1 claim.
'I'he invention relates to a die stock and more especially to a ratchet acting die stock.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a stock of this character, wherein the thread cutting die can be supported for ratchet g action away from the stock thus permitting the cutting of threads upon lugs and in this fashion the stock is usable in close quarters through ratchet action thereof.
1,0' Another object of the invention is the provivsion of a stock of this character, which is simple in its construction,'thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, handy for use in close quarters;
strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the y2() preferred embodiment of the invention and Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line l 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
f Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing- Referring to the drawing in detail, the die stock is denoted generally at A, involving a collet or ring formed as a hollow head 5 having at one side a permanent face 6 while opposite this is a two-part removable 'covering plate, the parts thereof being indicated at 1, for closing a space 8 interiorly of the head. Rotatably tted with the ,collet or ring constituting'the head 5 within the space 8 therein is a toothed ratchet wheel 9 having a center opening I0 of circular shape and the wall of this opening is provided with channels or grooves II, being uniformly spaced from each other and extending entirely through the wheel 9 for a purpose presently described.
The head 5 at diametrically opposite points thereof has integrally formed therewith tubular socket extensions I2 in which are separably threaded stock handles I3, these being tubular in kind. y The ratchet wheel 9 is formed with a cupshaped die holder I4, the opening I0 in the wheel 559 being carried through the holder I4 at the center thereof. Within the space 8 and diametrically opposite the ratchet wheel 9 are the ratchet dogs I5, each being pivoted at I6 for ratchet action with the ratchet Wheel 9 and such dogs are acted upon by coiled tensioning springs 5 I'I seated therein and in the head 5 or the extensions I2 thereof so that these dogs under the tension of the springs will have positive engagement with the ratchet Wheel 9.
Associated with the ratchet dogs I5 and turn- 10 able on arbors I8 are eccentrics I9 provided with kicking pins 20 in the path of the dogs I5 so that when either or both of the said eccentrics I9 are turned either or both of the dogs I 5 can be moved out of action with the ratchet wheel 9. Each Il eccentric I 9 carries a hand grip 2I inherently resilient andprovided with a friction latching lug 22 engageable in a keeper seat 23 provided therefor in the head 5 and this latching lug 22 when engaging the keeper seat 23 holds the eccen- 20 tric to have the dog I5 common thereto out of action with the ratchet wheel 9 and through the use of the said dogs I5 in association with the ratchet wheel 9 enables double ratchet action of the stock. 25
supplementing the die holder I4 is an extension die holder 24 having a cylindrical stem or shank 25 formed with a reduced male coupling end 26, the latter externally being provided with ridges 21 accommodated Within the grooves or channels 30 II and in this manner the supplemental die holder 24 is attachable to the ratchet wheel 9, the male member 26 being received in the opening I0 centrally of said ratchet wheel 9 and this supplemental holder enables the use of the stock 35 in close places and particularly for the cutting Vof lugs projecting slightly from a piece of work forv the threading of vsuch lugs in the use of a thread cutting die.
'I'he parts I of the cover plate interfit with re- 40 taining lips 28 formed on the head 5 and at the outer end of these parts are provided abutment flanges 29 seated at 30 in the head 5, there being provided bolts or fasteners 3I securing the parts 'I in place and also functioning as the pivots I6 45 for the dogs I 5.
The stock in its construction as before set forth is very simple in its make-up, strong and compact, being handy for use in close work and is adaptable for the fitting 0f standard dies 50 therewith.
What is claimed is:
A stock of the kind described comprising a collet forming a hollow head having a permanent face at one side, a two-part removable cover plate at the other side of the head opposite the permanent face, retaining lips on the head for the two parts of Said 'cover plate, abutment anges on the two parts of said plate and interfitting the said head, a ratchet Wheel within the head and releasably held by said cover plate, a
spring-tensioned ratchet dog tting saidl head and coacting with the ratchet wheel, a second erable for rendering one or both of said dogs inactive with the Wheel, and an extension die holder having separable coupling connection with the ratchet wheel. Y
