This invention relates to fasteners.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved fastener which is particularly adapted for use in securing gowns such as those used by professional people in position on the body of a wearer.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a novel means for retaining the gown of a beauty operator in position about the neck of the wearer.
Other objects and the advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have shown my invention as embodied in a fastener which is indicated generally at H]. As 50 shown the fastener includes a base member H comprising a body having an upstanding end 12 thereon. This end is provided with slots or notches l3 which define an upstanding tongue M. The other end of the body is bent upwardly then parallel to the body as at I5 to provide a catch portion 16 which has rounded edges I 6' and whichv includes a downwardly opening groove IT.
A securing member has a body which is indicated generally at l8 and which includes a lower portion l9 having a pointed needle end 20 which 5 engages in the groove portion IT. This portion l9 includes an upwardly extending portion 2| and this upwardly extending portion includes a slot 2| which is received in the slots 13 on the end 12 as previously described. The slots l3 and 2| provide a wabbly hinge so that a slight turning and tilting of the member I8 is provided for. The portion 2| is connected to aportion 22 which extends parallel to the portion l9 and thence is bent upwardly as at 23 and the upper end includes an overhanging portion 24 best shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Mounted on the portion 23 I show a clamping member 25 which is preferably held in place by a rivet or other pivot means 25a. The clamping member includes a bent over finger engaging portion 25 at its free end and includes a pair of spurs 21 and 28 on its lower edge. The free end of the spur 27 is nearer the axis of the pivot 25a than is the free end of the spur 28.
In use when the clamping member is intended to serve to hold a gown in place the parts are shown as arranged in Fig. 5 and one part of the gown 30 is pierced by the point 29 while the parts of the fastener are in the position shown in Fig. 5. The parts are then turned to-the position shown in Fig. 4 with the cloth 30 held as shown in Fig. 8. The gown is then draped about the wearer and another portion of the gown as indicated at 30' in the drawing is inserted beneath the clamping member when the latter is raised as shown in Fig. 6. The clamping member is then swung upwardly about its pivot thus causing the cloth to be drawn or pulled inwardly until the clamping member frees the cloth whereupon the cloth is drawn by the fingers over the portion I9 so that the clamping membercan be moved to the position shown in Figs. '7 and 8 with the gown held in place upon the wearer.
From the description it will be apparent that the fastener engages the gown and is not removed each time the gown is removed from the wearer since in the latter operation only the clamping member is released and the securing needle member 28 is left undisturbed.
In Figs. 10 to 13 inclusive I have shown a modification of my invention wherein similar parts are indicated by similarly primed reference characters. In the modification the fastener includes a base member ll comprising a body having an 55 upstanding end I2 thereon. This end I2 is provided with an inwardly directed portion I2a. The other end of the body is bent upwardly then parallel to the body as at I5 to provide a catch portion I6 which has rounded edges Hid.
A securing member has a body which is indicated generally at I8 and includes a lower portion I9 having a pointed needle end 20 which engages the catch portion I6. The portion I9 is pivoted to the portion I2a by a rivet I8a'. The portion I9 includes an upwardly extending portion 2I. The portion 2I is connected to a portion 22' which extends parallel to the portion I9 and thence is bent upwardly as at 23 and the upper end includes an overhanging portion 24.
Mounted on the portion 23' I show a clamping member 24a which is preferably held in place by a rivet or other pivot means 25. The clamping member 2400' includes a bent over finger engaging portion 26 at its free end and includes a pair of spurs 21. and 28 on its lower edge. The free end of the spur 21' is nearer the axis of the pivot 25' than is the free end of the spur 28.
In Figs. 14 to 1'7 inclusive I show a further modification of my invention wherein the structure is similar to that shown in Figs. 10 and 12 and as shown includes a base member II" comprising a body having an upstanding end I2 thereon. This end I2 is provided with an inwardly directed portion I2a". The other end of the body is bent upwardly as at 35 then parallel to the body to provide a needle point 36.
A securing member has a body which is indicated generally at I8 and includes a lower portion I9 which terminates in an end portion I8b which includes a downwardly directed. recess in which the needle end 33 engages. The portion I9" is pivoted to the portion I2a" by a rivet I8a and the portion I 9" includes an upwardly extending portion 2|. The portion 2|" is connected to a portion 22" which extends parallel to the portion I9 thence is bent upwardly as at 23 and the upper end includes an overhanging portion 24".
Mounted on the portion 23" I show a clamping member 240/ which is preferably held in place by a rivet or other pivot means 25". The clamping member includes a bent over finger engaging portion 26" at its free end and includes a pair of spurs 21 and 28" on its lower edge. The free end of the spur 21" is nearer the axis of the pivot 25 than is the free end of the spur 28".
The use of the fastener described in the modifications is the same as that described in the principal embodiment.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a novel clasp which can be economically manufactured and which is highly efficient for the intended purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a fastener, a base member, a securing member pivotally mounted on said base member, said securing member having a pointed end portion and said base including a groove receiving said pointed end portion, said pointed end portion being adapted to engage a piece of material and a toothed clamping member pivoted on said scouring member and movable towards the securing member to bring the teeth into engagement with a piece of cloth.
2. In a fastener, abase member, said base member comprising a body having an upstanding end, said end having opposed notches defining a tongue, said body having a catch portion thereon extending over the body, said catch portion having a downwardly facing groove therein, a securing member including a body having a slot at one end receiving the tongue on said end whereby said securing member is shiftable and tiltable, said securing member including a cloth engaging needle point at one end, said needle point in normal position being disposed in said groove, said securing member body including an upwardly directed part, said upwardly directed part having a clamping member pivoted thereon, said clamping member having a plurality of spaced downwardly facing spurs thereon.
3. In a fastener, a base member, said base member comprising a body having an upstanding end, said end having opposed notches defining a tongue, said body having a catch portion thereon extending over the body and having curved edges, said catch portion having a downwardly facing groove therein, a securing member including a body having a slot at one end receiving the tongue on said end where-by said securing member is shiftable and tiltable, said securing member including a cloth engaging needle point at one end, said needle point in normal position being disposed in said groove, said securing member body including an upwardly directed part, said upwardly directed part having a clamping member pivotedthereon, means on said part to limit the upward movement of said clamping member, said clamping member having a pair of spaced downwardly facing spurs thereon, the distance from the axis of said pivot to the end of one of said spurs being less than the distance from the axis to the end of the other spur.
4. In a fastener, a base member, said base member comprising a body having a catch portion thereon at one end extending over the body, said catch portion having a downwardly facing groove therein, a securing member including a body shiftable on the other end of the base member body, said securing member including a cloth engaging needle point at one end, said needle point in normal position being disposed in said groove, a clamping member pivoted on said securing member, said clamping member having spaced downwardly facing spurs thereon disposed above said securing member body.
5. In a fastener, a base member, said base member comprising a body having an upstanding end, said end having opposed notches defining a tongue, said body having a catch portion thereon extending over the body, said catch portion having a downwardly facing groove therein, a securing member shiftably mounted on said base member, said seeming member including a cloth engaging needle point at one end, said needle point in normal position being disposed in said groove, said securing member body including an upwardly directed part, said upwardly directed part having a clamping member pivoted thereon, said clamping member having a downwardly facing spur thereon.
6. In a fastener, a base member, said base member comprising a body having a catchportion thereon at one end extending over the body, said catch portion having a downwardly facing groove therein, a securing member including a body pivoted on the other end of the base member body whereby said securing member is shiftable, said securing member including a cloth engaging needle point at one end, said needle point in normal position being disposed in said groove, said securing member body including an upwardly directed part, said upwardly directed part having a clamping member pivoted thereon, said clamping member having a downwardly facing spur.
7. In a fastener, a base member, said base member comprising a body having a catch portion thereon at one end extending over the body and having curved edges, said catch portion having a downwardly facing groove therein, a securing member including a body pivoted on the other end of the base member body whereby said securing member is shiftable, said securing member including a cloth engaging needle point at one end, said needle point in normal position being disposed in said groove, said securing member body including an upwardly directed part, said upwardly directed part having a clamping member pivoted thereon, means on said part to limit the upward movement of said clamping member, said clamping member having a pair of spaced downwardly facing spurs thereon, the distance from the axis of said pivot to the end of one of said spurs being less than the distance from the axis to the end of the other spur.
8. In a fastener, a base member comprising a body having a catch portion thereon extending over the body and having a needle point thereon, a securing member including a body shiftable on the other end of said base body, said securing member including a downwardly facing groove for receiving said needle point, said securing member body including an upwardly directed part, said upwardly directed part having a clamping member pivoted thereon, said clamping member having a downwardly facing spur thereon.
9. In a fastener, a base member comprising a body having a needle point thereon extending over the body, a securing member including a body pivoted on the other end of said base body whereby said securing member is shiftable and tiltable, said securing member including a downwardly facing groove for receiving said needle point, said securing member body including an upwardly directed part, said upwardly directed part having a clamping member pivoted thereon, means on said part to limit the upward movement of said clamping member, said clamping member having a pair of spaced downwardly facing spurs thereon, the distance from the axis of said pivot to the end of one of said spurs being less thon the distance from the axis to the end of the other spur.
