The. construction and operation of the 'I 'he spindle 20 of the packagesupport I2 turns in bearings 44 mounted on a part of the flyer F, and as the flyer turns, the package support I2 and spindle 20 turn to pay-off tape from the tape package T as tape is wound onto the cable C. The turning of the package support I2 and spindle 20 is against the frictional resistance of the brake 22 regulated by the action thereon of the tension lever 26 and spring 38, as hereinbefore described.
According to the present invention the taping heads are so constructed and arranged that the mid-planes of tape packages T of different width lie in the mid-plane of the package holder, designated by the line MP, Fig. 1, and the arrangement of the guides 40, 4| arm 28 and Winding guide G is such that the center lines of tapes t of different width run over the said parts, at the same points. The effect of such construction and arrangement is that tapes of difierent width may be applied smoothly in either a lap wrap or a butt wrap without buckling, and under tension.
To this end the plates are provided with a means 50 for positioning the plates I4 and I5 so as to position and hold the tape packages T of different width with the mid-planes thereof in the mid-plane MP of the support I2. The means 50 for positioning and holding the plates I4, I5 as aforesaid may, as here shown comprise a pair of nuts 53, 54 arranged within the hub I8 and engaging. an oppositely threaded screw 56. Suitable connections are provided between the nuts 53, 54 and plates l4, I5. To provide for the replenishment of tape packages in the holder I2, the connection between theoutside plate I5 and the nut 54 at the outer end of the hub, is a detachable one. As here shown the inner plate I4 is connected to the nut-53 by means of one or more lugs 58, which latter pass through a longitudinal slot or slots 59 to the inner side of the hub.
The detachable connection between the outer plate I5 and the nut 54 may comprise one or' more lugs 62 projecting from the plate I5 through a slot or slots 64 in the outer end of the hub into a position to be engaged by the nut 54. 'As here shown, the lugs 62 may be. provided on a ring 66 which is fastened to the plate I5 by screws or the like as indicated at 68, Figs. 1 and 4. Each slot 64 has an ofiset portion 64* running through the end of the hub I8. Nut 54 is provided with one or more slots It each of which is in alinement with the offset portion 64 of a slot- 64. The nut 54 may be prevented from turning by means of a Slot I4 therein and a key or rib I6 runninglongitudinally along the in side of the hub I8.
Any suitable means may be provided for turning the oppositely threaded screw: 55.

engagement with the sides of the tape package T, and for better efiecting the clamping action, the inner faces of the plates I4 and I5 may be provided with a plurality of radial ribs 88.
The action of the oppositely threaded screw 56 and the nuts 54 is to move the plates I4, I5 symmetrically toward the mid-plane MP. Consequently tape packages of diiTerent width will be supported and held in the'package support I2 with the mid-plane packages all lying in the midplane MP of the package support.
To replenish the taping head, the oppositely threaded screw 56 is turned to bring the nut 54 to a position where the lugs 62 on the outer plate I5 may enter the oifset portion I54 of the slot 64. The nut 54 is shown in the position just described in Fig. 4. The plate I5 and the lugs 62 thereon are thenslid longitudinally from a position a Fig. 7 to position b Fig. 7, then rotated from position b to the position 0 in the offset portion 64 of the slot, and then slid off of the hub through slot 64% as indicated at positions d and c, Fig. 7. The spent tape package is then removed, and a new package placed onto the hub. .Plate I5 is then replaced on the hub and brought to a position where it will again be engaged by the nut 54 by the reverse of the movements just describedwith reference to Fig. 7. When the plate is in position and the lugs. 62 thereon arein the portion of the slot 64 beyond the offset portion, the oppositely threaded screw 56 is turned in a position to move the plates I4, I5 toward the mid-plane MP and thereby position and hold the replenishing tape package T in the support I2 with its mid-plane in the mid-plane MP of the support I2.
The invention may receive other embodiments thanthat herein specifically illustrated and described.
What is claimed is: I
1. A taping head of an apparatus for winding tape or the like on cables or the like comprising a rotatable tape-package support, and tensionregulating means for acting on said package support to allow the tape to pay off from the package under tension, and means on said support adjustable with respect to the transverse midplane thereof, for positioning and holding tapepackages of difierent width with the mid-planes thereof in the transverse mid-plane of said support.

A taping head of an apparatus for winding tape or the like on cables or the like comprising a rotatable tape-package support, and tensionregulating means for acting on said package support to allow the tape to pay off from the package under tension, and means on said support adjustable with respect to the transverse mid-plane thereof, for positioning and holding tape-packages of diiferent width with the midplanes thereof in the transverse mid-plane of said support, said package support comprisinga hub, a pair of plates and means for moving said plates in opposite directions to positions symmetrically spaced from the transverse midplane of said support. 1
3. A taping head according to'claim 2, further comprising a detachable connection betweenthe plate at the outer side of the support and said moving means.

A taping head of an apparatus for winding tape or the like on cables or the like comprising a rotatable tape-package support, and tensionregulatingmeans for actingon said package support to allow the tape to pay ofl from-the package under tension, and means on said support adjustable with respect to the transverse mid-plane thereof, for positioning and holding tape-packages of different Width with the midplanes thereof in the transverse mid-plane of said support, said package support comprising a hub, a pair of plates, a pair of nuts, a connection between each plate and each nut, and an oppositely threaded screw engaging said nuts for moving the plates through said connections in opposite directions to positions symmetrically spaced from the transverse mid-plane of said support.

A taping head according to claim. 4, wherein said nut at the outer end of the hub has a slot therein and said hub at said outer end has a longitudinal slot therein having an offset portion, and wherein the connection of the outer plate to its nut comprises a lug projecting through said hub slot into said hub, said outer-plate being detachable by movement of said outer nut to a position where said lug can reach the ofiset portion of the hub-slot, and then giving said plate a longitudinal movement and a rotary movement to carry said lug thereon through the slots in said hub and nut.
6. A taping head according to claim 2, further including means for holding the tape package against turning in its support, said means including said plates for clamping the sides of said tape-package.
7. A taping head according to claim 1, further comprising guides over which said tape is reeved in running from said package to a cable or the like on which it is wound, one of said guides comprising a crowned part, the center-lines of tapes of different widths running from the package over identical points on the guides and to the apex of the crown of said crowned guide.
