Description

Nov. 8, 1938. 5 BJNELSQN 2,135,910
BATTERY TERMINAL Filed Dec. 10, 1936 Patented Nov. s, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to cable terminal connections, and more particularly to cable terminal connections used with storage batteries, the primary object of the invention being to provide a terminal connection having yieldable means which will cause the terminal to securely grip a battery post, eliminating the use of bolts and nuts commonly used in securing cable terminals to battery posts.
An important object of the invention is to provide a cable terminal of this character having overlapping ends, the overlapping ends being so constructed that they will completely encircle the battery post with which the terminal is used, and one wherein the contacting surfaces of the terminal will be forced into close engagement with each other when the terminal is positioned on the battery post, thereby insuring a true contact at all times.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a battery cable terminal positioned over a battery post.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the cable terminal connection prior to the positioning of the cable terminal connection on a battery post.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is an end elevatlonal view of the battery cable terminal connection.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the cable terminal connection is indicated generally by the reference character 5, the connection being constructed of a composition of lead and Babbitt metal, commonly employed in cable terminal connection construction.
As shown, the cable terminal connection includes a substantially circular portion 6 split to provide overlapping ends 1 and 8. These overlapping portions 1 and 8 are so tapered that when the connection is fitted over a battery post, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 9, the overlapping portions will be forced into close engagement with each other,
providing a close fit, and insuring a true contact at all times. This construction also eliminates recesses and pockets usually found in cable terminal connection construction, and in which foreign matter due to corrosion, usually collects. 5
Embedded in the substantially circular portion 6 of the cable terminal connection, is a steel spring member I0 which is substantially wide and of a length so that the ends thereof will overlap and separate the overlapping ends 1 and 8 of the 10 substantially circular portion 6, when the cable terminal connection is disconnected from a battery post, or out of use.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the overlapping ends I and 8, will be 5 brought into close engagement with each other, when the cable terminal connection is forced downwardly over a battery post, as shown by the drawing.
When it is desired to position a cable terminal 20 connection, it is only necessary to position the cable terminal connection over the battery post and twist the cable terminal connection slightly to the right or left, at the same time pressing downwardly on the cable terminal connection. 5 To remove the device, the cable terminal connection is moved slightly to the right or left, and slightly lifted.
The reference character I I indicates an extension which is formed with a socket to receive the 30 cable i2. This extension is also provided with a cut-out portion so that portions of the extension may be forced inwardly to closely grip the cable II. It may be desired to secure the cable within the socket by running solder or the like material 35 in the cut-out portion, as shown by'Figures 3 and 4 of the drawing.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A battery connection comprising a body por- 40 tion constructed of yieldable conductive material, said body portion including a split ring section, the ends of the split ring section being held in overlapped engagement with each other and tapered to fine feather-like ends, a spring mem- 45 ber embedded in the split ring section and extending to points adjacent to the ends of the split ring section the ends of the spring member overlapping and adaptedto urge the overlapping sections of the split ring section inwardly, and said split ring section adapted to be positioned over a battery terminal, securely gripping the battery terminal.
