My invention relates to improvements in power driven churns and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, variable speed motor drive for churns of the reciprocating dasher type.
Other objects, more or less subordinate in nature, are also comprehended by my invention all of which together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Describing my invention in detail, with reference to the drawings by numerals,. my improved churn comprises a drive supporting base I including a plate-like platform 2 of general rectangular form supported at its edges by suitable sills 3 and having a right angularly shaped notch 3', or recess, in one corner thereof forming an extension 4 on the platform along side said notch 3. Arising from the extension 4 is a standard 5 comprising a base casting 6 suitably secured, as at l, to said extension, a tubular section 8 upstanding from said casting, and a T-fitting 9 suitably secured on the upper end of the section 8. The fitting '9 functions as a bearing and has rotatably mounted therein a horizontally extending shaft l0 one end of which is located above one edge of the notch 3, and has fast thereon a crank disk H. Extending from the section 8 laterally over the notch 3 is an arm [2, in the form of a pipe section, to which is suitably secured a vertically disposed bearing sleeve l3 located over the notch 3 and from which there extends laterally and vertically a yoke-like bracket I4 having suitably secured to its upper end a second bearing sleeve 50 i5 vertically aligned with the bearing sleeve l3. Slidably mounted in the bearing sleeves l3 and I5 for reciprocation therein and to extend above and below said sleeves is a squared plunger rod 16. The plunger rod I6 is reciprocated by means of a pitman rod I! pivotally connected to the crank disk H, as at l8, and similarly connected to the plunger bar l6 as at I9.
The end of the shaft l0 opposite the crank disk H has fast thereon a large belt pulley 20 and a balance wheel 2|. An electric motor 22 is suitably secured on the platform 2. The armature shaft 23 of the motor 22 has fast thereon a plurality of belt pulleys of different diameters designated 24, 25 and 26 appropriately related to the pulley 20 for connection thereto, selectively, by a suitable belt 21. The motor 22 may be provided with any suitable form of controls, not shown, and a plug-in line, not shown, for connection to the house current. 1
As will now be seen the bar I6 is reciprocated, under the power of the motor 22 over the notch 3'. The purpose of this arrangement is to permit the described drive mechanism to be located above a churn 28 of the vertically reciprocating dasher type, as upon a suitable support represented at 29, and with the plunger bar It close to and in the rear of the dasher rod 30 of said churn for connection thereto and operation thereof, but, sufliciently offset to the rear of said dasher rod to permit manual reciprocation of said dasher rod without interference with said bar It. The connection between the bar It and dasher rod 30 takes the form of a bar 3| pivotally secured at one end to the lower end of said bar [6, as at 3|, and having a sleeve-like coupling 32 depending from its other end for taking over the upper end of the dasher rod 30 and attachment thereto as by a set screw 33. As will be seen, by loosening the set screw 33 the described coupling 32 may be detached from the dasher rod 30 and said bar 3| and the coupling 32 swung to one side out of interfering relation to the dasher rod 30 so that the latter may be manually operated.
By shifting the belt 21 selectively on the pul- 4 leys 24, 25, 26 the speed of operation of the dasher rod 30 may be varied at will. The numeral 34 designates a lubricating cup on the fitting 9 for a purpose which will be understood.
The operation of my invention, together with the advantages thereof, will be readily 'understood from the foregoing without further explanation.
Although I have described in the foregoing certain preferred constructions and arrangements of parts, it is to be understood that modifications may be resorted to without departing from the inventive concept and that right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim ls:-
The combination with a churn having a vertically reciprocable dasher rod, or a power drive for said rod adapted to be disposed above said churn and including a base having a cut-out corner located over the churn, a plunger rod mounted on said base for vertical reciprocation in said cut-out, and an operating connection between the lower end of said plung nd said rod comprising a bar extending laterally from said plunger and outwardly of said cut-out and detachably secured to said rod, said bar being pivotally connected to said plunger to be swung laterally into a position clear of said churn to permit when detached unobstructed manual reciprocation of said dasher rod.
