLIGHT Filed Dec. 2, 1937 Patented Feb. 14, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a vehicle lamp, the general object of the invention being to so construct and arrange the parts thereof that glare is eliminated so operators of approaching vehicles will not be blinded from the light from the lamp.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying l0 drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts 13 throughout the several views, and in which:
body of the lamp, which may be made in a suitable manner, but in carrying out the invention a well or depending tubular part 2 is formed on the bottom of the body. A cap 3, holding the lens 4,
closes the front of the body and an inner reflector shell 5 is supported in the body. The inner end of this shell is rounded, as shown, and
the lower part of the shell, at the rear thereof, is
formed with a depending part 6, which extends into the well 2. A lamp socket 1 passes through the bottom of the part 6 and a small substantially cup shaped reflector B is located in the part 6 and has a hole in. its lower end for receiving the upper end of the socket. A lamp bulb 9 is placed in the socket, and as shown, the bulb is wholly contained in the reflector 8, the upper end of which is flush with the lower part of the shell. A reflector i0 is held in the rear end of the shell with its front end sloping downwardly and rearwardly,
so that the reflector reflects the light from the bulb downwardly and outwardly through the lens.
As will be understood, by having the bulb entirely hidden from view by one looking into the lamp, there are no blinding rays, such as the spot of light made by the bulb and all the light shaped reflector in said extension for directing is reflected, first upwardly by the small reflector and then outwardly by the large reflector. This eliminates blinding of operators of other vehicles approaching the vehicle equipped with the invention. The same amount of light is produced, as in other lamps, but it is a soft light which does not produce a blindness or affect the visibility of a person facing. directly towards the light itself.
In lieu of using the two reflectors the entire interior of the inner shell can be treated with 10 proper materials to produce one reflector, giving special treatment to the concave portions to 'produce the greatest refiectory power.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the 15 invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended 20 claim.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A lamp of the class described comprising a hollow horizontally extending body open at its front end, a lens at the front end of said body, a well carried by the under portion of said body adiacent the rear end thereof, said well depending from the body and having its upper end opening into the body, a cylindrical shell extending lon- Q0 gitudinally in said body and having a hemispherical rear end and a depending cup-shaped extension at its inner end fitting within said well, a socket in said well having its upper end exposed through the bottom of said extension, a cuplight upwardly, a bulb in said extension spaced downwardly from the upper end thereof, and a hemispherical reflector against the front face of the hemispherical rear end of said shell extending upwardly from the rear end portion of the cup-shaped reflector at a forward incline to overhang the cup-shaped reflector and project light rays forwardly through-the lens at a downward incline.
