1 Claim.
My invention relates to air control devices'and has for its object to provide a new and eflicient device for controlling the air to the blower'of any type of stoker.
,A still further object is to provide a device for controlling the draft conditions in a stoker so that when the stoker is running a predetermined amount of air is all that may be drawn into the stoker at any time, with means provided to adjust this amount of air, and to shut off all air from entering the stoker and therefore the furnace when the stoker is not operating, thus controlling the draft through the stoker at all times efficiently and effectively, providing better burning conditions and preventing the burning of fuel in the furnace when the stoker is not operating, by not allowing any draft in the furnace.
These objects I accomplish with the device i1- lustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specification forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claim.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device shown attached to a diagrammatic showing of a stoker.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the device.
Figure 3 is a view of the fiat valve used in the device.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the casing looking toward the flap valve with the opening shown in dotted lines.
In the drawing I have shown the stoker as A, the stoker fan as B, and the casing of my device as C. This casing is made larger at the top than at the bottom and the face I of the casing is provided with an opening 2 therein adapted to fit over the fan opening to provide all of the air for the fan and a cross bar 3 is provided across the opening by which the device is secured to the fan by passing a stud bolt through a hole in the bar 3. The casing has the back side sloping to the closed top 4 and a sloping partition 5 is provided in the casing dividing the easing into two chambers 6 and l. The opening 2'is into the chamber 6 and the chamber 1 is connected with a collecting device D by a pipe 9 in an opening Ill in the top 4 leading into the chamber 1.
.A control flap valve V is pivotally mounted in the casing C by adjustable blocks ll being secured to the side walls of the chamber 6 by bolts 42. The pivot shaft I3 of the valve V is passed into the blocks in suitable holes and the blocks act as bearings for and provide adjustments of the shaft l3. The adjustment for the pivot valve is provided by the blocks ll being pivoted in the casing and the hole through the top of the blocks H with the hole through the side wall of the casing will give some degree of vertical adjustment while the pivotal mounting of the block allows for forward and backward movement of the lower end of the blocks ll thus, giving horizontal adjustment to the blocks and therefore to the shaft l3 and the valve V. With this adjustment feature, the position of the valve may be set perfectly to seal the opening through the partition 5 and the position of the shaft [3 may be so set that there will be no binding action upon the action of valve. The flap valve is made with a fiat face l5 adapted to engage the sloping partition' 5, and both the partition 5 and. the abutting face of the fiap valve are provided with suitable strips of packing l6 and H. The flap valve is reinforced around the edges by bending flanges l8 therearound and the bottom of the valve is bent into a counterbalance base IS with the edges of the base flanged at 20, said flanges being that portion through which the pivot shaft I3 is passed. A distance control member 22 is suspended from a closure plate 23 mountedover an entrance 24 in the top of the chamber 6 and the member 22 is suspended from the bottom of the plate 23 by a bracket 25. The control member 22 is formed with a head 26 adapted to engage the fiap valve to limit the throw thereof and therefore the amount of opening thereof. The member-22 con sists of a threaded body to which the head is formed and the body passed through the bracket 25 with lock nuts 28 and 29 to hold the member rigid and adjustable.
The collector D or smoke, dust, and hot air collecting portion of the device consists of cylindrical body 36 havingthe bottom portion 3| reduced to fit onto the top end of the connecting pipe 9. This collecting portion D is providedwith radially extended pipe fittings 33 and the collecting pipes 34 are placed therein or thereon as desired to collect the dust and smoke from the upper strata of the furnace room. These pipes 34 are tapered toward the fittings 33 and the outer ends 35 are of larger diameter than the portions engaging the pipe fittings 33. Ports 36 are provided through the side walls of the pipes 34 to distribute the suction over a greater area. The ends 35 of the pipes 34 are also open. Ports 38 are provided through the side wall of the body and areas are provided to accommodate the suction of the blower fan of the stoker.
Mechanical modifications may be made in the detailed construction of this device without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim.
The operation of the device is as follows:
With the casing mounted to the stoker blower distance control member 22 is set to allow the valve V to open only a'predetermined amount. The device is ready for use and as the stoker turns On, the suction of the blower fan draws the valve V inwardly to engage the member 22 opening the port in the partition 5. This draws sutficient air into the stoker for complete combustion of the fuel and may be regulated in volume by the distance control member 22. When the stoker is shut Ofi the valve V closes back onto the sloping partition 5 and closes off all air passing through the chamber 1 into the chamber 6 and thence to the stoker, thereby closing ofi the draft through the furnace fire box and stack, and saving fuel and heat at the same time.
The saving of heat is accomplished by preventingany cold air entering the fire box of the furnace and passing directly through this heated area cooling it ofi quickly and this naturally saves heat as it maintains the heat of the furnace a greater period of time and thus the stoker is turned On less times during the day.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing formed to fit over the opening of a stoker fan; a sloping partition in said casing having an opening therethrough of greater area than the opening to the stoker fan, said partition dividing the easing into two compartments, one
' leading into the stoker fan, and the other leading to the atmosphere; brackets pivotally secured to the side walls of the compartment leading into the stoker fan} a pivot'shaft carried between said brackets and supported adjustably therein; a flap valve pivotally mounted on said shaft adjacent thelower edge of the valve to control the opening of the partition and counter balanced by a right angled portion on the bottom end thereof; and means to control the amount of opening of the flap valve from the partition opening.
