Description

NOV. 29, 1938. H. C, |PTHROTT 2,138,182
BUILDING STRUCTURE Filed March 6, 1937 Patented Nov. 29, 1938 I UNITED STATES PATENT oFFiCE i 1 Claim.
My invention relates to the structures of buildings, and pertains more particularly tomeans for preventing the invasion thereof by destructive vermin, insects and rodents. n
It is the object of my invention to produce sills and plates formed of metal or other suitable material each of which is provided with a continuously extending trough or gutter, adapted to contain an insecticide or vermin deterrent, to be interposed between the foundation and superstructure of buildings. A further object thereof is to provide a more simple, cheap and elcient device of said character than has heretofore been attained.
To these ends, and others that will unfold as the following description progresses, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a building showing the use of my invention upon its foundation and an intermediate pier;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the wall of a building with siding removed or broken away and disclosing the studding mounted on a sill;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View of a portion of a foundation and a pier positioned adjacent thereto upon each of which is equipped with my invention and upon which are supported the outer wall and the end o-f an interior beam respectively;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the wall of a brick chimney with my invention inserted therein and showing the use of a plate carried thereon transversely to support the superstructure;
Figure 5 is a modified form of my sill shown in cross section;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of one form of sill, and
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view of a modied form of my invention employed to prevent vermin and insects entering a building on water pipes and the like leading into a building.
Referring now to the drawing,
I designates the foundation Wall and 2 an interior pier preferably of cement blocks or other impervious material. ried a metallic sill 3 constructed, shaped and designed to support the superstructure of a building and prevent the invasion ther-cof by vermin, insects and rodents.
In general, said sill 3 comprises a plate a supported upon depending flanges b and c at or ad- Mounted upon each is car- (Gl. 18S-34) jacent to the edges of the plate and continuous therewith. At the base of each flange is formed a continuous trough or gutter d compris-ed of an outwardly or laterally extending plate e and an upturned rim f extending partly the height'of the flanges b and c. The parts thus described are preferably cast or stamped integrally.
In the embodiment of my sill shown in use in outer walls, the top plate a extends or projects laterally to cover the trough cl thus providing a wider base or platform for the superstructure, and restricting the opening into the trough. As more particularly shown in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing, the top plate a may extend laterally and beyond the outer trough and rim f, whereby a wider base for the superstructure is attained, and at its outer edge may be providedwith a downturned lip g.
This embodiment of my sill may be inset 0r recessed upon the top of the building foundation as shown in Figure 5, and an apron Ill attached thereto as by a spring-pressed clip II carried on the under face of the sill plate. Said apron is positioned flush with the wall of the foundation and superstructure and serves to cover the recess lc in the foundation and conceal the sill and also form a removable shield for the trough and its contents at.
In the brick chimney 3 shown in Figure 4, the sills 3 of my invention are mounted as above described on a foundation; above and upon which is placed a heavy metal plate I2, the outer edges of which are turned or bent downwardly to form an apron or shield 7c flush with the chimney walls.
- As an additional protection against vermin invasion, I provide an annular trap I3 surrounding each of the pipes that lead into the building. Said trap comprises the collar I4 through which the pipe extends and to which it is attached. The
collar is flared adjacent its top at I5 to form a space for lead and calking material and is provided with trough IB for containing vermin and insect deterrent It will be understood that the several units of my sill structures are spaced apart from each other and the beams, joists or studding supported thereon, and that there is no other connection between the foundation and superstructure, which thereby supplies complete insulation and protection against the invasion of vermin and insects when the troughs are charged with oil or other deterrent material.
It will be appreciated that the device thus described comprises a simple unitary arrangement of parts for performing the double functions of providing substantial and economical building construction and supplying protection against the annoyance and devastation of insects, vermin and rodents; and it will be further appreciated that the details of my invention may be varied Within a Wide range Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
I claim:
A sill for building structures, comprising a bearing plate supportedl upon depending flanges, laterally extending dished anges or troughs on the lower edges of said depending flanges, said bearingv plate extending laterally beyond the dished flange on one side thereof, and an apron 5 removably carried on the edge of the extended portion of the plate, substantially as described.
