Description
J. E. GRAET'Z. Reclining-Chair.
No. 213,894. Patented April 1,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JULIUS E. GRAETZ, OF ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT lN RECLINING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,894, dated April 1, 1879; application filed January 8, 1879.
To all whom iii-may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs E. GRAETZ, of Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Reclining- Ohairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section and Fig. 3 is a side view, representing the pivoted supporting frame disengaged from the seat-frame.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to adjustable reclining and rocking chairs; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The seat-frame consists of two curved side pieces, A, extending rearward, and pivoted to the rockers B near the rear end of the latter. The seat is formed by cross-pieces O (3, connecting the side pieces A, and an additional brace or crosspiece, D, is employed in the rear of the seat to insure strength.
The back-frame is formed of side pieces E,
pivoted to the seat-frame at the rear of the seat, where a cross-piece or brace, F, is employed. The sides of the back-frame are connected by cross-pieces, the lower one of which, G, is provided with a metallic plate or catch, H. The arms I are pivoted to the back-frame, as shown, and are provided with pivoted downwardly-projecting links J, pivoted to the sides of the seat-frame near the front end of the seat.
A supporting-frame-consisting of side pieces K, connected by cross-pieces L, is pivoted to the rockers near the front end; and. the sides K have tenons M fitting in mortises or sockets N in the sides of the seat-frame near the front, thus supporting the seat, as shown in Fig. l.
O is a rock-shaft, pivoted between the sides of the seat-frame, and provided with a downwardly-projecting segmental ratchet, P, en-
gaging with the catch H upon the cross-piece G of the back-frame. The rock-shaft O is operated by a handle, Q, arranged upon the side of the seat, convenient to the occupant of the chair.
The back R and seat S are formed of any suitable material or upholstery stretched upon the back and seat frames above and in front of the point at which they are pivoted together. A continuous strip or length of material may be used, as shown in the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The back of the chair may be thrown down or back to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, forming a reclining-chair, by simply disengaging the ratchet P from the catch H, this being effected by operating the handle Q. By drawing the arms I forward the back may again be raised to any desired elevation, in which it is kept by the catch H engaging the ratchet P, the latter being provided at its lower end with a weight, T, by which it is thrown into engagement with the catch H automatically; or the supporting-frame K L may be folded back between the rockers, as
shown in Fig. 3, thus forming, when the seat, too, is let down, a very low and comfortable reclining-chair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the rockers B, seatframe A O D, pivoted to said rockers, and back-frame E Gr, pivoted to and adjustable in relation to said seat-frame, with the supporting-frame K L, pivoted to the rockers B, and having its upper end detachably connected to the forward end of the seat-frame, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS E. GBAETZ.
Witnesses:
EVERARD S. OROW'ELL, FRANK L. STONE.
