This invention relates generally to shoe machines and more specifically to an improved machine adapted for use in attaching high heels to womens shoes with the aid of the heel attaching device covered by United States Letters Patent No. 2,004,979, granted to me on June 18, 1935, the predominant object of the invention being to provide a machine of this type which is of relatively simple construction and arrangement and is capable of performing its intended function in a highly efficient manner.
The heel attaching device covered by the United States patent referred to above comprises a hollow element in the form of a sleeve which is provided at one end with a flange and. at its opposite end with a plurality of teeth spaced circumferentially of said opposite end of the sleeve, said teeth being provided with inwardly curved faces in contact with which a drift is moved to spread the teeth outwardly. In applying the heel attaching device to a shoe a hole is drilled through the insole of the shoe and into the heel to be attached thereto and the heel attaching device is introduced into this hole. In its final heelsecuring position in the shoe the flange of the heel attaching device is countersunk in the insole of the shoe, and the teeth of the device are spread outwardly so that they bite into the material of the heel and in this manner secure the heel to the shoe.
The improved machine disclosed herein is of the dual type, including means for drilling a hole through the insole and in the heel of a shoe being operated upon, and means for inserting the heel attaching device in such hole and spreading the teeth of the heel attaching device to cause them to bite into the material of the heel surrounding the hole therein. In the use of the machine these operations are performed in a simple, convenient and expeditious manner so that speed of productionso necessary in the shoe making industry is maintained.

In the drawings, wherein is shown for the purpose of illustration, merely, one embodiment of the invention, A designates the improved machine generally. The machine A includes a suitably constructed supporting frame I having legs 2 provided with feet 2' which rest upon a floor or other support 3. If desired the machine may be 10 anchored in place with respect to the support by suitable fastening devices 4 which pass through the feet 2'. The supporting frame I is provided with a top wall I in which an opening 5 is formed, and secured by fastening elements 6' to the top 15 wall of the frame so that it covers the opening 5 is a top plate 6. As shown in Fig. 1 the top plate 6 is provided with upwardly extended portions 1 which are apart from each other in the direction of the width of the machine, each of said 20 portions 1 comprising a rectangular, vertical wall portion which is surmounted by a thicker horizontal top wall 1'.
Arranged above the top wall 1 of one of the upwardly extended portions 1 is a form 8 which is shaped and adapted to receive a shoe S being operated upon by the machine. The form 8 is provided with a pair of screwthreaded openings in which the screwthreaded upper end portions of vertically disposed bolts 9 are extended, said 30 bolts passing through openings formed in the top wall I of the associated upwardly extended portion I of the top plate 6 and being provided with heads at their lower ends which are adapted to contact with the lower face of the top wall of 35 said associated upwardly extended portion 1 as shown in Fig. 2. Surrounding the bolts 9 and interposed between the top face of the top wall of the upwardly extended portion 1 and the bottom face of the form 8, and with their opposite ends in contact with said faces, are coil springs Ill. The coil springs Ill urge the form 8 upwardly, such upward movement being limited by contact of the head of the bolts with the lower face of the top wall of the associated upwardly 45 extended portion 1.. The space within which the coil springs are located is enclosed within a shield II which is secured by fastening means to the form 8.
The form 8 has formed vertically therethrough 50 an opening l2 (Fig. 2) in which a drill I3 is arranged, said drill being supported for rotation in a vertical opening formed through the top wall of the associated upwardly extended portion 1. Supported in a horizontal position by opposed bearings I6 forming parts of the supporting'frame I of the machine is a shaft I! on whichis fixedly mounted a bevel gear I 8 that meshes with the bevel gear I4. The shaft I! also has mounted thereon a pulley I9 over which a power transmission belt operates, said belt operating also over a smaller pulley 2I which is fixed to the power shaft of a motor 22 that is suitably supported by the frame I of the machine.
The upwardly extended portion I with which theform 8 is associated is located at the left in Fig. 1, and associated with the right-hand upwardly extended portion I shown in that view, in a position above the top wall thereof, is a form 23 which is shaped and arranged as is the form 8. The form 23 is provided with bolts 24 and coil springs 25 which are arranged just as are the bolts 9 and coil springs I0 associated with the form 8. Also the form 23 has fixed thereto a shield 26 which is a counterpart 'of and performs the same function as the shield .II of the form 8. The form 23 is provided withan opening 21 formed vertically therethrough into which is extended a tubular guide 28, said guide being provided with a screwthreaded lower portion 28 of reduced diameter which is screwedin a screwthreaded opening formed in the top wall 'I'of the associated upwardly. extended portion 1. Because of this arrangement the guide 28 comprises a rigid upstanding portion of the associated upwardly extended portion I, and as shown in Fig. 3 the top .faceof .the' guide 28 is located in a lower plane than the'top face of the form 23 when said form is in its uppermost position to providea .cavity 29 in the upper portion of the form 23 the bottom wall of which is provided by the top face of the guide 28.
Supported for vertical movement in the opening through the tubular guide 28 is a drift 35 which is provided at its lower end with a head 3i, said drift, in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3, having its upper end extended a slight distance upwardly into the cavity 29. The head 3| of the drift 30 rides on the eccentric, peripheral face of a cam 32, and a coil spring 33 which contacts with the upper face of the head of the drift and the lower face of the top wall of the associated upwardly'extended portion 1, maintains said head of the driftin close contact with said eccentric peripheral face of the cam. The cam 32 is splined or keyed to a tubular element 34 which is supported by theshaft IT in embracing relation with respect thereto as shown in Fig. 1, said tubular element being provided with an annularflange 34 which bears against the adjacent bearing 15 of the frame of the ma 7 chine.
A coil spring 35 which surrounds the tubularelement 34.contacts atone of its endswith the flange 34' of said tubular element and at its opposite end with the cam 32, said coil spring being under compression so that it forces the flange of the tubular element in close contact with the adjacent bearing I6 to prevent rotation of the tubular element with the shaft Il and tends to move the cam 32 longitudinally of the tubular element 34 toward the pulley I9. The cam 32 is provided with a plurality of lugs 36 which, When the cam is moved toward the pulley I9 by the coil spring 35 as will be presently explained, are engaged by similar lugs 31 on said pulley I9 so as to clutch the cam to the pulley for rotation therewith.
The cam 32 is provided with a hub portion 38 which is shaped to provide an abutment 39 and an inclined face 48 which leads to said abutment as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Cooperatively associated with the hub portion 38 of the cam is a controlling arm M which is pivoted at 42 between spaced ears 43 formed on the supporting frame I of the machine, said arm 4| extending from its point of pivotal attachment at 42 outwardly beyond the front of the machine as shown in Fig. 3 where said arm is provided with a suitable hand grip 44. Adjacent to the hand grip 44 the arm extends through a guideway 45 formed as a part .of the frame I of the machine which guides the arm 4| for vertical movement, and attached to the forward portion of the arm and to the frame i of the machine is a coil spring 46 which tends to move the outer portion of the arm upwardly. The arm 4,I is provided with an extension 41 which includes a straight face 41a and an inclined side face 41b, the straight face 41a being adapted to contact with the abutment 39 of the hub portion of the cam and the inclined side face being adapted to contact with the inclined face 40 that leads to said abutment 39.
The supporting frame I of the machine is provided with a pair of upstanding tubular extensions 48in each of which a plunger 49 is arranged for vertical movement. Each plunger 49 is provided with a lower portion 49 of reduced diameter which passes through an opening formed in the top wall of the supporting frame of the machine, a shoulder 58 being present where the reduced lower portion of the plunger meets the larger upper portion thereof. Interposed between the shoulder 50 of each plunger and the bottom wall of the tubular extension 48 in which said plunger is arranged is a coil spring 5| which tends to move the associated plunger upwardly. Pivotally connected to the lower end of each plunger is a link 52 which, at its lower end is pivotally connected to an end portion of an arm 53, the opposite end of said arm 53 being pivotally connected at 54' to ears 54 formed on the frame I of the machine. Pivotally attached to each arm 53 is a link 55 which extends down- Wardly from said arm where its lower end por tion' is pivotally attached to a foot pedal 56. Each foot pedal is pivoted at 51 to ears 58 formed on the frame of the machine at the rear thereof and said pedal extends beyond the front of the machine Where it is provided with a foot piece 56'. Each foot pedal has attached to it a coil spring 59, which is connected also to the frame of the machine, and tends to move the outer portion of the foot pedal upwardly.
Each tubular extension 48 has formed in the wall thereof a slot 60 which is open at the top of the tubular extension and extends downwardly therefrom. Each plunger 49 has extended therefrom a rigid arm 6| which passes through the 6! by means of a pin 62 is a shoe engaging element B3. The shoe engaging element 63 comprises an angular member 64 shaped as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, said member 64 having upstanding spaced ears between which the outer end portion of the associated rigid arm 6 I is disposed and said outer end portion of said rigid arm and said spaced ears being connected together by means of the pin 62. The member 64 is provided with a pad. 65 Which is adapted to contact with the heel of a shoe S being operated on by the machine.
The heel attaching device which is applied to shoes with the aid of the machine disclosed herein is illustrated to the best advantage in Fig. 5 and comprises a sleeve B which is provided at one end with a flange C. At this opposite end the sleeve B is provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced teeth D which, before the heel attaching device is applied to a shoe, are curved inwardly slightly as shown in Fig. 5 and also in Figs. 6 and 7. When the machine is in use the motor 22 is in operation and as a result thereof the shaft I1 is subjected to continuous rotation by the power transmission belt 20. Also because of the cooperation of the bevel gears I l and IS the drill I3 is also subjected to continuous rotation. When a shoe is to have its heel attached thereto with the aid of the machine the shoe with the heel temporarily attached thereto by means of adhesive material, or otherwise, is mounted on the form 8 as shown in Fig. 2. The operator holds the back part of the shoe against the rear, curved face of the form with his hand and he depresses the proper foot pedal 55 to move the shoe engaging element 63 downwardly so as to cause the pad 65 to contact with the heel of the shoe as shown in Fig. 2. When this contact has been made he continues downward movement of the pedal and such continued movement moves the shoe and the form 8 downwardly relative to the drill 13 against the action of the coil springs ll] whereby a hole E is drilled through the insole of the shoe and into the heel thereof as shown to the best advantage in Fig. 6. The operator then removes his foot from the pedal 56 permitting the coil spring 59 to return the foot pedal 56, and the parts cooperatively associated therewith, to their elevated positions, and allowing the coil springs ID to move the form 8 and the shoe thereon upwardly.
The shoe is then removed from the form 8 and one of the heel attaching devices is introduced in the cavity 29 (Fig. 3) wherein it is centered on the upper portion of the drift 3G and rests on the top face of the guide 28. The shoe previously drilled is then applied to the form13 as shown in Fig. 3 and while the back portion of the shoe is held by the operator against the rear, curved face of the form the associated foot pedal 56 is depressed to bring the pad 65 of the shoe engaging element 53. in contact with the heel of the shoe. This contact being made, the downward movement of the foot pedal is continued to move the shoe and the form downwardly against the action of the coil springs 25, and as a result of the downward movement of the shoe and the formwith respect to the heel attaching device said heel attaching device will be introduced into the hole E previously drilled through the insole of the shoe and in the heel of said shoe as shown in Fig. '7. While maintaining his foot on the pedal 56 to retain the form 23 and the shoe thereon in their lowered positions, the operator moves the outer end of the arm 4| (Fig. 3) downwardly. This re moves the faces 41a and 41b of the extension 4! of the arm from contact with the abutment 39 and the inclined face 40 of the hub portion 38 of the cam 32, thereby permitting thecoil spring (Fig. 1) to move the cam and its hub portion toward the pulley l9 where the lugs 36 on the hub portion of the cam engage the lugs 3'! on the pulley so as to clutch said parts together for rotary movement with the shaft [7. As soon as he has depressed the arm 4| as described the operator releases said arm so as to permit the coil spring 4t to return it to its original elevated position and as a result the cam 32 will make a single rotation, contact of the inclined face 49 of the hub of the cam with the inclined face of the extension 4'! of the restored arm serving to move the cam and its hub portion away from the pulley l9 against the action of the coil spring 35 to disengage the lugs of said hub portion and said pulley. When the cam and its hub portion have reached the end of its single rotation the straight face Ma of the extension 4? of the arm 4| engages the abutment 39 of the hub portion of the cam to arrest further movement of the cam.
During the single rotation of the cam the eccentric face thereof, contacting with the head of the drift, moves said drift upwardly and the upper portion of said drift moves against the inwardly curved faces of the teeth D of the heel attaching device so as to spread said teeth outwardly into the hole E therein, as shown in Fig. 8, said drift being moved downwardly by the coil spring as the higher portion of the cam moves away from the head of the drift. When the cam has completed its single rotation the operator removes his foot from the pedal 55 thus permitting the coil spring 59 to move the pedal and the parts cooperatively associated therewith upwardly and allowing the coil springs 25 to elevate the form and the shoe thereon. The shoe is then removed from the form and from beneath the elevated shoe engaging element with its heel securely fixed in place.
I claim:
1. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising means for introducing the heel fastening devices in holes formed through the insoles and in the heels of the shoes, and means for displacing said displaceable portions of said heel fastening devices so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heels of the shoes adjacent to the holes therein.
2. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising means for introducing the heel fastening devices in holes formed through the insoles and in the heels of the shoes, and means movable through said heel fastening devices for displacing said displaceable portions of said heel fastening devices so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heels of the shoes adjacent to the holes therein.
3. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form and said means for supporting the heel fastening device being movable relative to each, other to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the the material of the heel adjacent to hole in the insole and heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein.
4. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form and said means for supporting the heel fastening device being movable relative to each other to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole in the insole and heel of the shoe, and means movable through the heel fastening device for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein. g I

A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form and said means for supporting the heel fastening device being movable relative to each other tocause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole in the insole and heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein, the last-mentioned means comprising a drift movable within said heel fastening device, a guide for supporting and guiding said drift, and means for subjecting said drift to movement.
6. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form and said means for supporting the heel fastening device being arranged for relative movement, means for moving one of said parts relative to the other thereof to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein.
7. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form and said means for support'mg the heel fastening device being arranged for relative movement, means for moving one of said parts relative to the other thereof to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the, shoe, and means movable through the heel fastening device for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them. to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein.
8. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form and said means for supporting the heel fastening device being arranged for relative movement, means for moving one of said parts relative to the other thereof to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein, the last-mentioned means compris-' ing a drift movable within said heel fastening device, a guide for supporting and guiding said drift, and means for subjecting said drift to movement.
9. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form and said means for supporting the heel fastening device being arranged for relative movement, means for moving one of said parts relative to the other thereof to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein, the last-mentioned means comprising a drift movable within said heel fastening device, a guide for supporting and guiding said drift, means for subjecting said drift to move ment, and resilient means for returning said drift to its original position after it has been subjected to movement.
10. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form being sup ported for movement relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening element, means for moving said form relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening device to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein.
11. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of a shoe supported by said form, said form being supported for movement relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening element, means for moving said form relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening device to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means movable through the heel fastening device for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein.
12. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a formfor supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form being supported for movement relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening element, means for moving said form relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening device to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein, the last-mentioned means comprising a drift movable within said heel fastening device, a guide for supporting and guiding said drift, and means for subjecting said drift to movement.
13. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form being supported for movement relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening element, means for moving said form relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening device to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite intothe material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein, the last mentioned means comprising a drift movable Within said heel fastening device, a guide for supporting and guiding said drift, means for subjecting said drift'to movement, and resilient means for returning said drift to its original position after it has been subjected to movement.
14. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, resilient means for supporting said form for movement relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening element, means for moving said form relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening device to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein.
15. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in'the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, resilient means for supporting said form for movement relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening element, means for moving said form relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening device to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein, the last mentioned means comprising a drift movable within said heel fastening device, a guide for supporting and guiding said drift, means for subjecting said drift to movement, and resilient means for returning said drift to its original position after it has been subjected to movement.
16. A machine for attaching heels to shoes with the aid of heel fastening devices in the form of flanged tubular elements provided with displaceable portions, comprising a form for supporting a shoe being operated on, means for supporting a heel fastening device in alinement with a hole drilled through the insole and in the heel of the shoe supported by said form, said form being supported for movement relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening element, means including a shoe engaging element for moving said form relative to said means for supporting the heel fastening device to cause the heel fastening device to be introduced into the hole through the insole and in the heel of the shoe, and means for displacing the displaceable portions of said heel fastening device so as to cause them to bite into the material of the heel of the shoe adjacent to the hole therein.
