The tubular assembly B is similar to the tu-' bular assembly A, above described, and is provided with the plurality of rows of louvered perforations 2 together with the hooded portions 3 and the substantially straight cylindrical portion 5, of reduced diameter, and connected to the main wall portion of the tubular member or assembly B by the conic'ally shaped or frusto-conical portion 6. It is to'be noted that the tubular assembly B is mounted in axial alignment with the tubular assembly A and will be supported by the disc member I 8 in conjunction with the disc member 2! which is provided with the cylindrical flange 22 for fitting with and engaging the inner surface of the outer tube 4 and is adapted to be secured thereto by spot welding or similar means, the disc member 2 I being further provided with the flange 23 having the bore 23A therethrough for engaging the hooded portions 3 of one of the rows of louvered perforations 2 in a similar way to that in which the tubular assembly A is supported by the disc member l2, the bore 23A and the hooded portions 3 forming a plurality of openings IE .to permit the exhaust gases to flow slowly from the chamber 25 into the chamber 26, this construction being similar to that disclosed in the above mentioned pending application. The corrugated wall structure of the housing Si is extended at the front end of the housing 6| to form the wall portions 35 which extend substantially at right angles to the axis of the muiiler assembly, the wall portions 65 being ex-: tended to form and connect with the conical or frusto-conical shaped wall portion 66 which extends longitudinally through the housing 6|. and connects at its. rear or outlet end with the wall portion 31 which extends substantially at right angles to the axis of the combined muffler and heater assembly and connects with the opposite end of the corrugated structure 62. Thus the housing Si is provided with the cone shaped passage 36 extending longitudinally therethrough together with the chamber or passage 39 which extends circumferentially around the wall portions of the conical shaped passage 66, the chamber 38 being closed relative to the conical shaped passage 66. a
The housing 6| is further provided with a plurality of flns or webs 46 which are located to extend tangentially outward from the circle, in-
' dicated as being located adjacent and around the outlet opening of the cone shaped passage 66 and extending from the circle or diameter 4|,to points located substantially at the center of the rear end of the fluted portions or passages 34 of the corrugated structure 62 to guide or direct fluids or gases which flow adjacent the wall portion 21 to progress toward and into the tubular assembly B with a whirling or turbulent motion as more fully described hereinafter.
The housing ii is also provided with theboss portion 42 which is provided with the opening or passage 43 extending therethrough substantially at right angles .to'the axis of the combined muiller and heater assembly to connect the outside surface of the housing 6| and the chamber 69, the opening or passage 43 being threaded to engage the nipple or connection member 46 which is thus mounted in the boss portion 42 of the housing II and extends through suitable openings in the outer tubular member 4 and beyond the outer wall portions of the outer tube 4.
v The housing ii is also provided with the boss portion 44 which is provided with the opening or passage 46 extending therethrough substantially at right angles to the axis of the combined muflier and heater assembly to connect the outside surfaces of the housing 6! with the chamber .a suitable opening in the wall portion of the outer tube 4 and beyond the outside wall portion of the outer tube 4.

Fig. 8 discloses the inlet portion 6 of my combined mufller and heater assembly connected with the end of an exhaust pipe 24 which is adapted for connection with the exhaust manifold or mechanism of an internal combustion engine or similar unit, the end of the exhaust pipe 24 extending within the inlet portion 6, the inlet portion 8 being clamped or contacted by the clamp member 64 to flt snugly with the exhaust pipe 24, the clamp member 64 being provided with spaced lug or ear portions 64A which may be clamped by the bolt 543.
Also the nipple or connection 45 as disclosed in Fig. 7, is threadably connected with the twoway connection 65 which is provided with the extension portion 56 in .which is mounted the valve member 51 which is revolvably supported by the shaft 56 which is provided with the lever member 59 having a forked end for receiving the cable or rod member 60 therethrough, said cable or rod member 66 being adapted to extend to a convenient position adjacent the driver of a motor vehicle to permit the manual operation of the rod' 66, together with the valve mechanism, the cable 66 being enclosed in the conduit or tube 66A when the cable 66 is of the flexible type.
Also the two way connection 55 is provided with the extension portion 65 in which is mounted the valve member 62 which is rotatably supported by the shaft 66 to which is connected the lever 64 which is also provided with a forked end for connection with the rod or cable 60 which is provided with the collars or shouldered portions 668 for engaging the levers 56 and 64 to enable the cable or rod 66 to operate the levers 59 and 64.
The tube or pipe 66 which may be of either rigid or flexible construction, extends within the passage. of the two way connection 55 and also extends within the passage 66 of the ventilator or grill'housing 66 which is provided with a suitable flange portion Il to permit the grill housing 66 to be secured to the floor boards ll of the passengeror body compartment of an automotive vehicle, the flangeportion I6 being secured to the boards II by the screws 13, the grill housing 69 being partially closed at its upper end by the grid or register mechanism I4 which may be manually operated to an open or closed position to allow the heat developed in the combined muffler and heater assembly to pass or flow upwardly through the two way connection member 55, through the pipe or tube 66 and through the ventilator or grill housing 69 and out through the grid or register member 14.
When it is desired not to utilize the heat developed in the combined muffler and heater mechanism for heating the body or similar portion of the automotive vehicle, such as in the summer- .time and at other times, the valve 51 may be operated to a closed position and in a similar way, the valve 62 may be operated to'an open position to allow the heat to pass out into the two way connection member and out through the passage of the extension portion 65, past the valve 62 and out to the atmosphere, and in a similar way the valve 62 may be closed in cold weather and the valve 61 may be opened to provide for a flow and heater assembly into the desired compartment of an automotive vehicle or similar unit.
Fig. 7 discloses a diagrammatic or assembly view of the combined muiiier and heater assembly provided with .a scoop member 16 which is threadably supported on the nipple member 41 and is provided with a bell mouthed opening or inlet end 11 which is adapted to be located in a position where the bell mouthed end 11 will tend to scoop in cold air when the automotive vehicle is travelling so that the flow of air will pass through the bell mouth end 11 and through the scoop member 16, through thepassage of the nipple 41 into the chamber 39 to provide means for operating a flow of cold air throughthe heater element or housing 3I and after being heated to the desired compartment of an automotive vehicle or similar unit.
Also if it is desired to obtain a greater flow of cold air through the housing 3| than is possible I by means of the scoop member 19 or by a natural flow of cold air through the nipple 91, a means for propelling or drawing the air through the nipple 41 may be utilized,such as the fan member 18 which is electrically connected with and operated by the electrical motor 19, said fan member being installed between the combined muflier and heater assembly and the ventilator or grill housing 89 to provide a forced draft or drawing of the air through the housings}! and 99, disclosed in Fig. 7, or the ventilator or grill member 89 may be connected to the tube or conduit 96 I and mounted on a 'dash or similar member M of a vehicle, the housing 82 enclosing the fan member 18 and electrical motor 19, the housing 82 being provided with an opening 83 through which the heated air or fluid may pass into the desired compartment.
It is also to be noted that the housing 3| is provided with the oppositely disposed webs or ribs 94 connected between oppositely disposed sides of the conical portion 39 and the inside surfaces of the outer wall portions of the housing 3i, the rib or webs 89 extending for a portion only of the inside length of the housing 3i to form passages or openings 85 between the rear edge of the web or rib portions 98 and the wall portion 31, the location of the rib or web portions 84 also forming the passages or openings 86 between the forward edge of the webs or ribs 94 and the inside surface of the wall portion 35, the ribs 84 acting as bafiie means for causing the cooling fluid or air, passing into the chamber 39, to flow longitudinally of the ribs 84 and into the conical shaped wall structure 36.

inasmuch as it will tend to cool the fluids or gases flowing through the combined muifier and heater assembly from the exhaust pipes or conduits of an internal combustion engine or similar unit, and at the same time the mechanism comprising the housing 3I and its connected parts will tend to increase or heat up the cold air flowing through the nipple 41 into the chamber 39 of the housing 3| and thence through the nipple 45 into and through the ventilator or grill mechanism into the desired passenger or body compartment of the vehicle.- However, to simplify the specification, I refer tothe housing 3| and its connected parts as a heater element and it will be thus understood that it performs a cooling as well as a I of heat, fluid, or air from the combined muiller heating operation or function and also when used by itself as a muiiler function.
' In the combined muflier and heater assembly disclosed in Fig. 11, the tubular assemblies A and B are similar to those disclosed in Fig. 1, the tubular members of the tubular assembly A and the tube 30 each being disclosed with a relatively short slot IA at its inlet or outlet portion.
It is to be noted that the tubular assembly A in Fig. 11 is disclosed as being solely supported at its front portion by being suitably secured in the bores IIA'of the flanges II of the disc members 9A, it being understood that additional support means may be provided for the tubular assembly if desired. The disc members 9A are assembled adjacent one another to form the chamber or space 99 which contains the insulation or packing 9IA whichis constructed of asbestos, fibre or similar material having heat insulating characteristics.
It is to be noted that the inner tube or housing 9i is secured to the flanges I9 of the discs 9A and forms the shell of the mufller assembly, the inner tube or housing 9I being covered and surrounded by the layer or envelope of insulation .or packing or similar material 92, the insulation or packing 92 being covered and surrounded by the outer cover envelope, or tubular member 93.
The combined mufller and heater assembly of Fig. 11 is provided with the disc members IBA, 2IA and 213 similar to the disc members I8, 2| and 21 of Fig. 1, the disc members I8A, MA and 213 being provided with flanges 29B, 23B, and
293 respectively having bores 20A, 23A and 29A for engaging and supporting the tubular assembly B, the disc members 213, however, being utilized in pairs to provide the chamber or space 99 for containing the insulation or packing 95.-
The housing 96 in Fig. 11 is similar to the housing 35 of Fig. 1 and fits within the inner tube or housing 9I and has its corrugated wall structure extended to form the wall portions 91 I which connect with the wall portions which form the cylindrical portion 98 which connects with It is also to be noted that whereas I refer to the f ber which is p v d with boss portions I05 which may be secured therein asby threading,

The washer .or bushing members H0 are provided with flanges III which are shaped to conform with the outside diameter or shape of the outer cover or tubular member 93 and are provided with openings or passages through which extend the bushings I 96 and I91 which are adapted to holdthe washer or bushing members H0 in position to prevent leakage around the bushing members I09 and I 91 and to locate the housing 96 and its connected parts in'the muffler assembly. I
The bushing members I 09' and I01 thus extend through suitable openings in' the inner tube 9i, the insulation or packing 92 and the outer cover or housing member 93, and by their connection with the boss portions I95 of the housing 96 clamp the bushing-members H9 in place and by threadable or similar connecting means respectively support the two way connection members I I2A and I I2 which are respectively provided with extension portions H3 and H4 which extend within and respectively engage the bushing members I99-and I91.
The two way connection member I HA is similarto the member 66 of Fig. 7 and is provided with extension portions 66 and 65 in which are mounted valve members 91 and 62, the two way connection member II2A being provided with the rivets or similar members II! which are adapted to form stops for tubular members when -mounted in and connected with the extension portions II9 which are pivotally connected by the cable or rod member II9, the lever member II6 being further pivotally connected with the cable or rod member I29 which is adapted to extend to a convenient position adjacent the driver of the motor vehicle to facilitate manual operation thereof.

The valve member I24 is rotatably supported on the shaft I25 and is adapted to engage the seat surface I26 to close the passage I21 and prevent cold airfrom passing thereinto from the passage I29 when the valve member I24 is in its closed position, as disclosed by full lines, the shaft I26 beingprovided with the lever member I29 which is connected with the cable or rod member I99 which is adapted to extend to a convenient position adjacent the driver of the motor vehicle to facilitate manual operation thereof. When the valve' member I24 is in its open position, as disclosed by the dotted lines I3I,-Flg. 11, cold air is allowed to pass into the passage I21 and through the combined heater and muiller assembly, the cold air then being prevented from passing into the flexible tube I32 .which may be positioned to guide the cold air where desired when the cold air is guided thereinto by movement of the valve member I24 away from the position indicated by the dotted lines "I. It is to be noted that the two way connection member II2A and its valve mechanism can be used without the two way connection member II! in place of which a scoop or similar cold air inlet member I9 may be used in place thereof.
Also it is to be noted that with the use of the two connection member II2A the heated air may be discharged into the open or outside atmosphere or the heated air may all or partially be passed into the automotive vehicle, thus cooling the combined heater andmuflier all the year around.
Also the two way connection member H2 and its valve mechanism maybe used without the two way connection member II 2A and with its valve member I24 open or partially open will guide and force all or part of the cold air into and through the combined heater andmuffler assembly as desired.
The housing 96 is provided with the oppositely disposed webs or ribs I33 connected between oppositely disposed sides of the cylindrical portion 99 and the conical or frusto-conical portions 99 and the inside wall surfaces of the outer wall portions of the housing 3|, the webs or ribs I33 extending for a portion only of the inside length of the housing 96 to form the passages or openings I34 between the front edges of the webs or ribs I33 and the wall portions 91, the webs or ribs I33 acting as baille means for causing the cooling fluid or air, passing into the chamber I94, to flow longitudinally of the webs or ribs I33 and the conical or frusto-conical portion 99 'and the cylindrical portion 99', thus causing the cold air to passover the relatively hottest portions of the housing 96.
It is to be also noted that the housings or members SI and 96 hereinafter more fully described, may be used without tubular assemblies such as A or B and when incorporated in tubular housings may be installed as heater units in association with muiller conduits and assemblies of conventional design to permit m'y heater means by itself to be thus installed as accessory means with muilier units of automotive vehicles.
In operation the fluids or gases are expelled from the internal combustion engine or similar unit through the exhaust pipes or conduit 69 and thus into the tubular assembly A and a portion of the fluids or gases will pass directly through the outlet opening in the straight cylindrical portion 9 and into the cone or conical passage 39 and will also further pass directly therethrough into the relatively narrow chamber 91 between the rear end of the housing 3| and the disc member I9 and thus into the tubular assembly B and then through the outlet opening in the straight cylindrical portion 5 of the tubular assembly B directly into. and through the outlet pipe or tube 39 and thus to the outside atmosphere.
At the same time a portion of the fluids or gases entering the tubular assembly A will be impeded by the smaller diameter of the outlet opening in the straight cylindrical portion 6 of the tubular assembly A and forced to escape through the,
rows of louvered perforations 2 and past the hood portions 3 of,the tubular assembly A into the chamber I6 from where they will slowly pass through the openings I9 between the inner surface of the flange I4 of the disc member I2 and the hood portions 3 of the tubular assembly A, said fluids or gases thus flowing slowly from the chamber I6 into the chamber I1 and as the fluids or gases issue or escape through the louvered perforations 2 in the chamber I6, they will be caused to whirl, rotate, or tangentially flow adjacent the outside surfaces of the tubular assembly A and adjacent the inside surfaces of the outer tube .4 and this same whirling or turbulent flow will take place in the chamber H as the gases or fluids escape-from the tubular assembly A through the louvered perforations 2 ofthe tubular assembly A located within and connecting with the chamber I I. A portion of the whirling fluids or gases in the chamber II will be collected and drawn into and through the conical e 39 by the high velocity of the fluids and gases passing directly through the nozzle orv outlet opening in the substantially straight cylindrical portion 5 .of the Also a portion of the gases or fluids in the chamber U will flow along the outside surfaces of the housing 3| through the openings 34. formed between the corrugated structure 32 and the inside surface of the outer tube 4 and into the chamber 81 and these fluids or gases will be continually drawn into and through the chamber 81 and into the tubular assembly B by the high velocity of the fluids or gases passing through the conical passage 38 and into the tubular assembly B, the fluids orgases which are drawn through the openings 34 and to the chamber 8'? passing across and adjacent the end surface of the wall portion 31 between the fins or ribs 40, thus being caused to flow with a whirling or turbulent motion due to the location and position of the fins or ribs 40, the fluids or gases thus passing around and through the housing 3i in concentric paths.
A portion of the fluids or gases which enter the tubular assembly B will flow directly through the,
outlet opening in the straight cylindrical portion '5 forming the nozzle of the tubular assembly B into and through the exhaust pipe or tube 30 into the atmosphere and a portion of said fluids or gases entering the tubular assembly B will escape through the louvered perforations 2 thereof into the chamber 25 and will pass through the openings I 5 between the inner surface of the flange 23 and the hood portions 3 (if the louvered perforations 2 of the tubular assembly B into the chamber 26 where they will meet and be turbulently mixed with that portion of the fluids or gases which enter the tubular assembly B and escape through the louvered perforations 2 into the chamber 26 in a similar manner to the flow of the fluids or gases through the tubular assembly A.
The operation of the combined muffier and heater assembly disclosed in Figs. 11 to 19 inclu'sive is similar in operation to that described above and is further provided with insulating material around its cylindrical or outer surface as well as its ends to insure that the heat from the combined heater and munler assembly will not be radiated therefrom to cause unwanted heating of the body and occupants oi the automotive vehicle inwarm weather-and also insure that the heat will be retained therein in cold weather to prevent dissipation of the heat and eflicient utilization of same for heating the body and occupants of the automotive vehicle,
The disc members I 2 and 2| are adapted to be P sitioned during assembly and before permanent attachment to provide any desired number of rows of louvered perforations 2 for direct connection respectively with the chambers I B and I1 and 25 and 28, this feature ofmy invention beingsimilar to that disclosed in the above mentioned pending application.

In a combined muiiler and heater for use with the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine, the combination of-muiiler meansprovided with an inlet opening for connecting with said exhaust conduit, said muflier means being provided ,with' an outlet opening, and a housing member operatively mounted between said inlet and outlet openings of said 'muiiler means and provided with a cone shaped passage to permit exhaust fluids from said exhaust conduit to pass through said cone shaped passage to said outlet opening 01' said mufller means, said housing member being provided with a chamber surrounding the walls of said cone shaped passage and adapted to receive a cooling fluid therethrough, the delivery end of said passage being substantially spaced from the outlet of said muifier means. In a combined muiiler and heater for use with the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine, the combination of muflier means provided with an inlet opening for connecting with said exhaust conduit, said muiiler means being provided with an inlet and an outlet opening, and a housing member operatively mounted between said inlet and outlet openings of said muiller means and provided with a cone shaped passage to permit exhaust fluids from said exhaust conduit to pass through said cone shaped passage to said outlet opening of said muflier means; said housing member being provided with a chamber surrounding the walls of said cone shaped passage and adapted to receive a cooling fluid therethrough, said housing member being further provided with flns arranged longitudinally on its end wallportions relatige to the outlet opening of said cone. shaped passage, to cause said exhaust fluids flowing around said housing member to flow toward the! central portion of said muiiier means, on the way to said outlet opening of said mufller means with a whirling motion.
3. In a combined muifler and heater, the combination of muffler means for receiving exhaust permit said exhaust fluids to flow therethrough when flowing through said muiiler means, said housing member being provided with a chamber surrounding said cone shaped passage for receiving a cooling fluid therethrough, said housing member being provided with a corrugated wall structure for extending within and engaging the inner surface of said tubular housing,
said corrugated wall structure forming, with the walls of said tubular housing, passages extending longitudinally adjacent said housing member to allow a portion 01' said exhaust fluids received into said muflier means to flow around said housing member, said housing member being further provided with fins arranged tangentially around the outlet opening of said cone shaped passage to cause said exhaust fluids flowing around said housing member to flow toward the central portion of said mufiier means with a whirling motion.
4. In a combined muiiier and heater for connection with the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine and with a compartment to be heated, the combination of a tubular member provided with an outlet, together with a compartment between its ends, said compartment being provided with an outlet, a second tubular member mounted within said flrst mentioned tubular member and providing an inlet therefor to receivefiuids flowing from said exhaust conduit, said second tubular member having a partially closed end extending within said compartment of said first mentioned tubular member, said second tubular member being provided with one or more rows of louvered perforations tocause exhaust fluids flowing from said exhaust conduit into said second tubular member to flow tangentially through said louvered perforations into and around said compartment, a housing areas -supported and extending within said cylindrical.
member mounted in said compartment of said first mentioned tubular member and providing a chamber at the front and rear ends of said housing member within said compartment, said housing member being provided v with a cone shaped passage for receiving therethrough fluids flowing out of said partially closed end of said second tubular member, said housing member being provided with corrugated wall portions for forming, together with the outer wall portions of said first mentioned tubular member, passages for the flow of exhaust fluids from said chamber, withinsaid compartment and at the front end of said housing member, to said chamber within said compartment and at the rear end of said housing member, said housing member being further provided with fins on its rear wall portion and arranged tangentially around the 1 opening of said cone shaped passage to cause exhaust fluids entering into said chamber, at the rear end of said housing, from said passages, formed by said corrugated wall portions of said housing member together with the outer wall portions of said first mentioned tubular member, to flow with awhirling motion toward and into said outlet of said compartment of said first.
mentioned tubular member, a third tubular member connected with said outlet of said compartment of said first mentioned tubular member and provided with apartially closed end adapted to guide fluids flowing therethrough into said flrst mentioned outlet of said first mentioned tubular member, said third tubular member being pro- 'vided with one or more rows of louvered perforations to cause exhaust fluids flowing into said third tubular member to flow tangentially through said louvered perforations and around said third tubular member to join with the exhaust fluids flowing into and through said outlet of said first mentioned tubular member, and means for guiding said cooling fluid, after it has been heated, into said compartment of the vehicle.

In a combined mufiler and heater, the combination of a housing means, a heater member mounted in said housing means and provided with a. passage therethrough, said e having a cylindrical portion connected to a relatively smaller outlet portion by a conical portion, said heater member being provided with a chamber around said cylindrical and said conical portions and adapted to receive-a cooling fluid therethrough, said heater housing being provided with a corrugated structure forming, with said housing means, passages connected with said cylindrical portion of said e through said heater member and with said outlet portion, means for guiding a flow of cool air into said chamber of said heater member, a second means for guiding a flow of heated air from said chamber of said heater member, and a muilier means suitablyportion of said passage through said heater member, said muilier means being provided with inlet and outlet openings, said muffler means being provided with apertures arranged circumferentially therearound for discharging exhaust gases against said cylindrical portion of said e extending through said heater member.
6. In a muiiier, a 'compartmented housing,
inlet conduit projecting -substantially into said housing, said conduit having vents thru the walls' thereof, a chamber into which a portion of the gasu flowing through said conduit are released, a converging e at the end of said conduit with the large end thereof being of substantially greater diameterthan the end of said conduit, the end of said conduit being of restricted shape whereby the gases passing therethrough are given high velocity thereby inducing increased flow of the gases from said chamber, a plurality of individual gas passes in said housing exteriorly of said passage leading from said chamber, a second expansion chamber at the small end of said passage, an outlet conduit from said ho'using, and a second conduit coaxial with said passage residing within said second chamber and having vents through the walls thereof open to said second chamber, the delivery end of said second conduit being spaced from said outlet conduit and of restricted diameter thereby in-- ducing a flow of gases from said second chamber.
7. In a muffler, a compartmented housing, an inlet conduit projecting substantially into said housing, said conduit having hooded vents therethrough, a chamber around said conduit into which a portion of said gases flow, said hooded vents lending a circular motion about said conduit to said gases, a converging passage at the end of said conduit with the large end thereof being of substantially greater diameter thanthe end of said conduit, the end of said conduit being of restricted shape whereby the gases passing therethrough are given high velocity thereby inducing increased flow of the gases from said chamber, a plurality of individual gas passes in said housing exteriorly of said passage leading from said chamber, a second expansion chamber at the small end of said passage, an outlet confrom said outlet conduit and of restricted diam- 'eter thereby inducing a flow of gases from said second chamber directly through said outlet conduit.
