HAIR CURLER Filed Sept. 25, 1955 W EV//////I fifdemw ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 31, 1939 UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE HAIR CURLER Nathan L. Solomon, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application September 25, 1935, Serial No. 42,049
9 Claims. (01. 132-44) This invention relates to hair curlers of the type in which the hair is initially gripped between and subsequently coiled about complementary hair holding elements coacting with a swingable retaining member for non-rotatably sustaining the curler relative to the head of the user. Hitherto as far as I am aware relatively hard and nonyielding hair curlers of the type referred to, were utilized to process the hair during periods of slumber. During such use, the curler became a source of annoyance in that portions thereof would penetrate into the flesh, causing considerable discomfort and inconvenience. The present invention has for its object the provision of a hair curler of the flexible and yieldable type which will be free from the objection above referred to and is characterized by a relatively soft and resilient one piece structural embodiment which may be readily applied to the head of the user, which is durable in construction and which from the standpoint of manufacture may be produced at a relatively low cost.
My invention also includesthe provision of a unitary hair curler having a body provided with biased kerf to form complementary hair holding elements about which the hair to be processed is coiled, the body having an appropriate integrally connected socket adapted to reinovably sustain a terminal resilient stay of an attenuated elastic hair retaining member integrally and swingably extending from the body of the curler.
The invention is applicable generally to hair curlers which may widely vary in respect to their general construction but preferably embodies a simplified hair curler comprising a one piece resilient body and an integrally and swingably connected resilient hair retaining member. Such a hair curler is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:---
beingshcwn open and partly in section.
Fig. Bis a closed view of the curler illustrated in Fig. 1 and partly in section and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, however, illustrating a slightly modified construction.
The one-piece curler generally denoted iii cornprises a cylindrical body of relatively soft rubber provided with a biased or obliquely disposed kerf or cut it dividing the body into normally closed mutually contacting complementary hair holding elements ill and it to form integrally and hingedly connected components permitting component it to be manually swung away from the relatively flat face it of the companion element iii to constitute a gap in which a portion of the hair to be coiled is inserted.
having an enlarged resilient terminal or stay is defining an annular shoulder ii. The stay it is integral with retaining member i5 and both may be of the same resilient material out of which the body of the curler is formed, the body being provided with an axial bore it defining a socket or housing having an annular lip orflange it.
In operation, the hair to be curled, has its terminal part 2i first interposed between holding complements l2 and it after which manual pressure is removed from the swingable complement i2 and the latter automatically closes. Subsequently the hair is wound about the closed complements and the flexible retaining member it is first swung as to lie against the hair wound complements it and i3, and subsequently stretched to arrange the stay to overhang the socket end of the body. The fore part of the retaining member is now arcuately bent towards the socket to dispose stay it inline with bore it thereof. Stay id is then passed through the expandible annular flange it and into the bore ill and pursuant to such operation, flange Ell con tracts and interlocks with the annular shoulder ii of the stay to prevent the latter from accidentally disconnecting from the socket.
With the hair held between and wound about the complements, the retaining member i5 lies against the hair spirally wound about the body of.the curler and stay it is interlocked with the annular flange Ell. In an interlocked relation of the retaining member, the latter cooperates with the hair about the curler to prevent rotation of the latter, that is, precluding the hair wound about the complements to unwind.
To disconnect the stay it from its socket or housing, the intermediate curved portion 22 is manually grasped and moved outwardly, thus causing annular flange iii to expand, whereupon the tapered head or stay it may be passed by and be free of flange it. In this way the stay is removed from the socket. The retaining member then lifts from the hair about the complements and by its own resiliency swings to a normal open position to overhang the body of the curler.
In the form according to Fig. 3, annular resilient flange 22, instead of being at an extreme end of the body of the curler, is arranged within an intermediate part of bore it. In other aspects, the construction illustrated in Fig. 3 is identical to the form disclosed in connection with Fig. l.
By the present invention, a complete one-piece simplified hair curler is provided, characterized by a relatively soft resilient body including an integrally hinged flexible and resilient hair retaining member each susceptible to be deformed to conform to the irregularities of the head or the user to prevent harmful pressure thereon particularly during periods of sleep.
