This invention relates to an oil control valve regulated by the action of an electro-magnet which is energized or excited in response to a control instrumentality such as a room thermostat, a limit control or a pressure switch.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an oil control valve of this character which is simple and compact in its construction, reliable in its operation, easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and susceptible of ready installation. The valve is designed to provide a constant oil supply to a pot type burner on domestic heating installations, small process steam boilers, water heaters, and similar applications where a constant temperature must be maintained and where an electric circuit is available for control. It is of the high lre and low fire type.
In carrying out the present invention, the electric control -unit is mounted on top of the valve body, and is protected by e. tight fitting cover. When contact is made, either through a room thermostat, a limit control, or a pressure switch, the coil is energized which brings the armature forward. This armature in turn raises the sliding metering valve which allows the full capacity of the oil to pass to the burner. This is the high nre position. When de-energized, the armature swings away allowing the metering valve to drop to the low iire position. The control is ymade so that the high and low ilre can be adjusted to individual needs. The high fire can be adjusted from full capacity down to almost nothing.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination oi parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which: r

Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that in the embodiment of the invention there illustrated, a casing i is provided. Fuel is supplied to the casing i through an inlet 2 from a reservoir or other suitable source.A `Within the casing i there is a float controlled inlet valve 3 equipped with an automatic safety cut-off 4. 'I'his structure will not be described in detail as it per se ing and is connected in any suitable way with the burner (not shown). A iianged sleeve 1 is iitted in the upper end of the outlet passage 5 and held lo in position by friction or otherwise. This sleeve 'i provides a valve seat for a tubular metering valve B. The lower end oi' the valve is reduced as at 9 and the reduced portion 9 has a suitable number of metering slots I0 therein. in order that the outlet valve may be vented it is provided with an axial passage it extending down through its lower e'nd and communicating at its upper end with a lateral port or opening it which communicates with the interiorwoi the main 25 supply chamber above the level of the liquid therein. The cover it is provided with an opening through which the upper part oi the valve t entends. Associated with this opening is a short sleeve it, which is fixed in position and for this purpose may be a separate piece secured to the gg cover it and also to a bracket il' or, ii desired, may be formed as an integral part oi the bracket il. The bracket is, oi course, iirmly secured to l the cover M. A valve stem it is provided and has its lower portion fitted in and suitably secured gg to the valve 8 above its vent port it. The upwardly projecting portion of the stem it is threaded and has threaded thereon upper and lower nuts or abutments designated at it and it.
The nuts Iii and 2t may be provided with lock gg screws 2i and 22 to releasably secure them in any position at which they may be adjusted to the stem. By loosening the lock screws and turning the nuts in one direction or another, their position along the valve stem may be changed.
In the lowermost position of the valve which is desired when the burner is oi the high fire and low hre type, the nut 20 rests against the upper end oi the sleeve I8, the sleeve then serving as a Stop.
The upward movement oi' the valve is limited by a cross pin 23 which is connected to the body of the valve and engageable with a stop 2l provided on the cover.
The valve may be conveniently held against turning by means of a cross pin 25, the ends oi which project beyond the periphery of the valve and are a working t in vertical slots 2G provided in diametrically opposite portions oi the sleeve IS.
The vertical leg or portion il' of the bracket il has the frame plates 2l of the laminated core of an electro-magnet designated generally at E, secured thereto by means of screws 29. One leg of the core supports the electro-magnetic Winding 30. An armature 3i is pivotally connected as at 32 to extensions of the frame plates 2l at their upper corners. An operating lever designated generally at 33 has a downturned end 34 fastened to the outer side of the armature 3l. The lever extends over the electro-magnet and supporting bracket I1 and at its end remote from the magnet is provided with extensions 35 and 36 which have yokes 31 and 38 provided thereon. By having two yoked extensions the device is adapted to operate two outlet valves. In some instances, only one outlet valve is required and as they are identical only one is shown. In the construction illustrated, the yoke 38 embraces the stem I 8 in between the nuts or abutments I9 and 20. The parts are so proportional and arranged that when the magnet E is de-energized the weight of the lever 33 disengages its yoke 38 from the nut or abutment IS and allows the valve to drop down until the lower nut 20 engages the upper end of the guide I6. This is the low ilre position of the valve. When the magnet is energized the armature 3l is swung over to the position shown in Figure l, thereby rotating the lever 33 in a counterclockwise direction and causing its yoke 38 to engage the upper nut or abutment I9 and elevate the valve to its high iire position. The ex- A tent to which the lever is effective to elevate or open the valve is determined by the adjustment of the nut 2|. Thus, the high tire can be adjusted from high capacity down to almost nothing. The
low flame can also be adjusted by adjusting the lower nut 20.
The bracket I1 may be provided with a second vertically extending web 39 to support an insulating panel 40 on which binding posts 42 are provided to receive the power supply lines I3. The terminals of the winding 30 are connected to these binding posts by wires Il. With this construction both high and low iiame adjustments are had simply by adjusting two nuts or abutments on a single valve stem. Only a single lever is required and yet the electro-magnet exercises complete control over the device.
While I have shown and described one construction in which the invention may be advantageously embodied, it is to be understood that this construction has been selected merely for the purpose of example and illustration and that various changes inthe size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope oi' the subjoined claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. An oil control valve comprising a casing having an oil supply chamber provided with an outlet, a valve seat in said outlet, a metering valve having its lower end coacting with said valve seat to regulate iiow therepast, a cover for theV casing having an opening, a guide for the valve associated with the opening, said valve having a stem projecting above said guide, spaced abutments adjustably secured to the stem whereby the position of the abutments longitudinally oi the stem may be varied, means for releasably securing the abutments in adjusted position, an electro-magnet mounted on the cover and having a swingable armature, and an operating lever secured to the armature and having one end cooperable with one of the said abutments to raise the valve when the magnet is energized, the other abutment coacting with said guide to limit the closing of the valve when the magnet is deenergized.
2. Anoil control valve comprising a casing having an oil supply chamber provided with an outlet, a valve seat in said outlet, a metering valve having its lower end coacting with said valve seat to regulate flow therepast, a cover for the casing having an opening, a guide for the valve associated with the opening, said valve having a threaded stem projecting above said guide, a pair of nuts threaded on said stem, means for releasably securing the nuts in adjusted position, a bracket mounted on the cover, an electro-magnet comprising a core having frame plates fastened to the bracket, a winding on the core, an armature pivoted to the frame plates of the core, and a lever fixed to the armature and having a yoke embracing said stem between said nuts and cooperable with one of said nuts to elevate the valve when the magnet is energized, the other of said nuts coacting with the guide to limit the closing movement of the valve.
3. An oil control valve comprising a casing having an oil supply chamber provided with an outlet, a valve seat in said outlet, a metering valve having its lower end coacting with said valve seat to regulate flow therepast, a cover for the valve, said cover having an opening, said valve having a stem projecting through the opening, a nut threaded on the stem, means for releasably securing the nut in adjusted position, ay swingable lever cooperable with the nut to elevate the valve, means for swinging the lever upwardly, and means for limiting the lowering movement of the valve when the lever is allowed to swing downwardly, said lever being free to swing after the lowering movement of said valve has been limited, by said last named means.

An oil control valve comprising a casing having an oil supply chamber provided with an outlet, a valve for regulating iiow through the outlet, said valve having a stem, a pair of nuts threaded on the stem, an electro-magnet having a swingable amature and a single lever connected 'to said armature and cocperable with one of the nuts to effect opening of the valve when the electro-magnet is energized, and a stop engageable with the other nut to control the position of the valve when the electro-magnet is de-energized. 5. An oil control means comprising a casing having'an oil supply chamber provided with an outlet, a metering valve coacting with the outlet to regulate ilow therethrough, a cover for the valve having an opening, a guide for the valve, supported on the cover and associated with the opening, said valve having a stem projecting above the guide, an -electro-magnet mounted on saidk cover, a lever actuated by said magnet and cooperable with the stem to effect opening of the valve when the magnet is energized, and means adjustable on the stem and cooperable with said guide for limiting the closing movement of the valve.

An oil control valve comprising a casing` having an oil supply chamber provided with an outletfa valve for regulating ow through the outlet, said valve-having a stem, spaced abutments adjustably secured to the stem whereby lthe position of the abutments longitudinally of the stem may be varied, an electromagnet having a swingable armature, a. single lever secured to the armature and having one end cocperable with
