An object of the invention resides in providing a. container utilizing a cover constructed from sheets of paper and having a flange integral therewith and..extending outwardly therefrom and in providing a metal hoop encircling said flange for holding the same from spreading.
Another object of the invention resides in constructing the bottom of the container with a.
flange overlying the wall structure of the container and in providing reinforcing means associated therewith.
A still further object of the invention resides outer walls and. a channel connecting the same and embracing the cover flange and in forming one of the walls of said hoop with a lip. turned inwardly therefrom and adapted to overlie the cover proper to hold the hoop applied to the cover flange.
An object of the invention resides in utilizing a reinforcing ring for stifiening the cover and in disposing said reinforcing ring within the channel of said U-shaped hoop.
Another object of the invention resides in utilizing a similar construction for the bottom flange and lower marginal portion of the wall structure of the container.
A feature'of the invention resides in providing notches in the cover hoop extending through the channel thereof for exposing portions of the cover-reinforcing ring and in employing fasteners connected to the reinforcing ring at the exposed portions thereof.
A still further object of the invention resides in constructing said hoop of sheet metal and in turning over a bead at the lower marginal portion of the hoop.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a reinforcing ring for the container hoop disposed within said bead.
. A still further object of the invention resides in providing notches in the container hoop extending through said bead for exposing portions of the container ring and in constructing the fasteners with parts adapted to cooperate with the exposed portions of the container ring to hold the cover attached to the container.
Another object of the invention resides in utilizing as a fastener a spring clip pivoted to the cover-reinforcing ring and formed with a hooked finger adapted to snap under theexposed portion of the container ring.
Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/or described.

Where containers have been constructed of paper and used in the shipment of bulky and heavy articles such as butter or other similar substances, it has been found that the container is subject to considerable injury in the handling of the same. The present invention forms an extremely practical and simple construction for reinforcing and stifiening the container and 'for guarding and-protecting the parts'thereof most readily subject to injury so as to increase the life of the container and render the same more serviceable.
A container embodying my invention is shown in Fig. 1 and is indicated in its entirety by the reference numeral A. This container comprises a body I0 open at the top which includes a wall tructure II and a bottom I2 attached thereto by means of a hoop I3. A flanged cover 14 serves to close the upper open end of the container. These parts will now be described in detail.
The wall structure II is preferably constructed of sheets of paper laid one upon the other and glued together to forin a composite structure substantially homogeneous. The wall structure II when the container is used as a butter tub is preferably conical or tapered as shown in Fig. 1 and is open at the top and bottom, being continuous circumferentially.
The bottom I2 is constructed from sheets of paper disposed one upon the other and glued together. The assembled sheets are pressed insuitable dies to form the bottom proper I5 and a flange I8 extending downwardly therefrom. In

Due to the fact that the flange I6 is constructed by bending the sheets of paper from which the bottom, is constructed, a rounded corner 2| .is formed between the bottom proper and the flange I6. This leaves an annular crevice 22 which extends about said bottom and which is disposed at said corner.
The hoop I3 is constructed from a straight narrow strip of sheet metal which is folded longitudinally along a medial line to form a straight U-shaped structure having outer and inner walls 23 and 24 and a connecting portion 25 in-the form of a channel which extends transversely of the hoop and which serves as a rim or base upon which the container rests when the hoop is applied to the wall structure and the bottom flange of the container. The straight U-shaped structure so formed is run through crimping rolls which engage the inner wall 24 and crimp the same to form corrugations 28 in said wall. By means of this method of construction, the length of the wall 24 is reduced as compared to the length of the wall 23 and the formerly straight structure is convert theends of the walls are secured together as by riveting, soldering or welding to form a hoop of the desired circumferential dimensions.
In applying the hoop I3 to the container a reinforcing ring 21 is first inserted into the channel 25. This reinforcing ring is preferably constructed of round steel wire of suitable dimensions having the ends thereof butt-welded together. The lowermost marginal portion I1 of the wall structure ofcontainer III and the flange I5 of bottom l2 are jointly inserted into the space formed between the walls 23 and 24 of the hoop I3. These parts are forced downwardly until the lower edges I8 and I8 of the said flange and wall structure engage the reinforcing ring 21. While the parts are so disposed, scoring rolls are applied to the outer wall I3 and a punching roll applied to the inner wall 25 of the hoop. These rolls are brought toward one another and as the bottom structure of the container passes between said rolls the outer wall 23 is formed with inwardly extending beads 28 and 29. At the same time the inner wall 24 is formed with a plurality of barbs 3| which extend towards the beads 28 and 29. Due

to the fact that the body of the container is constructed of paper, beads 28 and 28 and the barbs 3| become imbedded in the wall structure II and flange I6 and the said hoop is rigidly secured thereto. At the same time a rib 32 is formed on said wall structure opposite the bead 28 which extends into the interior of the. container. The bead 28 is so disposed that the rib 32 fills in the space 22 formed by the rounded corner 2| of the bottom I2 which serves as a fillet and also assists in holding the parts attached to one another. It will be noted that the hoop I3 in addition to holding the parts attached to one another and restraining relative movement thereof, forms a guard which protects the lowermost edges I8 and I9 of the flange I6 and the lowermost marginal portion I1 of the container proper. The rim or base of the hoop I3 formed by the channel 25 serves as a support for the container proper, and also functions as a skid by means of which the container may be readily slid on the surface on which it rests. The ring 21 operates to reinforce and stiffen the bottom structure of the container and prevents bending of the flange I6 and injury to the same through rough handling of the container.
The body I0 of container A is open at its upper end as previously stated and the wall structure II thereof is hence formed with a raw edge 33. At the upper end of the container is provided a hoop 34. .This hoop is .conical or tapered the same as thewall structure II and is constructed from a sheet of metal bent intolthe desired form and having the ends thereof riveted or welded together. This hoop is formed at its lowermost edge with a bead 35. Bead 35 is constructed by bending the lowermost marginal portion of the hoop outwardly and then back. upon itself to provide-a'tubular structure having an elongated circular opening 36 extending circumferentially about the same. Within this .opening is disposed a reinforcing ring 31 similar to the reinforcing ring 28. This reinforcing ring is constructed of steel and the ends thereof are butt-welded together. In applying the hoop to the container the same is placed over the bottom of the container and forced along the tapered wall structure II thereof until the extreme upper edge of the hoop projects outwardly beyond the wall structure. This portion of the hoop is then turned over to form an inwardly extending lip 38 which overlies the raw edge '33 of the wall structure II. This lip serves to protect the said raw edge and at the same time serves to hold the loop rigidly attached to the container. In addition to the lip 38, rivets 38 may be used to further secure the hoop 34 to the wall structure II, which rivets extend through said hoop and wall structure and are riveted in place as shown in Fig. 4. The hoop 34 is constructed at suitable intervals with notches H which are formed by cutting away a portion of said hoop at the locality of the bead to expose portions 43 of the reinforcing ring 31. The exact construction of these notches is best shown in Fig. 3. The purpose for which these notches are formed will be presently described in detail.
The cover I4 is constructed with a planiform' portion 44 adapted to extend across the open end of the container and with a flange 45 depending therefrom and encircling the upper marginal portion of the container. The flange 45 of cover I4 is received within a U-shaped hoop 46 best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This hoop is similar in construction to the hoop l3. and has an outer wall 41, an inner wall 48 and a channel 49 serving as a connecting por- This hoop is also constructed from a straight strip of metal which is bent into a straight U and thereafter corru gated or crimped to form a circular structure. The ends of the hoop are secured together by welding, riveting or otherwise. In the application of the hoop 46 to the flange 45, a reinforcing ring is first inserted into the channel 49. Thereafter the flange 45 of cover I4 is inserted into the space between-the two walls 41 and 48 and pressed down against the upper surface of the ring 5|, The upper edge of wall 48 of said hoop engages the under surface of the planiform portion 44 of cover l4. The outer wall 41 of the hoop is of greater height than the inner wall and when the hoop is first applied to flange 45 with. The use'of these notches will be presently described in detail.
For securing the cover to the container proper a number of fasteners 53 are employed which are constructed of spring material. These fasteners are formed at their upper ends with eyes 54 which extend into the notches 52 and are threaded on the reinforcing ring 5|. Said fasteners are further constructed at their lower ends with hooked fingers 55. The fasteners pivot on thering 5|, the eyes 54 serving as bearings and are adapted when brought toward the container to assume the position shown in dotted lines at 56 in Fig. 4. When pressure is applied to the fasteners 53 the hooked fingers 55 may be forced underneath the exposed portions 43 of the re-- inforcing ring 31 and the fasteners hooked "in place as indicated in full lines in Fig. 4. 1 When so disposed the fasteners fill up the notches, and form a continuation of the bead 35.
' The use of the invention is as follows: When the container is used'for butter or some similar substance, a paper liner is placed within the vto facilitate the leveling off .of the contents of the container. The cover" I4 is then applied and the flange 45 brought down over the upper marginal portionof the wall structure ll of body ID. This brings the p'ortion 49 of hoop 46' immediately above the head 35 as shown in Fig; 4. The cover is then rotated until the notches 52 register with the notches 4|. The fasteners 53 are next forced inwardly and engaged beneath in the containers; more susceptible to injuryare guarded so that which is of greater diameter than any other portion of the container or cover. By means of this particular construction, laterally directed forces are transmitted directly to the reinforcing ring 5| through bead 35 so that the cover flange and the body of the container are guarded and protected. This surface is made continuous throughout the entire length of the bead by means of the intervening fasteners 53 so that the tub if laid on its side may be readily rolled. While in such position all portions of the container and cover other than the bead 35 and hoop |3 are free from the surface on which the container is placed, thereby guarding such structures and preventing injury thereto during rolling of the container.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 I have shown a modifica tion of the invention in which a slightly different type of fastener is employed. Inasmuch as the container cover and hoop construction are substantially identical, the description of thesev parts will not be. repeated and the same reference numerals will be used to indicate corre sponding parts. v
In the structure shown in Figs. 6, 7 an 8, the notches formed in the hoop 46 are dispen ed with. In place of the fasteners 53, tongues 58 are employed which are constructed of flexible sheet metal. These tongues are welded or otherwise secured to the inner. wall 46 of said hoop and have portions 59 projecting downwardly therefrom. In the use-of this type of fastener the cover is applied in the same manner as previously described and when in place said tongues overlie the exposed portions 43 of ring 31 as shown in dotted lines at 60 in Fig; 8. While the cover is held in such position the extreme ends 6| of said tongues are bent back under the exposed portions 43 of the reinforcing ring 31. To reduce the angularity between the portions 59 of the tongues 56 the bead 35 of hoop 34 is disposed considerably below the hoop 46, leaving an appreciable space 64 between the flange of the cover and the bead 35. v
In Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 12 I have shown still another modification of the invention which is similar to that shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. In these figures the. same reference numerals have been used to designate corresponding parts. In this form of the invention, however, the portion 59 of tongue 56 is inserted between the reinforcing ring '43 and the wall structure U of body l0. Thereafter the extreme end 6| of the saidtongue is bent upwardly and about the exterior of the exposed portion 43 of reinforcing ring 31 as clearly shown in Fig. 11. To facilitate the insertion of the tongue 58 between the ring 31 and the wallstructure ll of container ID, the ring 31 is flattenedat intervals as indicated at 62.-
The flattened portions 62 are disposed at the notches 4| so that spaces 63 are left between the ring and wall structure through which the tongues may be readily inserted.
My invention is highly advantageous in that an extremely rigid and sturdy container construction is provided whereby bulky commodities such as butter and the like may be repeatedly shipped With my invention the parts breakage thereofor injury thereto is greatly reduced. My 'inventioncan be constructed at an economical cost. The container can be easily (rolled or skidded. In the filling of the container the body hoop provides a metal edge over which a leveling device may be moved. My invention is extremely attractive in appearance. ,With my in vention the cover can be quickly and easily applied or removed and when once applied is firmly attached to thecontainer.
Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention. j
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a container open at its upper end, a cover'for the container having a depending flange overlying the upper marginal portion of the container, a hoop encircling said marginal portion of the container, and annular means on said hoop extending outwardly beyond the outermost part of said cover and flange throu hout the major portion of the circumferential extent of said hoop and of substantially the same diameter throughout its extent and forming a guard for protecting the cover and flange and a rail on which the container may roll.
2. In combination with a container open at its upper end, a cover for the container having a depending flange overlying the upper marginal portion of-the container, a hoop encirclingisaid marginal portion of the container, and a bead on said hoop encircling the container and extending outwardly beyond the outermost part of said cover and flange and of substantially the same diameter throughout .its extent to form aguard for protecting the same and a rail on which the container may roll.
3. In combination with, a cover for a container open at one end. said cover having a fl e overlying the marginal portion of the container, a hoop U-shaped in cross-section having inner and outer wallsand a channel connecting said walls, said hoop embracing. said cover flange, and a reinforcing ring in said channel at the free edge of said cover flange. v
4. In combination with a cover for a container open at one end, said cover having a flange overlying the marginal portion of the container, a hoop u-shaped'in cross-section having inner and outer walls and a channel connecting said walls, said hoop said cover flange, a reinforc- 8 ring insaid channel at thefree edge of said cover flange, and a lip turned inwardly from the outer wall of said loop and overlying said cover to hold said cover flange within said hoop.
5. In combination with a container open at one end, a cover for the open end of, the container, said cover having a flange overlying the marginal portion of the body, a hoop U-shaped in cross section having inner and outer wallsand a channel connecting said walls, said hoop embracing said flange, a reinforcing ring in said channel atthe free edge of said closure flange, said hoop having a notch extending through the channel thereof and exposing a portion'of said rein forcing ring, a fastener member pivoted to said ring at the exposed portion thereof, and means on said container for cooperation therewith.
6. In combination with a container open at its upper end. a cover for the container having a depending flan'go overlying the upper marginal portion of the container, ahoop constructedof sheet metal and encircling said marginalportion of the container, said hoop having the lower portion thereof turned outwardly and back upon itself to form a bead situated below the lower' edge of said cover flange, a reinforcing ring disposed within said bead, said container hoop being formed with a notch extending through ,said bead and exposing a portion of said container reinforcing ring, a hoop U-shaped in crosssection having inner and outer walls and a channel connecting said walls, said hoop embracing the cover flange, a reinforcing ring in said channel at the free edge of said'cover flange, said cover hoop having a notch therein extending through said channel and exposing a portion of the cover-reinforcing ring, a fastener pivoted to the exposed portion of said cover ring, and engaging the exposed portion of said container ring. v
7. In combination with a container open at its upper end, a cover for the container having a depending'flange overlying the upper marginal portion of the container, a hoop constructed of sheet metal and encircling said marginal portion of the container, said hoop having the lower portion thereof turned outwardly and back upon itself to form a bead situated below the lower edge of said cover flange, a reinforcing ring disposed within said bead, said container hoop being formed with a notch through said bead exposing a portion of said container reinforcing ring, a fastener pivoted to the cover and having a hooked finger adapted to snap in place beneath the exposed portion of said container ring.
8. In combination with the cover for a container open at one end, said cover comprising a planiform portion adapted to extend across the open end of the container and a flange depending therefrom, a metal hoop encircling said flange upon the exterior thereof, said hoop having a part overlying the planiform portion and a part underlying the lower edge of the flange, and fastening means for securing the cover to the container, said fastening means being attached to said hoop.

In combination with a container open at its upper end, a cover for the container having a depending flange overlying the upper marginal forming a downwardly facing shoulder, a hoop U-shaped in cross-section having inner and outer walls and a channel connecting said walls, said hoop embracing the cover flange, a reinforcing ring in said channel at the free edge of said cover flange, said cover hoop having a notch therein extending through said channel and exposing a portion of the cover reinforcing ring, a fastener pivoted to the exposed portion of said cover ring, and a hooked finger on said fastener engaging said shoulder.
12. In combination with the cover for a container open at one end, said cover comprising a planiform portion adapted to extend across the open end of the container and a flange depending therefrom, a metal hoop encircling said flange upon the exterior thereof, said hoop having a part overlying the planiform portion and a part underlying the lower edge of the flange and spaced therefrom, and a reinforcing ring disposed between said last-named part of the hoop and the lower edge of the cover flange.
13. In combination with the marginal portion of a container having a free edge, a hoop U-- shaped in cross-section'having inner and outer 'walls and a-channel connecting said walls, said hoop embracing said marginal portion, a reinforcing ring in said channel disposed adjacent the edge of the marginal portion, and means on the outer hoop wall extending inwardly and holding the hoop attached to the container portion. 14. In combination with a container open at its upper end, a cover for the container having a depending flange overlying the upper marginal portion of the container, a hoop constructed of sheet metal and encircling said marginal portion of the container, said hoop having the lower portion thereof turned outwardly and back upon itself to form a bead situated below the lower edge of said cover flange, andhaving a downwardly facing shoulder, and a fastener pivoted to the cover and having a hook adapted to snap in place beneath said shoulder.
