2 Claims. (01. 242-94) The present invention relates to new and useon one end portion of the axle 5 is a removable ful improvements in devices for handling wire, plate I. Mounted on one end portion of the particularly barbed wire, and has for one of its plate I is athreaded shank 8 which is engageable important objects to provide, in a manner as in an opening 9 which is provided therefor in the 5 hereinafter set forth, a device of this character flattened end portion ID of the adjacent leg 3. embodying a novel construction through the A nut II is threaded on the shank 8 for removmedium of which a spool of wire may be rapidly ably securing the plate I on the adjacent leg 3 unwound by one man with a minimum of labor. of the frame I.
Another very important object of the invention Journalled on the end portions of the axle 5 are 10 is to provide a wire handling device of the aforeremovable metallic discs l2 which may be of any mentioned character embodying novel means for suitable thickness and diameter. Secured to one maintaining the spool and the wire thereon in side of the discs I2 are bearing rings l3 of proper condition as said wire is unwound and suitable metal. Of course, the rings l3 increase which may be used with facility under various the area of the bearing surfaces of the discs [2 conditions, such as on the side of a hill, in high on the axle 5. 'In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, grass, or on uneven ground, etc. the reference numeral 14 designates generally Other objects of the invention are to provide a a spool of barbed wire rotatably mounted on the wire handling device of the character set forth axle 5 between the side discs l2. which will be comparatively simple in construc- It is thought that the operation of the device tion, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable will be readily apparent from a consideration of in use, compact, light in weight and which may the foregoing. Threadedly mounted to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A wire handling device comprising a substantially U-shaped frame, a transverse axle mounted on one end of one of the legs of the frame and adapted for insertion through a spool of wire, removable discs 'journalledon the end portions of the axle; and means forj detachably connecting one end portion of the axle to the free end portion of the other leg of the frame said means including a removable plate thread edly mounted on said one end portion of the axle, a threaded shank fixed on said plate and insertable through said other leg of the frame, and a nut threaded on said shank.
2. A wire handling device comprising a substantially U-shaped frame including a handle and parallel legs on said handle, a transverse axle having one end connected to the free end of one of the legs, removable discs journalled on the end portions of said axle, the free end portion of the other leg being flattened and having an opening therein, a removeable plate threadedly mounted on the other end portion of the axle, a threaded shank on the plate engageable in the q opening, and a nut threaded. on said shank for 'detachably securing the of the frame.
