This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an automatic fan attachment for sewing machines:

16 particularly in the summertime, and the oirculation of air is desirable.
Still further the invention proposes the provisionof foundation strips mounted upon the semicylindrical members, and said flexible fan blades being adapted to be mounted on said foundation strips.
Still further the invention contemplates an arrangement whereby the foundation strips may be adjusted to various positions so that the characteristics of the air circulation may be controlled. The arrangement permits a greater or lesser draft to be set up and permits the draft to be directed in various directions. This is particularly desirable where certain workers are more so sensitive to drafts than others.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and v tothe appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a gang of sewing machines and fan attachments according to this invention applied thereto.

In Fig. 1 there are work benches Ill upon which sewing machines II are mounted. Between the work benches there is a main drive shaft I2. 5 This drive shaft is provided with pulleys I3 which are engaged by belts I4 extending upwards and serving to drive the sewing machines. The operators sit upon chairs I5 outside of the benches III. The automatic fan attachments, according l0 to this invention, are mounted at spaced positions upon the shaft I2.
Each fan attachment comprises a pair of opposed semicylindrical members I6 for engaging about and on the shaft I2. A means is provided 15 for fixedly holding these members on the shaft. This {means includes flanges IS on each of the members and adjacent each other and secured together with bolts II. A foundation strip I9 is mounted on each member IS. A flexible fan blade 89 I9 is mounted on each foundation strip I9 and projects substantially radially of the shaft I2.
Each foundation strip I8 is formed with a dovetailed groove 20 engaged by a dove-tailed portion I9 formed upon the inner edge of the fan blade 25 I9. Preferably, the fan blade I9 is constructed of sheet rubber material so as to be flexible.
Each foundation strip I8 is formed with several longitudinal slots II which are engaged by screws 22 extending downwards into the material 30 of the membe I6. It is possible to loosen these screws 22 and shift the foundation strip I8 longitudinally of the shaft and so change the position of the fan blades I9 relative to an operator of one of the sewing machines.
Fan blades I9 are interposed between flanges I6 of the semi-cylindrical members I6 and are held by the bolts II. The details of the blades I9" will be given later on in this specification. The fan blades I9 may be entirely removed from 40 dove-tailed grooves 20, if so desired.
In Fig. 5, a modification of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form essentially in the fact that each fan blade I9 has its outer edge of arcuate formation. Still 45 further each foundation strip I8 is secured by the screws 22 to a base strip I6. Each base strip I6 is swivelly mounted upon the member IS. The swivel construction is as follows: An inverted T-shaped groove 24 is formed in the outer 50 I surface of each member IB and is extended in from one end thereof and terminates substantially at the center of the member.
A headed peg 25 projects from the bottom of the base strip I6 and is adapted to flt within the I ber l8 and its inner end abuts the headed stud II to engage the knurlings and firmly hold the base strip IS in a fixed position.
It is possible to loosen the set screws 21 and then to turn the base strip It to various angular positions, for example, .the angular position l8" illustrated by the dot and dash lines in Fig. 7-. The set screw 21 may then be screwed in again to hold the base' strip in its new position. As the foundation strip I8 is mounted on the base strip, it will be correspondingly turned and so will the blade I9. A change in the angle will affect the air circulating qualities of the fan.
In Figs. 8 and 9 the details of the fan blades II" are shown. Each blade consists of ,a metallic or rigid core portion 30 and a soft covering portion 30. The core portion 30 has a wide base from which the side walls taper to a point. The covering portion 30 is similarly shaped and engages over the core portion. The covering portion 30 has several cut out areas 32 exposing openings 33 in the core portion. The bolts I! are adapted to engage through these openings to hold thejan blade I!" in position. Adjacent the openings 32 the covering portion 30 has finger sections ll. These finger sections are adapted to engage beneath the flanges ii as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5. In Fig. 9, the dot and dash lines indicate the position of the member l6 with respect to the fan blade. Preferably, the covering portion 3. is of rubber.
It is to be understood that any number of blades may be used in this fan attachment, constructed of suitable material, preferably with soft edges, and of any desired size and shape for fastening same securely to the drive shaft.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
i. A fan attachment for sewing machines comprising a pair of opposed semi-cylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, means for holding said members fixedly on said shaft, founda-' tion strips mounted on'said members and flexible fan blades mounted on said strips and projecting substantially radially of said shaft, and means for adiustably holding said foundation strips, comprising slots in the foundation strips, screws engaging through said slots and threadedly engaging said members and adapted to clamp the foundation strips in fixed positions.
2. A fan attachment for sewing machines com prising a pair of opposed semi-cylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, means for holding said members fixedly on said shaft, foundation strips mounted on said members and flexible fan blades mounted on said strips and projecting substantially radially of said shaft, said foundation strips being indirectly mounted on said members and directly mounted on base strips which in turn are mounted on said members.
3. A fan attachment for sewing machines comprising a pair of opposed semi-cylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, means for holding said members fixedly on said shaft, foundation strips mounted on said members and flexible fan blades mounted on said strips and projecting substantially radially of said shaft, said foundation strips being indirectly mounted on said members and directly mounted on base strips ed stud engageable in a complementary groove in the member, and set screws for holding the studs in various turned positions.
5. A fan attachment for sewing machines comprising a pair of opposed semi-cylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, means for holding said members fixedly on said shaft, foundation strips mounted on said members and flexible fan blades mounted on said strips and projecting substantially radially of said shaft, and means for adjustablyholding said foundation strips, comprising slots in the foundation strips, screws engaging through said slots and threadedly engaging said members and adapted to clamp the foundation strips in flxed positions, said fan blades comprising a blade proper and a soft covering material to pad the edges of the blade.
6. A fan attachment for sewing machines comprising a pair of opposed semi-cylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, means for holding said members fixedly on said shaft, foundation strips mounted on said members and flexible fan blades mounted on said strips and projecting substantially radially of said shaft, and means for adiustably holding said foundation strips, comprising slots in the foundation strips, screws engaging through said slots and threadedly engaging said members and adapted to clamp the foundation strips in fixed positions, said fan blades comprising a blade proper and a soft covering material to pad the edges of the blade, extensions projecting from the said covering material, adapted to be clamped by the said foundation strip on the blade proper.

A fan attachment for sewing machines comprising a pair of opposed semi-cylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, means for holding said members fixedly on said shaft, foundation strips mounted on said members and flexible fan blades mounted on said strips and pro- Jecting substantially radially of said shaft, each of said members having flanges opposed to each other, and bolts through said flanges for holding the members on said shaft, fan blades secured between the said flanges by the last said bolts.

A fan attachment for sewing machines comprising a pair of opposed semi-cylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, means for holding said members fixedly onsaid shaft, foundation strips mounted on said members and flexible fan blades mounted on said strips and projecting substantially radially of said shaft, each of said members having flanges opposed to each other, and bolts through said flanges for holding the members on said shaft,ian blades secured between the said flanges by the last said bolts, the said fan blades being covered by a soft covering material.
9. A fan attachment for sewing machines comprising a. pair of opposed semicylindrical members for engagement on a shaft, bolts engageable through adjacent portions of said members for holding them fixedly on said shaft, and a. fan blade engaged in between said members and held by said bolts, said fan blade comprising a rigid core and a soft covering member thereon, said covering member being cut out to expose a. portion of the core through which said bolts pass.
